MORROW, Ga. -- The FBI is investigating the beating of an African-American woman by a white man at a Cracker Barrel restaurant as a possible hate crime.

Morrow police said they arrested Troy Dale West, of Poulan, Ga. after he attacked Tasha Hill after she asked him to "be careful" at a Cracker Barrel restaurant.

Morrow police were called to the Cracker Barrel restaurant on Southlake Plaza Drive in Morrow Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers said they located the female victim and called for EMTs and Fire Department officials to assist. At the same time, the alleged offender in the case, Troy West, was detained at the scene, police said.

Police said an investigation revealed that the female victim, identified as Tasha Hill, was entering the Cracker Barrel with her 7-year-old daughter as West was leaving the restaurant. As West was leaving, the exit door came close to striking the 7-year-old daughter of the victim, police said. Hill, by all witness accounts, politely asked West to be careful, officials said.

"The man slung open the door pretty hard and fast and I had to push my daughter out of the way. I turned to the man and I just said, 'Excuse me sir, you need to watch yourself you almost hit my daughter in the face.' And from there it just went downhill," said Hill.

At that point, West became enraged and began to beat the victim in front of her 7-year-old daughter, according to police. Hill said she told West she was an Army servicemember and she did not want any trouble.

West threw her to the ground and hit her in the head with his fists and feet, police said. During the exchange, witnesses said West could be heard screaming racial slurs at the victim.

"Then he punched me in my face," said Hill. "And I fell to the ground and he proceeded to punch in my head and face."

Many witnesses stepped up to assist police in the investigation by providing written statements as to the events that transpired. Cracker Barrel was also helpful to police in this investigation, Morrow police said.

This case has been referred to the FBI Civil Rights Division for a possible violation of Federal Hate Crime Laws.

Once officers obtained witness statements on the scene and looked at video surveillance from the Cracker Barrel, West was arrested and charged with battery, disorderly conduct, and cruelty to children in the first degree.

West has bonded out of jail.

Mr. West may have a bit of 'quiet time' to ponder his actions.

I've never stood by and watch a woman beaten for any reason. Where were the men when this happened?

that was my first reaction......somebody should have brained him while he was doing it. and then given him the Goodfellas treatment after he hit the floor. but that's just me.

Much as I dislike the whole concept of hate crimes, since the laws are on the books this case certainly qualifies.

the discussion of the recent "cracker barrel" event appears to be gaining airtime on the local ATL media. folks are visiting the DA to make sure that all possible charges have been filed.

in other news, the potential "bad-shooting" of a Southern Baptist Preacher in Toccoa remains under wraps. No report after some 3 weeks of on-going investigation. i'm beginning to think something potentially bad is gonna come out of that event.

it's a tragedy no doubt. i wish the media would at least attempt to get the other side of the story, also. right now, it's a one-sided story, with much ado.

again, it's a tragedy, but surely everyone will have their day in a fair court? no injuries or bruises were shown on the taped interviews. no witnesses interviewed. just the young woman with her child in the scene.

i dunno. news said she was affiliated with the military. trained and prepared to fight, i would think. the old guy they showed on TV looked a bit tired, from my perspective.

How in the world can we ever be the color blind society that all the liberals want if the law requires us to check ethnicity? Why in the world should it matter what color she was? She was assulted, color has no place in this or any other case.

Oh, I don't think it had to be said. You just had to say it. Which, I think, says more about you than anything else.

The guy's not that old. I don't care how young and heavy she was, most women aren't going to be able to defend themselves unarmed against a man. I don't care if she's in the military, a black belt, a cop, or whatever, in a hand to hand encounter the man is usually going to prevail. It's just the way humans are built.

The guy is an a$$hole no doubt, and deserves a nice paid vacation in jail. However, I'm quite sure that the regular laws are more than capable of taking care of someone that beats up unarmed women. I detest the concept of "hate crimes" because it creates an animal farm type of system where some people are more special than others. It nullifies the concept that all are equal in the eyes of the law.

That is just wrong on many levels, and doing a beat down on a woman is rarely even close to being justified. The guy is an azzhole that needs some quality time with "Bubba" as a cell mate!

I saws the chick on CNN last night and she was asked whether she spit on the guy and she refused to answer. I think maybe she escalated the situation.

as far as the general unfairness of man vs. woman is concerned, likely many of us have served with Army Women who could beat the pants off of nearly any of us. i'm not saying that's the case here. i have no clue, but i do remember some women in the military i wouldn't want to mix it up with.

i was always told & taught to respect women, and back away from any physical disagreement. of course, i haven't ever been attacked by an angry woman either.
