Gents,
I have a Bartlein 30 cal barrel sitting in my gunsafe that was previously chambered for 30-06. It was chambered with full shank (1.875 inches), and finished at 24 inches. At the muzzle it's 0.700 inches. Long story short, it got switched to a Rock #3 because it wasn't what I wanted for my hunting rifle.
It seems a shame to throw it away. I don't have many centerfire rifles--one operational 30-06 right now, and a Win PF Model 70 that will become a 25-06 if/when Rock finishes a #2 25 cal barrel. I only bring it up because I wouldn't normally default to "build another rifle".
But again, it seems a shame to throw it away.
Also, I'm moving this summer to Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, AL. Mickey Coleman happens to be 45 minutes away from there, so theoretically I could have him put the pieces together if I built something else.
I think my options are:
1. Sell it, for maybe $175 or so, shipping included. Half price, no wait, and someone that wanted to make a 23 inch or shorter 308 Win, 30-06, 300 Win Mag, 300 WSM, etc. could use it.
2. Make a 308 Win out of it. I have not shot a 308 Win, but I know it's an accurate platform. It could probably get to ~8 lbs with a scope.
3. Make another 30-06 out of it. I already have a nice reamer for 30-06, I neck turn for my -06, I have all the powders, bullets, brass, etc. Hell, I have 30-06 Redding Type S dies, Lee dies, Redding Competition seater, Wilson seater, etc. A result of only shooting and loading for a 30-06 for 10 years is you end up with a bunch of 30-06 stuff. But in the end, I don't know what I would do with a second 30-06.
4. Maybe Bartlein would recontour it to a #2, or a Rem sporter contour?
I think I'm leaning towards selling it. Opinions?
Oh, and I like my red shoes with this dress I have on.
