Been thinking where I want to settle down one day, always wanted to go out east towards Wyoming or one of the Dakota's.. then realized I would miss blacktail hunting and would still want to be close to family.
Thinking maybe north might be where I want to go.
I would like
The coast for fishing, surfing, and seafood Blacktails because I love hunting them Mulie's, whitetails, elk, antelope, and bear. Pig would be a bonus And non retarded laws that are in California.. they were talking about doing away with the bullet button as it is and making all California lead free
Pictures are welcome for you Oregon guys..
How hard is to get a tag in Oregon? Draw or is it OTC?
I've spent a grand total of a week in Portland/Vancouver. The sun was shining for a total of 2 hours. Cousin lives at Tillamook. He said it usually rains about 35 days a month, give or take a few days.
If I waS forced in Oregon, it would have to be on the east side of the state. I admit, my opinion is based on limited experience and heresay.
I used to hunt mulies on the east side, them Orygun boys used to say "you just died and went to Orygun"! Two kinds of elk, three kinds of deer, ocean, desert, steelhead, crab, whitewater rafting, bird hunting and skiing all year round! Prime tags do take awhile to get!
The west side south from about Roseburg isn't nearly as wet as farther north. Eugene? The UO teams aren't called the Ducks for nothing. West of the Cascades it's high desert all the way to Idaho/Nevada...and beyond. The central part of the state is high desert from CA to Burns, then some mountains and much greener on up to the Columbia. There aren't many people in the entire SE part of the state for 1 main reason - no water.

Medford area might not be a bad place for you to look over. Coast is not real close but I-5 to Calif. is. Not as wet as west, nor as deserty and cold as some places east.
Nice country out there. I've spent time around Portland area and area's within an hour or so, and have driven out to Mount Hood as well. Portland is a liberal city, but the people are nice.
Well, I've only lived in Oregon for 61 years and have lived in Medford, Salem, Woodburn, Dundee and Myrtle Creek (basically south and Willamette Valley regions). If I were a young man interested in Oregon I would look around the Roseburg area. Very conservative area (in a liberal leaning state). Roseburg has a population of 20,000. Deer and elk tags are over the counter, but both have been hurt by the abundance of cougars (an initiative in 1994 banned the use of dogs for bears and cougars). Roseburg is a little over an hour to the coast and and hour and a half from eastern Oregon (antelope and mule deer). Climate is mild and not too rainy. Overall, in your situation I would look at Idaho, although compared to California, Oregon is still attractive (which is proven by the number of Californians that have moved here in the past 30 years.

Had a job offer from Nosler a few years back. When I went to interview, I remember thinking the Bend area was a pretty big departure, terrain-wise, from Portland and eastern OR. (My pop's family is from around Nyssa and Apple Valley.) My impression was that Bend seemed to be a little more right-leaning, read sane.
All of our family is scattered down the coast from Seattle to Grants Pass. Now that I'm retired we've been considering moving that direction. I can sure tell you that property prices are higher in western OR than they are in ID.
Potland, Sale'em and EuGene don't make up the state of Oregon, contrary to popular belief... they occupy about 3/4 of 1 percent of the state's geography.. however sadly they out number all of the rest of us about 52 to 48%.. and they vote liberal....
but for the rest of the state, minus a few islands of Insanity... Ashland and Bend for instance, the rest of the state is predominantly conservative to very conservative...
like anywhere in the west, or course we have high profile California liberals that come up here, get involved in politics and being 'community organizers' like the one in the White House... who are on a mission to screw it up like every other place they go...
get past that, its a great place...
the liberals running the government sucks, but where doesn't when they get entrenched....
and as my son puts it, it only rains once a year in Oregon... from Thanksgiving to May...sometimes late April...
but it is still drier than Washington, which is much drier than BC....
it isn't as wonderful as it was in the 70s, but then where else is anyway....
and as far as hating Californians, it is something you have to deal with... but living here since 1995 and not coming from California, I learned one important thing about anyone who will bitch at someone being from California...
That turns out to be from California transplants...that got here before you did...
in typical self centered Californian Fashion, each one thinks they were the last good Californian across the State Line...
If you like bear hunting you will love Oregon. Unfortunately its easier to go harvest a bear then a deer or elk here. Darn cougars put a huge dent in the population. Left part of the state is lib and the right is right. I was born and raised in Bend and will be moving to AK eventually to escape all the blaze orange.
To describe the average Oregon native this little 'story' holds pretty true...
An outfitter in Eastern Oregon takes three clients out on an Elk Hunt....
On the final day, all three hunters score a huge bulk elk each, and spirits are of course high around the campfire at dinner time....
After the conversation dies down after dinner, and they are just starring into the fire, the Guy from Houston walks over to his pack and takes out a bottle of Tequila....
He downs a big slug of it, puts the cap back on and tosses it in the air over the fire... He pulls out his pearl handled Colt 45 and fires a shot exploding the bottle and its contents over the fire, while he yells "YEEEEEEEE HAW!"
the other two hunters and guide look at him in surprise....
The Texan explains, "By God boys, that's how we celebrate in Texas, and don't worry about that bottle of Tequila, we have lots of that in Texas!"
so after about 5 minutes of quiet, the guy from California gets up and goes over to his pack and pulls out a bottle of Napa Valley Wine... he pulls the cork and take a big slug of the wine, and then recorks the bottle....
he then throws the bottle in the Air over the fire and pulls out his AK 47 Assault rifle and unleashes an entire 30 round clip at it exploding the bottle over the fire and Yells "YIPPPEEEEE".... by golly that is how we celebrate in California!!!! and don't worry about that bottle of Napa Red Wine, we have plenty of that....
So it is quiet around the campfire for another 10 minutes or so, and the Texan keeps looking at the local hunter from Oregon, wondering what he is going to do...
Finally the guy from Oregon feels the pressure, so he walks over to his pack and pulls out a bottle of Henry Weinharts Beer from Portland, and tips it up and downs the whole thing in a couple of gulps....
He tosses the bottle up in the air over the campfire, and then aims his 12 gauge double barrel shotgun that has been in the family for 4 generations and blasts the Californian with both barrels....
The Texan looks at him in shock, while the Oregon hunter catches the bottle.. and the outfitter sits there and snickers...
The old Oregon Hunter points at the Californian and says to the Texan, Awww Don't worry about him, we got plenty of those.... then holding up the bottle of Henry Weinharts Beer, but this bottle, that's worth a Nickle!!!
and Rogue's a great example of the great folks that live here...
but if they have a fault, it would be how subtle they can be at times...
Mike, personally I love Californians.... Just like I love Mexicans... but I love Californians when they are in California, like I love Mexicans, only when they are in Mexico.. where they belong...
Well Mike, when you get depressed about that, there is always Cave Junction or Wolf Creek if ya get bored and wanna really step up to HippieStan.....and primitive cultures...
hell with all the Mary Jane they smoke in CJ, the recent fires were burning a week before the locals realized anything was out of the ordinary....
Rolled through the IV a couple days ago headed back from fishing. Holy crap what a bunch of freaks. Then I went to work yesterday and took a nice long run.
Today while running, I saw a guy hugging a burnt out tree tree stump.
ya know Mike, before I moved here, I never believed in aliens... but when you live among some of them, well its kind of hard to continue to ignore them....
so many clowns around here on Meth... nothing surprises me any more...
I went to a wake of Friday in CJ of a scout leader that had an undiagnosed aortic aneurism, and it killed him at 50 yrs old...
darn wake and I couldn't believe the weirdos at that either....

I started out in LaGrande and also lived in The Dalles, Grants Pass and Corvallis before I left to pursue the Air Force life in 1975. There's not one place that will meet all your needs without a bit of travel time ... and the surfing thing ... the Oregon coastal waters are a bit cool for that (usually in the 40's) due to a phenomenon called upwelling.
I loved the hunting/fishing in and around LaGrande. This was mostly trout and seasonal migrating Steelhead and Salmon. There were only muleys in the area then (now some whitetails) and the Rocky Mtn Elk. A trip to the coast was around 6 hours one way.
In The Dalles we had the Columbia River for warm-water species and sturgeon. The Deschutes was nearby for Steelhead and trout. The area is fairly dry with a decent muley population and not many elk. A trip to the coast was around 3 1/2 hours.
Grants Pass featured the Rogue River, dry climate, proximity to hippies and a shorter trip to the coast. There are some decent blacktails there as well as an occasional muley at higher elevations. The Rogue has a great salmon/steelhead fishery.
Corvallis is between the two crapholes (Portland and Eugene) but had plenty of fishing (Alsea, Siletz, Santiam rivers) and just an hour to the coast. The blacktail population was decent but hunting was tough in that very thick (well-watered) vegetation. It was just a 1 1/2 hr drive to the high desert area (Bend) where there were muleys. The Roosevelt elk was the species in the coastal range.
The entire state has such a diverse ecosystem ... wet coastal, river valleys between mountain ranges, high mountains and high desert. If I had my druthers I'd be back in the NE part of the state (LaGrande) where there was a smaller population of like-minded folks and ample opportunities to quickly get away from it all. The most beautiful place on earth (my opinion) was the Eagle Cap wilderness, just a couple of hours away.
We gave it a long hard look but it seems like it will be like California before long.
I wanted to be the exception to the stereotype about California immigrants. The first thing I wanted to do on arrival was get rid of the stupid bullet buttons on my AR's and throw away the 10 rd. mags.
I wanted some space around me where I could do whatever the fark I wanted to do without bothering anyone or being bothered.

My wife's family is from Oregon, so we go to visit regularly. Your analysis seems to jive pretty well with what I've seen. Last few times we went, we stayed in Bend. The areas we traveled through out in the sticks seemed like some great places and the country itself is beautiful. We love the diversity in geography, as well as the climate. That being said, the populated areas seem waaaayyyy over-regulated. I think you have to get a permit to pick up a pinecone or stick a shovel in the ground. Our cities down here have some terrible social issues which make most Oregon cities seem like something from a fairy tale, yet it seems like there are always too many activists/weirdos/politicians up there who are too smart for their own good. Certainly the yin to our yang, although the rural areas are not quite so different from our own, just a lot cooler in the summertime..... (grin)
The only hippies in my family are native Oregonians from the Bend area, plenty more like 'em in the Ashland area.
That said, there is still some good stuff in Oregon. Toss your Cali plates as you cross the border, lots of hate for Californians, I got a load of [bleep] from some a-hole at a Big R sporting goods store in White City a few years back when buying a license due to being a liberal treehugging Californian.....
Lots of questions even though I have plenty of time.. ducks in a row and what not.
If you can pull a doe tag, then you can shoot two deer.
20 miles out of the bigger cities and the politics change. Income taxes are the same, though. As much I love the state, I won't be retiring here for that reason.
Funny, two of my best friends moved from California a few years back, the one that moved to Oregon is the absolute most accomplished salmon & steelhead fisherman I know, his resume, skills & knowledge is mind numbing.
The other moved to western Montana, he is a multiple Grand Slammer with a big game trophy collection that is beyond stunning, an extremely good trapper too with a collection of Newhouse traps that you just wouldn't believe.
Both live with the curse of being ex Californians and because of such are rated as second class citizens by many natives...
Sorry, ripping on California is favorite past time. I don't really hate all Californians, I know better than that. The California hated by Oregonians is more a state of mind. The State of Jefferson type Californian has never been the problem.
I get that most of Cali is actually very conservative, just like Oregon. We have Multnoma County (Portland), Eugene, Bend and Ashland. Cali has the Bay and the LA areas. Both states are ruled by the metro areas.
As a kid Oregon was far less than a million in population. Now it's closer to 4mil. Almost all of that growth is from immigrating Californian. I fully understand that most of them are very good people running from the crap down there.
I have often heard why people are leaving California because it sucks, but then in the next sentence tell me how it was so much better, than up here. Got it. Most of the hippies up here are from California stock. Most of everyone up here is from California stock.
Did I mention how absolutely, I really do love California from about Redding north. Jefferson State.
I'm a native Oregonian. Oregon will be like California in another 20 years, or less. I'd move to Eastern Oregon if I could. We are three miles from town now and the Princess thanks that's too far.
I'm a native of Virginia... I am also a military dependent growing up... so I have lived and traveled pretty much all over the entire country....
of the things I hate in Oregon, If I had to leave here and settle somewhere else, the number of states I'd move to is made up of a pretty short list... much shorter than it was 20 years ago when I moved to Oregon...
a lot of places I still love to travel to, but when you just visit, you don't have to live much with all the local State Governmental BS....
I grew up in S. Oregon (Rogue River area), back in the '40s and '50s', when indeed Oregon was a great and beautiful state. However, around the late '50s and early '60s, the Californians started their massive migration north. Supposedly, to get away from the librel way of life! How soon they forgot, because it sure didn't take them long to try to convert Oregon, to the same thing that they fled California for! In '65, I did my own northerly migration. Have went back a couple of times for visits, but the durn state has gotten so librel, I think my visits are even over!! Twink
I'd bet you don't hate them as much as I do, since I'm surrounded by the bastards...
You are pretty much right on target Rogue.
I'd load up the U-haul today, but I'm anchored with a wife that simply will not leave, she doesn't see the world around her like I do, lucky her.
And you were always the one fighting to defend California, sir..
is that bad now.
I still have it better than many but it's getting worse all the time and with a democratic supermajority I have pretty much lost all hope.
I sadly watched as they banned trapping, mountain lion hunting, hunting with hounds, are proposing a lead ammo ban and are adding new gun laws daily.
(Look for coyote hunting restrictions this winter, it's coming)
My kind of people are disappearing at an alarming rate, I see liberal, progressive treehuggers infiltrating the department of fish and game to the point where they changed the name to "The Dept. Of Fish & Wildlife", a change that cost millions of dollars in this nearly bankrupt state.
Kids can now use either sex restrooms based on which sex they feel like they are on that particular day.
We have to do bi-annual smog checks on our vehicles to get them registered, I registered my wife's car and my pick up last month and it was close to $800.00.
We have "spare the air" days where we have to check the status before we can light our wood stoves in the winter.
Building permits are astronomically expensive and difficult to get.
We have 10 day "cooling off period" before we can take home a firearm that we purchased "for our protection".
Our Governor and his Lieutenant are radical leftist treehuggers and eagerly sign any anti hunting or anti gun bill that comes down the pipe.
I'm a native of Virginia... I am also a military dependent growing up... so I have lived and traveled pretty much all over the entire country....

Oregon is a big state, most of the population is in the Willamette valley. I moved from Oregon to Montana because of the population growth, the liberals are not just from California. The high tech growth really changed the state politics along with Nike. Aside from Bend (really yuppie now), the East side is nice, but not many jobs. A lot of the coast is still pretty decent if you don't mind rain 366 days a year .
There is still not much in most of the East side besides ranches and farms and it's 2/3 the land mass of the state. Oregon has some strict land use laws, so land around Portland is scarce and people are crowded. Finding a place outside of town is tough and expensive since most property has to be 80+ acres to build on.
For you Montana guys. Is Montana the next western state to slip into a more liberal mode as more people from the east, from California (specifically Hollywood) move there? The Senate author of Obamacare is from Montana and Montana has 2 democratic Senators and has elected a democratic Governors in the last several elections. What's your view of the future?

Montana has been Democratic controlled for a long time. Farmers, miners, and the reservations tend to vote Democrat. At least they are all 2nd amendment supporters, and our state finances are in the black. The two Democratic senators are turds more aligned with the national party than the state.
