Anyone want any burnt guns from a house fire?

My safe did not save them, as the house was burnt to the ground

the guns are burnt bad some have no stock on them some have curved barrels all the scopes are melted, and this was a heavy duty browning safe.

About 75 guns where destroyed

Oh my. They got HOT then. I have seen many come through a fire with just "dark" wood from heavy smoke. I have never seen one inside a safe that got that hot.

Are you willing to share what brand the safe was? I'm just questioning my choice.

Brand doesn’t matter. The fire rating on safes is done with a nice steady time temperature curve, that isn’t a house fire at all. Their whole fire rating thing a sales scam. If there is a fire in the other room and they put it out u maybe ok. If in the room with the safe doubtful.

A typical hose fire gets a fast temp spike when all the combustibles go up at once, typically when structure gives way.

Have a degree in Fire Protection Engineering, remember that from a class even though it was many moons ago.

Man I always hate to hear this. I am truly sorry for your loss.

We had a big fire come through our area a couple years back, and I learned that there is not a single regular fire safe on the market that will save guns in a fully involved house fire. Those get so incredibly hot that safes just don’t have a chance. Your best bet is scheduled insurance, unfortunately.

That's terrible elkhunter1945. I hope all everyone is safe. Material things can be replaced. We had a house fire when I was 8 on a Saturday. Dad was working and Mom was grocery shopping. All us kids ran over to the neighbors. Still remember many details of that day. Anything you need?? I'm down state

Might be down the road a bit but if u had any Leupold scopes you may call them. I can't remember exactly but years ago I think they replaced a badly damaged one from my buddy's truck fire. Nevertheless they may give u partial credit if anything

Sorry you lost your home. I’ve never heard of guns in a safe fairing well in a fire; the story has been repeated here several times.

We recovered a safe from a friends house that burned down , and it was full of water and ash from the fire. I was able to salvage a couple of them , but most were damaged
beyond repair and lost heat treatment.

Truly sorry for your loss. I’ve been close to a couple families that lost their homes to fire. It’s a terrible experience but does get better with time. Hopefully all people and animals involved are safe. The families I know who dealt with your current misfortune all seem to have created a stronger bond because of the tragedy they shared.

To all those who are interested in the burnt guns I will be more than happy to get rid of them, but will not ship , local pickup only.

We have no pets and my wife and I both got out okay but only had the clothes on our backs.

Fire was started by charging a lithen battery.

I also had some canada 1 oz silver coins in the safe some of them got tarnished and bent, but did not melt

ElkHunter, I realize you have more pressing priorities at the moment, but if you need a loaner rifle to get you through this year's hunting season there are a lot of good guys on this site willing to help, including myself.

Sorry to hear of the devastation, you and your wife are alive, to that ...give God the glory. I experienced this in 1976 while at work, did not lose guns but lost all possessions.
The safes present a false sense of security, I also lived tthrough Hurricane Katrina and safes to not protect against flooding. There were millions of guns lost during this event. Some might could have been saved if we had been allowed back to our homes in short order. For me it was 17 days I was away, and the water came within a city block of my house. Again protected by God. My thoughts and prayers go out to you. When we are sent through the fire, we may not always believe, but God goes through with us. My condolences.

I'm sorry to hear that. My house burned down in 1991. My family lost about 98% of our stuff. We all got out unhurt. Since then all the stuff has been replaced, including all of my sporting tools and toys. It'll be hard for you for a while but as time passes things should get better.

So no one has a sprinkler system in their house, and rely on gun safe for protection

We lost our home 6 years ago to the date to a fire. My safe was a 1500 degree for 75 minutes. The seal broke and smoke entered ruined scopes but no guns. Had some rust, but salvaged all guns. Need any advice feel free to pm

Spence is correct, I know a couple of locals whose house burnt and they lost all of their guns==> in safes rated for a fire.

A fire safe may help, I have mine up against a block wall in the basement... but I also have the guns insured.

While I'm at it, Theft! A local dick head gun safe salesman/company put a video up that showed two guys opening a 'decent' quality safe in about three minutes with some hand tools. He's a dick head because it's basically a training video for thieves. I just checked and he still has it up, I didn't post the link because it is a "training" video. The brand that he sells of course can not be broken into... again, another reason for insurance.

I make it a point not to charge lithium batteries in my attached shop. Got a number of power tools that use them, going to build a shed in the yard for my tools AND will charge all of my batteries there.

Our house burned to the ground in 1971. I still remember finding my Dad's burned guns (actions only) in the rubble. I wanted to restore them in shop class (back when you could take guns to school!), but the teacher advised me against it ("They've been heat tempered; you'll blow your head off!").

I was on the local volunteer fire dept a few years back. During a house fire (total loss) the owner asked me to focus my hose stream on a "refrigerator" barely visible through the fire and smoke. Turns out it was his gun safe that he wanted to keep cool. I never heard if his guns survived.

Good reminder on the lithiums. I never leave the house with chargers on, and I only charge batteries on a concrete floor away from anything combustible.

Saving money on a safe is always attractive. Some have a way better fire rating and temp rating than others. The Fin in the Cleveland area used to display a burnt safe but the interior was intact

Probably 98% of single family homes in the U.S. do not have sprinklers.

Some municipalities now have codes that require them on new construction, the largest local city here doesn't - the developers opposed them.

Sorry about your loss, happened to my oldest son while he was deployed overseas, he loss it all, guns and thousands of rounds of ammo, had a beautiful dream cabin in the woods. Came out with the clothes he had on his back. Also happened to a good friend of mine a few years ago, his was mostly smoke damage, son had some irreplaceable firearms that the insurance company low balled him on replacement valve, stay diligent with negotiating the valve of your contents. Insurance companies from what my son and the friend of mine experienced will work with you if you are diligent.

I've heard of guys bolting a chain to their safe and having the chain run through their wall. The thought is maybe they can pull it through incase of a fire in a different part of the house quick. Sorry for your loss.

If my house is on fire, the last thing I’m going to worry about is a safe.

About 20 years ago we built a new house to replace one burned down in the High Park fire. The owner was very involved in cowboy action shooting and had five gun safes. He showed us photos of the aftermath.

Three gun safes blew the doors open and were shaped like bowling balls, the other two the doors held but were still shaped like bowling balls.

He had a plastic bucket with about 50 lbs of silver coins in one safe. The silver was a big slag, with some coins melted into the slag a guy could still identify.

Picture a potato wrapped in tin foil in campfire coals that you forget to take out. That’s a gun safe when a house burns to the ground, I’ve seen dozens of gun safes from houses that burned down in wildfires here in California, zero guns were saved by “fireproof” safes.
