Please stop asking us to find your X. She left and isn't coming back. We don't know Y.

Boo hiss!

I chuckled.

Nothing funnier than being in a college Math 101 course and watching a college student stare at this equation on the board without a clue…

3x + 7 = 13 solve for X

A local teacher got arrested for carrying a ruler, a protractor, a calculator, and a book containing a table of trigonometric functions. He was charged with possession of "weapons of math instruction"!

"Something doesn't add up here", replied Arithmetic

"Well -- if he knew how to integrate, he wouldn't have that problem", choked Calculas

"Its not just a straight line" chimed Geometry.

" Many outcomes- its an inversion matrix", squeaked Differential equations.

Never found a use for algebra, on the other hand geometry and trig proved to be very useful.

You use it every day as part of Set Theory.

3x + 7 = 13 solve for X

Must be an easy 1 !

Even my being out of school for over 40 years, brain solved in seconds

This is a good example of ring theory-- a subset of Set Theory and the intuitive relationship to algebra

She's hiding in the library reading classics. She's X^^2.

I gotta ask...

Why ethanol? Do you farm corn?

You only think that. In practice, I bet you use it daily.

Yes, of course x = 2.

By 1, I meant the equation was easy !

Yes, x=2, but you were asked to solve for X which is undefined.

x != X

I go about daily life without the alphabet soup of algebraic equations very nicely.

Many commonly used measurements are merely algebra but just not written out in formal equations.

Hear about the constipated mathematician?
He worked the problem out with a pencil.

My first and last algebra teacher was named Mr. Boris
and he did on a daily basis.Really caught up on some good sleep in that class,
Only have used algebra several times in 50 years.I guess it ain't critical.

7th grade math. Shouldnt stump a college kid. They should find it Two Easy.

I never thought I would use algebra. Used it almost every day in the oilfield.
Posted By: Potsy Re: Dear Algebra: - 04/07/24
Algebra and any other math made my school days hell, my grades sucked and I never thought I’d use it.
Funny thing, I’m better at math now than I ever was then and “do” more math than I ever did in school.

My Grandad always said he didn’t understand algebra and had no use for it. Then go use it a few dozen times a day out in his shop. He used it and understood it, he just didn’t know what it was.
Posted By: Etoh Re: Dear Algebra: - 04/07/24
people use algebras (notice the plural) everyday and don't know it. its intuitive. one branch in particular called combinatorics is used and most folks just don't think of it as algebra. combinatorics is the math of groupings, and combinations, how many sentences did I just make not using capitals. Anyone that does gambling is using it.

why is a negative times a negative a positive? funniest answer I ever heard was the positive times a negative was already used and that was what was left to use.

most of the new inventions in plastics are combinatorics done on computer before they are made in the lab. Drug possibilities and Peptides (think semaglutide or LP-1s)

all electrical circuits are combinatorial

To be serious, I did well with the simple algebra, the advanced, not so well. I don't think the teacher understood it either.

I think I read, H L Hunt considered an education a hindrance to making money.
Posted By: P_Weed Re: Dear Algebra: - 04/07/24
I asked my Algebra teacher, "When am I ever going to use this?"

He replied, "Well you won't, but one of the smart kids might."
