Right about where the 1st T is on 'The Far West', there should be a small blue spot for Left Coast Annex - Sun Valley, ID, home of the CA liberals. It most certainly isn't part of The Far West.
Off the chart wink

Well geographically I'm from the far west, but I lived for a little over a decade in what the map calls the Deep South, and I tend to identify with Southerners better than westerners. Yankeeedom people are weird, and left coast is just freaking nuts.

Does "from" mean born, previous places, current places???
Your culture stems from where you were raised, primarily up through mid-teens. it instills your commonly held speech patterns, and celebrations and observances.

Some, especially military brats are raised in a different location every 2-4 years and often don't form those 'cultural identities.

Often, people will adopt and/or substitute the cultural norms of their current location.

As has been mentioned, there is more and more blending across this great land of ours.

Unfortunately with that blending the country hasn't fared so well. Only takes one bad ingredient in a recipe to ruin it, aka the turd in the punch bowl.

Sure. Jeff0 was a moderate, too. lol....

Most liberals (like you) refuse to own up to what they are.

The "think for myself" line that you really like to use a lot is common among liberals too, and just as false as most things you believe.

And as far as this statement goes:

I can start any political conversation and tell you what you're going to say about it.

we should all take that as a compliment to our steadfast values and opinions.
American first; all the other garbage 2nd if at all.
Born and raised in the Spanish Caribbean well before it was that, when it was still part of the Deep South. Southern is my native language and heritage, y'all.

Lived in Yankeedom briefly, couldn't get away fast enough.

For the last 25 years have made my home in the Far West (the best place I've ever lived by a long, long, long shot) although for the last few years in a city with creeping inroads from the Left Coast, something which unfortunately plagues most larger cities in this area.

True.

My point was that regional (cultural) differences, while still present, are becoming muted.

Some of that can be attributed to chain restaurants and box stores.

I'd guess that my dad was a product of one of the great blenders in our society. Ie.-WWII...

He was born and raised deep south.

I was born a construction gypsy kid, but most of my early memories are deep south...

I'd agree that not all of the blending has benefited our nation. It let the camel of tolerance into our national tent.
Tolerance is a popular notion, but played out it leads to system dependence, and supports such calamities as gender equity.

Gender equity demands that any 90 lb school girl with a degree can be the principal of a high school that teaches a mix of kids including 200 lb.+ boys.
This leads to zero tolerance school policies, and eventually to those policies being enacted as legislation. What utter bullshit we have come to accept...

I do believe that national elections are important. I think that to fundamentally change America for the better though, we need to start with our school board elections and get rid of the 90 lb school girl principals...

No doubt but I was orienting the red swath from east to west because someone was incredulous that Appalachia extended into Texas (far west of Virginia.)

Look, if both sides are for big government, which side do you find yourself on?

I don't sit on any fences, I weigh each issue and make up my own mind. I really can't care any less if liberals or conservatives agree with me or not. In fact, I kinda worry if one of those two sides agree with me; makes me think I missed something.

I don't care about political sides, I care about what's right and what's wrong. I tend to find that on most issues BOTH sides have it wrong and have it that way purely for political expediency.

But I'm not wishy washy about any issue, I have a firm opinion and I can make my case.
Political lines cannot be drawn on a map anymore.

That is over.

It is a conservative vs liberal thing now. It could be your neighbor, or your co-worker. Or your sister, or even your wife that is your political opponent.

There are concentrations of them in all large cities, and those are the only places that matter, because it lets the electorate swing in the direction of them.

Based on the map "Yankeedom"

Mother's family came from Holland in 1657; father's family came for Ireland in 1847. All settled in the NY area.
far west, and happy to be here..
Our American neighbours can draw funny maps all they want, just leave us Canadians off of it please. A map like that is not helpful to any reasoned discussion about culture, it just draws lines between people.
Appalachia born, deep south raised, with some world travel and far north (pnw) thrown in for flavor.

Kind of fun to read this and think about it. I have lived in all the listed parts of the country and bin in all fifty states. I was born in Little Falls, NY. Moved to Dayton, OH when I was two and lived there for ten years to the day. Moved to Ballwin, MO when I was twelve and left there when I joined the Navy but I never found a place my heart would call home until I moved West.
Born in one part of Greater Appalachia, raised in another, and grateful for it.

A lot of people are ashamed of where they come from due to the collective behavior of a majority of the people now living there. These are the ones that usually attack or mealy-mouth something like this.

I'll say this to the audience in general, it has nothing to do with you Clark. This is just one dude's way of dividing up the country by cultural norms of given areas. Maybe there's something to it, maybe there's not. IMO it's not completely inaccurate. I'm not going to think about it long enough to determine whether I completely agree with it.
Lithuanian / German ancestry so Eastern European stock.
Parents emigrated as DP's to America and landed on the South side of Chicago in a neighborhood made up of similar people. Made a lot of friends with Irish, Italians, Poles and Slovaks besides.
I experienced the change of Chicago from old man Daley to the lesser Daley. There are many lessons to be learned there.
Now I am making my last stand in suburban Chicago and feeling a lot of kinship with that Indian who observed that the Government should put wheels on them so's to make it easier for them to be moved around. Got knows where my kids and grandkids will wind up. There doesn't seem to be much permanency where I'm at... And that sucks
Far West. Currently right below the "s" in the word "includes" but I've lived in Idaho and central Washington too.
Born in the middle of the midlands, then to the northern midlands, then to far west.

I am a Negro.
It's funny that somebody somewhere drew a map and labeled it with what he perceived as culture differences that people have. If I understand, this is where the majority of the people in these areas, ancestors came from.

Who was the person(s) that collected this data? What were their qualifications for doing this kind of research? Did they do a thorough search of where the people came from that lived in these areas? What were the questions they asked? (Surveys can say what you want them to, by the questions asked) What portion of the population did they question? The questions could go on, and on, and on!

This is just someones opinion, best guess, what they read somewhere, etc...

It really doesnt mean a thing!

Well beings that my father's family came from Hessian Soldiers that camped at Trenton and My mothers family were Irish immigrants that were raised in an orphan home in Philly that then moved to live on an ex slave farm in North Carolina and I now live in Wyoming. I would saw I am an AMERICAN!!!!!
Mennonite with ancestors traced through the Dakotas, Russia, Germany, and the Netherlands. I have a family history book that traces my lineage to the 1400's in Holland. Apparently there is a town there named after our family.

Also found out that my Great Grandfather's brother patented a version of four wheel drive in Canada and the US that was ripped off as the basis for modern front wheel drive. He got nothing for it as they got around his patent.
