I have a new Sendero Fluted barrel for a 700 in 300 win mag. The action is SS that I have Dura-Coated. Scope is a 4.3x14 LR with an M1 on top. Berger 210's will have a go as well as Sierra offerings. I need a stock...which one..hmm? The rifle will be use for long range steel clanging and rock busting. Yeah, I take great pleasure in smacking things at distance. The rifle may just double for a long hunter as well out to a 1000. I'm thinking of possibly going with a LSS stock, will it handle the Sendero barrel? The A3 looks possible. I don't want a pure prone stock or at least I don't think I do. Thoughts?

Just my thoughts.... For what you are doing, I don't think I'd trust a Remmy laminated stock.... just me I guess. I'm about certain it would take the barrel though.
As to otehrs... 1500 yards takes everything just right.... The action is common etc... Now would be a good time to pick up a McMillan for it.
I'm with you though, I don't care for prone only. The A3 is a good compromise, BUT it has to make you happy. What floats for some sinks for others.
The other thought, an HS, the bedding block will have to be bedded as they are never true, and the recoil seems a bit stouter with them.
All the MC I have are target stocks so my comparisons kinda suck. I will have to make some hunting decisions in the future though.. So I feel for ya.
Wonder if Rem LSS is made by Boyds or whom?

Or, if you want a laminated but in a McM type config get a hold of Joel Russo. His stocks are excellent. Joel's email - jkrussos comcast.net

A2 or A3 would be my choice, but it's a very subjective thing.
I use A2 and A5. Prefer the A2. I use a bipod up front and beanbag rear support. I don't love the butthook on the A5 in conjunction with a beanbag. The smooth/sloped A2 style works wonderfully with a beanbag.

MM, Thanks, have to admit you kinda passed the long distance bug on to me with the shooting you've been demonstrating with your own rifles. Ever handle the M40 HGT while you were in the Corp? http://www.tacticalrifles.net/tactical_m40.asp

Bob,
If you are going to have to have the barrel installed, then consider canning the Sendero barrel and get a custom one. Probably a 28" in an LV taper. Benchmark barreling is in Arlington, WA and has short turn times. They made and installed my record-setting, match winning, 1000 yd screamer barrel.
I'd go with a 1x11 twist. 300 Winny is fine, and I'd try bullets from the 220 SMK to the 187 Bib. You want to find the best combination of velocity and BC, and it will happen somewhere in those range of bullet weights. You must keep the bullet supersonic at whatever range you want to hit something at, and I know that a 220 SMK at 2700 fps is good to over 1000 yds, but I am unsure about 1500. You may need a larger case to keep you supersonic out there.
Oh yeah, whatever stock you get make sure it is beefy.

No I never handled a bonafide M40. I was a Fire Support Man (enlisted forward observer). Had a few snipers working close by on a few occasions, and spoke rifles with them. I never asked to handle their rifles. If I were a a sniper I wouldn't let anyone fingerphuck my rifle, so I didn't even ask. I do have my 308 in an HTG stock at the moment though, with the A5 sitting empty. The M40-style rifle makes a good all-arounder. Easy to carry and quick to shoulder. For a deliberate LR setup, I just prefer the higher comb, and near vertical grip of the A2/3/4/5 stocks. This is how I have my two boltguns set up, 30-06 in A2 with MK4 16x40, 308 in HTG with MK4 3.5-10x40. Put a stock-pack on the HTG to add a little height to the comb.

Blaine is steering you with good info. Any Mickey you pick would be great, but the majority of F Class guys I have been around are shooting laminated wood. The trend comes and goes to wood then glass. One is too stiff then the other is too soft.... good vibes vs bad vibes. Barrel, smith, and the load make the gun. The smith will take care of the correct bedding in whatever approiate stock you find.
What does it mean when the primers fall out of the case?

Richard Custom Rifles recently sold all of his stock making to Greg West. My heart is set on a Model 10 Varminter in African Obeche. If you want to stay with wood it would be my choice. If you want something you can bang around I would stick with the A-2, I would also second MM comment that the A-5 design is a pain with a rear bag, you really need on of the monopods off of the rear slings stud. http://www.westcustomrifles.com/
