One guy has a big ass truck he's gonna drive around in own doomsday.

Another one has taught his daughter to weld and has a son that can get into a fireman's suit in 2 minutes. Another son has a home-made bow and is in charge of security.

They cut a lot o'firewood too,....burn it in a stove outside,...

They're all fat.

I watched it when nothing else was on with the kids, until the episode with the couple and the sex shop. [bleep] unreal what they put on with no warning these days.

Wait till you see the episode on the zombie preppers... some virus is supposed to turn mankind into man-eating monsters within hours! Freakin [bleep] is unreal, don't know if this is just TV hoopla or if people actually believe this stuff.

I only saw part of one....then had to turn it off. It was a couple of overage hippies who had bought a missile silo, taken out all the missile stuff and computer screens, had it all decorated and a video surveillance system outside. wondered what they'd do if an intruder showed up....the old hippy dude said he had a Moisin Nagant, and muttered darkly about some other weapons.

but the killer was when they started talking about how survival was lot better if you had a team, so they assembled their team of fellow suvivalists.....and an impressive array of skills they had. One was an herbal healer and spiritual guide, a fat chick was an organic baker, her fat friend was a cable installer who could keep the video working so they could see who was coming to kill them, one guy was damned interior decorator......and after they all got likkered up on red wine they started dancing around and chanting in some kind of a drum circle thing.

I'd rather get et by zombies than hang around those weirdos.

I haven't watched all the episodes. I didn't see that one. Some are informative and some aren't and some have realistic fears and others are pretty irrational. National Geographic makes out like they're all out to lunch. Personally, I think a dirty bomb is not extremely unrealistic given our border situation whereas the dead arising from their graves isn't realistic at all. I think National Geographic is pretty bogus for acting like one scenario is just as likely as the other.

There have been a couple of fairly hot chicks on there. The kids ain't interested and take off to their rooms when it comes on anyway so...What gets me was this Oriental chick in NYC who planned to bug out. She's like wearing some braless tank top and microshorts IIRC. My thought was, why not dress in some baggy asssed sweats or the like if you really wanta be unobtrusive.

What Steve? You mean your next Katrina event scenario doesn't involve like, nekkid dancing after you smoke some righteous wacky bakky and then chant some as the flood waters rise? laugh

I tried to watch one episode out of curiosity, or maybe it was two. Saw an old fart trying to camo a an 18-wheeler and a younger old man who brought home 50 lb bags of rice and the family put it in 2-liter bottles and they had a bunch.

The concept is interesting, Hollyweird managed screw it up.

What are you complaining about...now you know where the fattest, softest targets are, and they have told you what security measures they have.

Baker chick can be chained to the oven and keep you supplied with bread to hold all that long pig.

That show's too goofy for me but the fat farmer that was on one of the early episodes had a YouTube clip with some really good info.

He mentioned that the Mormon church has canneries (open to the public) in many communities and that these canneries are an excellent option for picking up dry goods (rice, beans, oats, flour, etc.) at a very good price for long-term storage. I checked it out and we just happened to have one about 3 minutes from where I work! As a result, I was able to pick up a few hundred pounds of canned dry goods for dirt cheap. I hope I never need it and it's just $$ down the drain but it sure is nice peace of mind to know I have it just in case. If I tried to get that much food from one of the trendy "survival" sites, I would've paid 10x as much for 1/10th the amount! I hope others here check it out - you can thank me later..... wink

Had one of those fella's stop here to deliver a pizza and wanted to buy my truck, but not for the price it was worth. He wanted it to "bug out" when he needed. When I asked him where he was going to "bug out" too, he hadn't thought of that.

there's been a fair number who did the drive, but having fuel, and hanging on to it are 2 different things when in C.A.

and he won't get the mileage he hopes when the roads are washed out, and he's gotta detour to find a ford or ferry...

and every detour has it's "toll booth" grin

There was one guy that was over 400 pounds. He didn't have a power chair so he used his lawn tractor! The experts suggested he lose weight! Wow. I've seen a couple episodes. I think it's a showcase for crazy people. With the exception of the people who have dug in and have a 'compound' with food, water, a garden, animals... I think the rest are toast.

Nebraska--- Your post was one of the most pertinent posts I've read in a long time!

Thanks for the heads up. I have store bought and home done (SHTF food)..but for the time and money I'd spend doing it myself I'd just as soon prefer paying the LDS. They are a great and valuable resource!

Thanks.

When they all start buggin out, hope they don't come to TX! They will make for a target rich environment here at the Ranch.

With Texas now being the 2nd most populous state, I doubt you'll have to worry about people coming there to provide targets.

1. California
2. Texas
3. New York
4. Florida
5. Illinois
6. Pennsylvania
7. Ohio
8. Michigan
9. Georgia
10.North Carolina

About 20% of the whole country's people live in California and Texas.

Some sort of catastrophic event is certainly possible. Since I live close to DC a dirty bomb is certainly a concern. There is almost a certainty there will be a terrorist attack some where in the near future & in addition to conventional explosives nuclear material &/or biological agents may well be used. The other major threat is a electromagnet surge from a pulse weapon that would destroy the power grid, computers, & everything electrical or electronic. The US military already has these weapons so its likely other countries do as well.
All of that said most of these preppers are far over board. If a catastrophic event occurs the government will have been listening to conversations & computer chatter telling them where the private stores of survival food is located. You can bet that in the national interest these large food caches will be seized. Certainly it makes sense to store a reasonable cache of food & water to last a week or so during an emergency, but not thousand & thousands of dollars tied up.
Posted By: Mannlicher Re: Doomsday preppers! - 01/23/13
I just can't watch the show. I am convinced that the whole affair is being done to discredit prudent folks, who are making an honest effort to prepare for a time of unrest.
That would mean that every group of 'preppers' in this series is scripted, and shaped to portray them as idiots and stupid. The producers and writers have been very successful in that.
No one makes fun of preppers though, during a 'Sandy' or other disaster, when they are able to care for themselves and their family, while others are out of bottled water on day one.
I make no apology for my efforts to have on hand, things that I may well need.

Yeah, just about every single person I know that either lived through the depression, or was born shortly thereafter is in some way, shape, or form a prepper. They don't call it that, of course. But come some type of disaster I can promise you they won't be the ones roasting their cat and drinking their own pee and bitching about it on facebook.

I've worried about EMP for years because I think it's something that could very well happen. The whole idea of it sucks.

I agree with everything you say until you get to the seizing preps part. Most "preppers" are people that buy ten guns and then have a bulk pack of Sam's toilet paper and a couple of cases of Evian and think they're set. I just don't see the Feds coming after stuff like that. If you're broadcasting all your preps on a website that many of your neighbors frequent, it could be a problem. Otherwise, the food the Feds would go after are steel bins full of grain, herds of cattle and the like. I agree with you that they would seize it. Expect to be paid in worthless FRNs' too.

I'm old enough to know a lot of folks that lived through the depression, especially since my parents both grew up in those troubled times. Personally, I think it made a lot of folks about half nuts. No offense or disrespect to the oldsters, but just being real... Most of them I knew resembled hoarders rather than preppers. I fail to see how a thousand Folger's coffee cans in the basement or a few hundred plastic butter cups is gonna save your asss. Most of the depression era folks I knew were too tight to buy much in the way of preps.

Honestly these prepper shows are a sign of the times. People looking to prepare for the end of the consumer age by trying to accumulate enough [bleep] to see them through its demise. It's just a perfect analogy.

America wants a pill to allow them to eat cheeseburgers 7 nights a week and lose weight. This is no different. Real change and real skills take time and patience. Finding a place where you have family and community that takes care of one another doesn't even occur to them. They'd rather buy a bunch of [bleep] and take a bunch of useless skills into the bunker and play house.

They chase phantoms of romantic Mad Max scenarios and completely ignore or deny the real emergency that is staring the industrial world in the face. I am quite sure that in 100 years when people have come to grips with the new reality that they will never understand how we missed seeing it. Maybe it's escapism. Maybe the real problems we face are so daunting that these preppers are just trying to invent a future in their minds that they feel they can deal with on their own when the reality is that most of it is completely beyond our control.

I know a few people who have been "preparing" for the end of the world or civilization.

Wanna know something about them? They don't tell you what they've done! They keep their mouths shut and go about their business as if it were a regular day.
Posted By: GunGeek Re: Doomsday preppers! - 01/23/13
Everyone has that crazy uncle.

What gets me is the money they spend Most of them look rather destitute, yet they spend a small fortune on their bomb shelters. The missile silos didnt sell cheap. I mean they were cheap for what they are, but in comparison to a house, theyre not cheap.

Always thought a missile silo would make a really cool house. I'd use the missile part to have big indoor bonfires.

I understand what your are saying, I see alot of that too. But I also know that most of the ones around here have canners and gardens and fruit trees, and know how to get that done. They have been doing it for years. And alot of them can survive on damn near nothing if they need to. Its a mental thing, too many of the younger generations that haven't gone through that kind of stuff are just too soft. And maybe it is different around here too, we are rural farm and cattle country, right on the edge of the old dust bowl country. They took care of their neighbors, and helped do anything that needed done.

When we moved into the house my MIL had been in for years, there were over 800 pints and quarts of home canned stuff in the cellar. I have been dumping the old stuff and filling them back up from our garden. There was also 5-30 gallon trash cans full of old fabric that was junk, and ALOT of other junk as well. But there was good stuff in there too. Like Kerosene lamps and oil. Cots and blankets. Camp toilet and paper in case you get trapped in the cellar. Lots of good stuff. Mainly I just hauled out the junk and reorganized the good stuff. I was way ahead. We live in Tornado Alley, and I think about things like the storage building getting blown down on top of the cellar, and maybe it could be a couple days before someone digs you out. It wasn't but a couple years agoa big blue norther ice storm left us without power for a couple days. You just never really know.

i wouldn't get too worked up about this or any other "reality" show. it's just entertainment tv, with a script, editing, make-up, several cameras per scene, light folks, director, and producer. i have "soon to be" kin who produces these shows.

bottom line - they do what they do so you will watch! if you learn something, all the better, but they want you focused when that next commercial comes on.

That's about what I see it as. Some of them are nuts, but even then, many times you still learn something and are at least entertained. It can't be worse than watching some white chick flash gang signs on BET.

Haven't you got something better to do than follow me around on thread after thread making inane and stupid insults? Are you really so lonely that you will insult someone to try and get into a discussion with them?

You are a weak minded fool and I don't wish to have anything to do with you ever again. Insults I can deal with. Childish logic I can endure. Yep, you're right. The old folks can survive on almost nothing. No money. My Mom and Dad like to drive around aimlessly a lot and that is about their only vice, money wise. It shames me to think how much less money they live on than we do. The old folks were/are tougher than my generation too. My parents went through some hard times. Today is nothing compared to what their generation endured.

I live in Tornado Alley too, about eighty miles from Joplin...

I thought you put me on ignore. Guess you're not strong-minded enough yourself to follow through. Guess what genius, I was posting on this thread before you were. How is it that I'm following you around when that is the case? Then again, you wouldn't know because you're such an arrogant prick that you just clicked on the thread and immediately started running your mouth without reading what anybody else said, much like I'd imagine that in real life you run your mouth without listening since everything you have to say is muy importante.

There's nothing I'd like better than to leave you out of the discussion. Go away and I will.

You think everyone is just sitting on the edge of their chair waiting to hear what some hoopie from Kansas thinks of another poster they will never meet.

You really are a piece of work.

Will
lol Don't go mad, just go. You're the one littering things up. We were having a quite excellent discussion before you showed up with your opining. Everybody here was just breathlessly awaiting you too.

You're the one who said you were putting me on Ignore.

PS: BTW congrats Ethan you have just become the very first user I have ever put on ignore. You bring nothing to the table but insults and bullshit and to be honest you have become too boring to listen to any more.
I'm just pointing out that besides being a run-of-the-mill moronic dickweasel with an overly inflated opinion of himself, you're a liar in the bargain. I've never said I'd put you on Ignore because I prefer a more proactive approach. If you can hang on here long enough, I'll teach you to actually read the thread before you pollute it with your active presence. That way you'll know where I'm likely to be and can avoid my "weak-minded" insults to your delicate insensiblities.

The others were having a very nice conversation right up until you posted the first stupid insult to me. Haven't you noticed that the thread dried up after that? 46 minutes without a single post?

You [bleep] in Bristoe's thread.

I've found that when I step in a cow flop it sometimes get's messy before it gets cleaned off. I hate it that poor old Bristoe's thread got all messy but with cowshixt you just gotta clean it offen your boot.

Your first post was negative and filled with vulgarity before I ever made a post to you. Add hypocrite to liar.

They chase phantoms of romantic Mad Max scenarios and completely ignore or deny the real emergency that is staring the industrial world in the face. Maybe the real problems we face are so daunting that these preppers are just trying to invent a future in their minds that they feel they can deal with on their own when the reality is that most of it is completely beyond our control.

If I was you, I'd get a different pic than that Retard for my avatar. Somebody might mistake it for your picture and think you've got some sort of mental handicap. Bristoe says that he appreciates your concern and accepts your apology for shixtting all over his thread about crazies preparing for the dead arising and triggering nuclear war, bird flu, chronic halitosis and such.

Will told me that he and his boyfriend prefer Whoppers. Then again he also said that he only opened this thread because he thought it said, "Doomsday Peckers".

You didn't even spell it right, but whether a play on words or a mistake the wonders of the internet never cease as it took me right to the definition.

I don't have a link for Commie of the year for you. Penguin is ahead of you though.

Like I give a schit what you think or post. Laughing, I do know a liberal or two who have much better manners than you and are more pleasant to be around.

Could it be that the latent intent is to subliminally convey the thought that those who believe our country is heading toward the new world order or believe economic collapse is more probable than not are stupid people?

If you two morons really didn't care you wouldn't spend so much time responding. Your actions betray you. Both of you are pseudo intellectual fops pretending to be conservatives but in actuality, pretty freaking liberal.

As far as pleasant to be around, why would you not love your own?

It could be. There is a certain element of comedy to a lot of these shows, but people love the characters on Swamp People and Moonshiners. These folks aren't ongoing characters though.

I think most folks see the crazy ones for what they are and take some pointers from the ones who are actually sane and preparing for realistic challenges to their lives and lifestyles.

I tune in when I think about it, but I'm not glued to the TV.

well, yeah, that is true. the whole thingy revolves around the trajectory of the fall-off in the population after the collapse. or, said in another way, how soon order of one kind or another is restored.

in the worst case scenarios, those who die soonest will be much luckier than those who die later.

Not a huge fan of the show but after watching last nights show I am thinking these people are just nuts. The guy with the truck who is burring pvc pipes all over the place with Glock pistols in them is just asking to be disapointed when he arrives back at the location and findes them missing. And the people who were "lead" to the house in the smokey mountains by the previous owner who is dead? And the woman is now "channeling" the dead chick and carrying on her preping so when a commet hits the earth people will have a place to go? Yikes, that was a bit much for me.

Agreed.

Mannlicher nailed why it's getting a bad wrap - our liberal elite need helpless subjects so they can be in power and can't stand it when folks actually try to not be totally dependent on somebody or some entity for their safety/security.

I don't prepare for "the end of times" or any crap like that - I prepare for likely interuptions to vital services that could put me or my family in a bad spot or worse, in danger. Nothing more, nothing less. The folks that really get torked about "preppers" (i.e. people with foresight and common sense) are the ones that either can't prepare for anything because they're living check to check - one step away from misery if a disaster hits - or the ones that don't think there will be a need. Either one is a fool..... smirk

that would suck - to have your Bug out shelter cleaned out when you show up.

I haven't watched this show but I did watch a show about a guy that builds the shelters. He was supposed to be an expert builder and during the course of the show he had one couple call him up to let him know their shelter filled up with rain water and another guy called him up to let him know that his "super secret" location that they couldn't even tell you the county it was in had the generator stolen because it was sitting out in broad daylight above the shelter.

Can you imagine the hunter or teenager stumbling upon a 3500 watt high $$$ generator out in the middle of nowhere and not a soul around for 20 miles? if he'd only known what was below him he could have eaten on potted meat and MRE's for 2 months.

Not a bad idea. If I don't get back to the hills soon I might be forced to buy some from a legitimate store.

Running a still? Now that is a skill set that might actually be of use in a long term emergency situation. smile

Exactly. If you want to know the kind of things you might reasonably need to be prepared for, just look back through the last 100-150 years of history. Or even the last 75 years worth in "civilized" countries. There is enough right there to cause plenty of concern to anyone with a rational mind. History does repeat itself, and usually throws in a couple new twists each time it does. Just knowing bad things can happen, and having a reasonable plan in case they do, can make things alot less painful.

Alot of those folks on Doomsday Prepper are just batchit crazy though, or the show at least makes them out to be anyways.

This has been my thought the whole time. Furthermore, there was a producer or some hollyweird type that works for NatGeo on another forum and admitted that they coax them into saying and doing weird [bleep] to make the show interesting. They tried to talk the fat girl in Houston to killing her cat. It was suggested that the dumbass that shot himself was paid to do it.

They go after the lowest common denominator and try to pass it off as your average "prepared" person. They want them to see crazy and demonize them. Kind of like what they do with gun owners.
