Picked up this m70XTR in 243 this weekend. I believe it has a #6 contour. An the trigger is great. What stock should I get for this? It will be used as a walking varminter. Any other thoughts on tweaking this rifle?

I'd get some Talleys and mount a Leupold 4.5-14x40 on it first. Then I would stick it in a McMillan Varminter or an HTG... All my heavy barrelled Winchesters wear A5s, but I am partial to the low and wide fore end and vertical pistol grip of the A-5.

Why not leave it as is? If it shoots well it is a heck of a walking varminter; if you want to restock check out the internet specials on McMillan's website. The nice thing about McMillan's is that while they are pricey, they hold their value and you can resell for often close to what you paid.
Jstor: Do you have any pictures of your M70's in A5s? I'd love to see'em.

I'll see what I can do with some photos. I'll probably start a new thread.

Take advantage of Ricks Christmas Special. Make a downpayment now and pay every month for 5 months it takes to build the stock. Then pay it off when its done.

That's what I did with my last McMillan, gonna do it again here later today with another two. Spread out over five months (mine came in 5 months and three days from date of order) the cost isn't so bad.

the stock will be the last thing on the list of prioritys. The nikon Thats on it now is a loaner scope so thats where My main focus is now.
I asked in the optics forum too but what are your thoughts on these 2 scopes? any preferences?
First scope is the loopie VX-3 long range. 4.5-14x40 with the side focus
The other is the Zeiss conquest 4.5-14x44 with the side focus.

Leupold. If it breaks you can drive it up to Beaverton for service; if you don't like it, you can sell it for near what you paid for it. I'm sure the Zeiss is good glass, but unless you can get it for a better price I see no reason to not buy the Leupold.
Also, for varmints check out the Bushnell Elite 3200 10x Mil-Dot scope, I bought one used and am very impressed with it. The scope is clear, sharp and contrasty. They run $180 and come with target turrets.
