I have been shooting one of the Ruger Hawkeye sporters for a month or more now. The first 5-shot group with 140 A-Max factories at at 100 yards went into .6. The 120 V-Max load didn't shoot quite as well, around .75. Velocities were just about as advertised.

After that I loaded up a bunch of different bullets, with various powders that looked like they might work. All shot well, from the 100 Tipped TSX to the 140 VLD, but the star so far is the 120-grain Nosler Ballistic Tip and 47 grains of Ramshot Hunter, half a grain under the max load listed for that bullet in Ramshot's data. In the 26" barrel of the Hawkeye it chronographs just a hair under 3100 and shoots extremely well. Used the load this week on a pronghorn and of course it worked great.

Case capacity (H20) is about half a grain less than the .260, when seating the 120 BT to standard OAL (Federal brass in the .260). So far the cases seem to stretch less than in the .260, but the most I've fired any cases is 3 times.

Should work great in an AR.

I'd certainly consider it! (And I already have a .257 Roberts, .25-06, 6.5x55, 6.5x57R and 6.5-06...)

So is the magic in the 26" tube?

Also curious why the RS load guide shows about 2grs more for the creed than 260 for similar weight bullets... is the max pressure same/same?

The 26" barrel would certainly help. The muzzle velocity in my rifle is around 100 fps higher than Ramshot lists with a 24" barrel, and 50 fps per inch of barrel length is pretty common with slower-burning powders and bullets of higher sectional densities.

Also, I checked the Ramshot data and they do load the Creedmoor a little hotter. Max pressures listed by Ramshot in the Creedmoor are in the 59,000+ range, and somewhat lower in the .260.

I would suspect this is because the Creedmoor case, like a lot of the shorter (and sometimes fatter) cases with sharper shoulders, produces more consistent pressures than longer cases. Thus the AVERAGE pressure can be a little higher in the Creedmoor, without individual shots ranging higher than acceptable.

This is the same reason some conventional cartridges have a lower SAAMI maximum AVERAGE pressure rating than shorter, fatter rounds with steeper shoulder angles. There's both a maximum acceptable average pressure, and a maximum acceptable pressure for individual shots.

A video was posted on another thread about two-three weeks ago. Do a search. Posted by JBurns if I remember.

Wayne van Zwoll used a 129 gr Horn SST fired from a 6.5 Creedmoor to take a bull elk from 603 yards.

That`s not too shabby imo.

I did look at the pressures listed by RS and wondered. Your explanation makes sense... Best I can find max is 58k for both, and thought maybe the RS Creed data was a little more aggressive or different "vintage", likely being significantly newer than the 260 data.

Wish Ruger would offer up some love for the Creed in stainless sporter weights like the RL. Don't think I'd trade our stainless 16.5" or 22" 260s for a blued 26" Creed anytime soon.

You mentioned earlier that there were viable reasons for the Creed other than the base of the bullet above the neck. Mind elaborating?

It's designed to work in an AR--and sell rifles.

"6.5 creedmoor? Tell me about your experiences"

I compete in a monthly sniper shoot with shots out to 1000 yds. Most months their are some shooters who bring a 6.5 CM. I shoot my 6.5x47 Lapua.

I always beat them! grin

Is the 260 data and the creedmoor data interchangeable?

Not exactly, the Creed has a TAD less capacity, the load info is printed ON the Hornady ammo box IIRC.

Yes, Hornady prints the load used on their ammo boxes. They're using Varget and H4350 these days.

Ramshot has a bunch of Creedmore data on their website as well. I found Hunter to work very well.
