Well... subject says it all.
My thought is that a Sako 85 is a great hunting rifle action that is pretty much top of the line for it's purpose. Especially given the 70 degree bolt lift, smooth action, and magazine.
True or do the others have the same features and are better? Spot

Perhaps the Sako's are fine but not to me. Here are the reasons that I favor many other actions over Sakos and in particular the new ones.
1. Not control round feed. 2. No three position safety that locks the firing pin. 3. Not made in the USA. 4. Recent blowups that are still happening. 5. Unattractive stocks. 6. High prices.
I much prefer M70s, Kimbers, and some Mausers. This leaves a large supply of rifles for me. I do have one Sako action that I got before I had the above knowledge.

AKA so what would be a really really good action for hunting rifle builds?
Next build would be a 35 Whelen or 9.3x62 - pref. wise I'd like to buy the rifle as is, then get a Mcmillan stock, and last change out the barrel to a Krieger or equivalent after using up the one on the rifle.
Of course I could have this out of order, or just FBAR.. so help me out.

Since you like McMillian stocks just buy a light one and put it on a pre 64 M70 and your done.

Is there really that much difference between the pre-64's and the new ones?
Or a good 700 like the CDL?
I would think the Sako ranked pretty high...
I mention the CDL because it comes in 35 Whelen today.

It may be better for me to pick up a used sako and have it rebarreled and then get a Mc stock put on it.
of course that isn't cheap but I want a rifle that I can just swap out barrels as time goes by.
Also I'd like the action trued of course.
BTW - that is a pretty rifle!

My custom varmint guns are both on Sako's. My custom big game rifles are on Win model 70, mauser or CZ. As stated by Savage99, CRF, Fixed ejector, Blade extractor all are important features. The 90 degree bolt lift actually gives you a mechanical ADVANTAGE when extracting a spent case.

I have a custom being built as we speak on a Sako 75 V action - I have no worries using the Sako 75 action for the build!!

first custom I had put together was a 7-08AI on a Sako L579 action in a McMillan....
later I rebarreled another one to 22-250 ...
IMHO...you can do a WHOLE lot worse than a two lug Sako for a custom build....

Is there a better action for a custom hunting rifle than a sako?
Yes. A Model 70.

Mauser 98's - especially the current, commercial versions from firms like Recknagel, Prechtl, Dumoulin, etc.
