1901 1899B .303 Picked it up today from my FFL. Nicer than I thought it would be. Wrong front sight, but all numbers match.

Per Rick, the correct front sight would be a Model 1895 sight.

Congrats Keith on the rifle find.
I just inherited a Savage 1899 in 303 sav. with octagon barrel from my wife's grandfather. It has a serial # 32,XXX. I have not got it from my father in laws house yet. I cant wait to check out the serial numbers to see if they all match. I will post pictures when I get it home.

Savage offered quite a few optional sights at that time. It may have one of those. A closeup pic of the sight would be helpful in identifying it. David

That looks like the sights used in the 30's to 60's rifles.

Yup, have to agree with that call.

Won't be cheap or easy to find the right one but I think the gun deserves it.

yup ... I was pretty sure it was not right.

so ... let the hunt begin.

1) Does anyone know the what the height would be (base to tallest front) on a correct sight? Then I can at least weed out the incorrect ones on ebay.

2) was the correct sight blade pinned and can you see the pin from the bottom of the base?

UPDATE: I found a pic of an octagon with the sight and did some measurements ... looks like the tall part of the blade height is about 0.400" tall.

It would probably be smart to match the height of the sight that's on there now.

You will find the Rocky Mountain front sight plain as above and some with a bead formed on them. I think both were used.

The one in Keith's photo was used on the 1895 and early 1899 till the 22B (with the bead)version was used by Savage about 1905.

Still have not found "the" correct sight for the 1901 1899B. I'm going to expand my possible correct sights based on this page from the 1900 catalog.

I've seen the Lyman No. 2 on several 1899 Bs. Including my Granddad's gun, a 1901 as well.

Sent you a PM too.

I had that front sight on a 303 SR I had once. It came and went though. I had it lettered, but can't remember the year it was born

The Sheards (not Marbles marked) were commonly used.
