I'm going to put a low power variable, probably a 1-4 with illuminated reticle on my AR. Open to suggestions on that. Will be used for coyotes, deer and house cleaning.
I see that the most prevalent mounts are a cantilever style. I would much prefer, if I can get proper eye relief, to mount directly to the picatinny on the upper. Is that even possible?
Thanks,
John

No, hence the cantilever mounts.

On most scopes, the turrets are too far forward to get a ring on the scope and still mount it to the reciever, without moving the scope too far to the rear. You can use a long riser from PRI and eliminate this problem if you have a forearm with a top rail and just use standard scope rings.

LaRue or AD Recon are the two I've used and really like.

I have a Leupold Mark AR 3x-9x mounted directly to the Picatinny on one of my AR's using Leupold Mark 4 rings and have no issues with eye relief. My rifle has an A2 buttstock. Works for me...

anyone use the P.E.P.R. scope mounts from Burris? A friend has one, seems okay, but it is a tad too high for me.

I would get an aimpoint and a regular hunting scope. a jack of all trades is a master of none. The Lt-104 returns pretty close to zero for about $200 then buy your self a Leupold for $400 etc. You can take it off and replace with an Aimpoint in QD during the off season. OR if possible.. What about a Aimpoint T-1 in an LT724 angled mount for $650 and keep it on gun? Somehow I would get two optics red dot and traditional scope over the single 1-4. I have one. http://www.laruetactical.com/aimpoint-micro-t-1-lt-724-angled-qd-mount-combo

a set of those old see thru mounts that fit a rail work very well on a ar15. they are about the perfect height.

CAA makes a mount for about $25,i have a couple of them and they work fine and return "close enough" to zero when removed and remounted. There 30mm with 1" inserts also.

Leupold's mount is okay for a non-quick mount. It is fairly attractive, too, with some nice contours.

Thinking of going with this combination. Anybody have any experience with it? Actually, I was thinking of this one. John

My thoughts are; "That's a lot of money for a little magnification."
Myself, I would either go a full-size scope with offset Docter-style optic, or a T1-style optic on its own.

I have the next scope up, the 1-4x XTR. I paid $550 for it at Midway a couple of months ago. Great glass. Appears to be about a 1.1 magnification at its lowest setting so it is FAST up close. I like the horsehoe XTR reticle, can't comment on the MTAC's. The illumination on mine isn't daylight visible in full sun, but I don't see that as an issue, mine is an older version, marketed in Europe, IIRC. On the Burris scopes you twist the entire turret to change magnification, some don't like that but it eliminates the need for a cattail for a comp rifle.
I'm looking really hard at the 1.5x6 XTR for a woods hunting rifle.

I took my just acquired PSA out today for the first time. I used the Burris QD mount with a Leupold 1.25-4X (German #4) and was stunned, frankly, at how well the relatively inexpensive mount returned to zero.
Conduct is the best proof of character.

anyone use the P.E.P.R. scope mounts from Burris? Yeah. I like it. That said, I have a "real" scope on the AR.
