I had never heard of him until this morning, he was the topic of a YouTube channel that I like.

The story gets a little long winded but it’s an interesting story covering a modern day outlaw-cowboy and fur trapper that is still living.

Is he still working at the Home Depot in Boise?
Posted By: las Re: Claude Dallas - 02/19/24
POS. Though the one officer had a not-so-good rep that I had heard about all the way up here.
Posted By: TheLastLemming76 Re: Claude Dallas - 02/19/24
He’s rumored to be living off of the grid part time in AK and otherwise in either ID or NV.

I agree that I don’t respect poaching and that the officers probably didn’t deserve to be shot.

It’s an interesting story and one that I had never heard of. Playing Devils advocate Dallas probably didn’t do anything worse than any number of outlaws that we glamorize and make movies or write songs about today. He just did it a hundred years later.

If he hadn't been stupid, he'd have walked on justifiable homicide. He had both of them down and he should have left it at that. But, he was an idiot and he shot them both as they lay there. Then he tried to hide the bodies. It became murder 1 and there was nothing justifiable about it.

The YouTuber gave credit to the author of Give a Boy a gun for much of his info.

Interesting tidbit, my dad flew Tim Nettleton, the Owyhee County Sheriff to the San Francisco FBI office with Dallas's guns.

Evidently, it was next to impossible to preserve the chain of custody shipping them on a commercial flight.

That is interesting. From the sounds of it Dallas was a bit of a local folk hero at the time. At least as how portrayed in the channel that I linked. I’ve read about the “Mad Trapper” but hadn’t heard of Dallas.

I remember this. The wardens were out of control and he was a self-styled mountain man idiot. To put it kindly, a clash of cultures separated by about 100 years. It probably should NOT be looked at that way however.

Claude is the run of the mill scumbag, probably revered around here.

I had a copy of the book "Outlaw" about 35 years ago.
Should've kept it. For some unknown reason, used copies are commanding crazy prices now.
People seem to want to believe in the myth of the rugged individual living on his own terms in the Wild West.
I guess they're ok with him being a cold-blooded killer.

Another good read on the subject is a book called "Outlaw"
Posted By: Plumdog Re: Claude Dallas - 02/19/24
I read that book about 35 years ago, too. I think the book probably made him a folk hero of sorts; but before that nobody knew of him, and I doubt he was any "Last of the Mountain Men". The book also painted one of the wardens as an [bleep] that kinda had it coming.

So many opinions, none of them worth rancid dog poop. Who among you lived in that are during the time frame of the occurrence? Any one of you know Pogue or Elms? Any one of you know or have even met Claude Dallas? I lived in Winnemucca Nevada for just shy of ten years, from 1970 to 1979. Only reason I left was a job transfer. I don't know when the feud between Dallas and Pogue started and I d not know all the details of the why or wherefore. What I do know is Pogue was a dirty cop. One of his tricks was if he stopped you in your vehicle while out on a hunt, he'd ask for your gun and open it to check for a loaded chamber. Usually while hunting near the Idaho/Nevada. Then he'd rack the bolt closed, hand you your gun and tell you to go on. As soon as you got back in your truck, BAM! You'r under arrest for having a loaded gun in your truck. Happened every time unless you were smart enough to clear that chamber before getting back into, your vehicle. He busted an awful lot of people that was and I saw him do it. He was great for unintended entrapment like the above example. That's the kind of game warden he was. Elms I know nothing about as I never met the man. At least I don't think I did.

As to whether there was a hatred between Pogue and Dallas, Dallas never said anything to me but Pogue had/has kin living in Winnemuca and there were times he's be down in town at the Winner's Inn celebrating a birthday or something and be a few sheets to the wind. More than once I heard him say that it he caught Dallas out on the range, he'd shoot him down like a rabid dog. I know damn well if someone was shooting their mouth off that they were gonna kill me, I'd take them at their word and act accordingly.

Dallas on the other hand was a strange duck. A reasonably agreeable sort based on what contact I had. He did odd jobs in Winnemucca and I hired him to build a fence around my house. He did a good job of work and I paid him. Knew him well enough to say hello when he hit town. Talked guns with him a few times. We got along OK. I do know that most people in Winnemucca were on his side in the affair and that Pogue was intensely disliked by the locals.

The fact is only three people really know what went down out there in the Nevada desert and two ain't talking. None of us were there on the scene. I know the area, at least the Nevada side because I've deer hunted there. It's a lonely stretch of desert with miles and miles of nothing. It's really hard to say if you're still in Nevada or have crossed into Idaho. No white line denoting you're now in Idaho nor is there a fence with a sign saying NV/ID border. The late Pogue's favorite hunting grounds BTW. I wonder why?

Pogue sounds familiar.
Especially the last few lines.

Maryland's deer season come in before Pa's, and a fair number hunt both states.

There is a big pipeline right of way right along the line, and a lot of hunters always considered it the line. Until GPS, and an [bleep] game wardem got together.
Once he realized that pipeline was about 100 yards north of the Mason Dixon,
he committed serial rape for the first week of Maryland's season. For several years,
until it became very well known to stay way back from that ROW.

It's hard to believe anyone over 50 hasn't heard of Dallas.
His wanted picture was a fixture in Outdoor Life and F&S. For years.
After the shooting, and again after the jailbreak.

Personal sympathies?
Everything I've ever heard says Pogue brought it on himself.
(Not to say he deserved it)

Elms is reported to be OK, as wardens go.
Probably the only victim in the saga.

Dallas?
He was living my dream, undoubted other's too.

But breaking the law.

Maybe, if it had been Elms he would have came in?
Maybe not.

The totality of what he did clearly crossed the line.

PJ

Interesting as Pogue was an Id F&G officer, and it has never been illegal to carry a loaded firearm in your vehicle in Id.

In '79 I drove around a corner faster than a city cop liked. He pulled me over, and about schitt when he saw two rifles on the back seat of the car. Then when he racked the bolt and saw both had a chambered round, he was really unhappy.

There were no laws broken, so I went away without even a traffic ticket.

I live in the region and was amazed at the amount of local support Dallas garnered. Had he simply gone to town, he would have been back on the streets in half an hour.

PJ,
Your statement that Pogue would set people up to arrest them for having a loaded gun in the vehicle is simply WRONG.
It has NEVER been against the law to have a loaded gun in a vehicle here in Idaho.
It never happened.

I'm not trying to defend any actions Pogue may have taken. There is ample evidence to suggest that he was a bad cop who liked to abuse his authority and those he came in to contact with.

My readings are that loaded arms are fine in rigs here in Oregon and Nevada as well.

As to my teachings in Hunter Ed classes: Is it smart? No.

Presently, we cannot pack loaded arms (chambered or capped round) on our ATV's in Oregon. Again, fine in our highway rigs.

CD is a strange case. All the ladies of the Jury in Caldwell Id, about twenty miles from my house, loved the dude.

He was acquitted on murder charges, but convicted on manslaughter as I remember. Several jury members spoke out that the judge had betrayed the jury when he imposed the absolute max sentence for manslaughter.

Several jurors stated they would have not even voted for conviction on manslaughter, but for the "mercy shots" administered with the 22 after the main event. CD claimed the mercy shots were the least he could do for any animal in pain and suffering.

CD was also later acquitted on escape charges after his extended "vacation" from prison. He proved in court that there was a conspiracy to kill him in prison, and he escaped in self defense.

I am not stating an opinion one way another of CD's behavior. He made many stupid mistakes in his life.

It might be noted that many, many here claim they would emulate CD's actions when cops come to their door to enforce gun confiscation laws.

I grew up hunting the Owyhees for deer. It was 79 or 80 ( a year or two before the killing) Pogue came into our camp. he was looking for some kid that hadn’t returned to camp and was presumed lost. It was snowing and miserable weather. His questioning was more like an interrogation and we were guilty of something. He wasn’t friendly at all. When he left, I thought….what an a$$ hole.

When I heard that Pogue was killed, I wasn’t too surprised.

Bill was occasionally a pretty hard pill. A lot of it was because he was going borderline (macular degeneration?) blind and wasn't going to pass a physical in the foreseeable future. Part of that is why he was teamed up with Con on that day. All that, I was quite surprised when Con and Bill were killed. Hunters kill animals, not people. I know several IDFG COs that have been punched, and even a couple that had guns pointed at them, but Bill & Con were the first outright killings. In light of after events, Claude actually must be mite on the tough side. Not smart, nor rational, but physically tough. At the time, he was thought to be much more mouth than teeth.

Yep. That is some remote, rugged country down there. I like the Owyhees. I used to put in for the special elk and deer tags there. I was never lucky enough to be drawn. There are some biggies in that country.
