Greetings all. I played hurricane Matthew for the last 2 weeks, one week here in our Emergency Operations Center and then we deployed up near Jacksonville to help out another county for a week. I am finally getting some time to start looking at a few of my new rifles.

Looking for info on this 1899 1/2 octagon in 30-30. Serial number is 76.420 with a 26" barrel. It's pretty heavy...I would not want to carry it out in the woods all day!

Is the long base #30 1/2 rear sight I put on it correct for the time period? I have not taken the original completely off yet.

Ballpark of what this one is worth?

Thanks!
Paul

I gotta agree with John on this. I would take that to get it out of my grubby hands.

Nice honest gun. Like a "woman of a certain age" who still carries most of her youthful beauty.

Although the Lyman 30 1/2 sight debuted a while after it was built, it wasn't a really long while and to me looks A-ok on it. Plab's right re: it looks too high though. You may need to sniff out a shorter sight barrel or think about a taller front sight.

Nothing wrong with the original sights. The # 30 1/2 adds some "bling" and at least $250 based on what I have sold several of them for. If the sight was not released until after the rifle was made I'll take it off.

Barrel is 26" if I measured from the right spot.

you won't get anything for the sight if it's on there. Sell it to one of these 2-250 guys.

I've sold a couple already. The rest are going to stay in the safe for a while. They are worth more to me than the cash at this point.

I can't see enough for a tang sight anymore. If I could trade one for a good Leupold, I probably would.
