I'm an infrequent poster here, and I hate to be the one to announce this.
It's with a very heavy heart that I inform you that our friend Roy Finn a.k.a. "RDFinn" passed away yesterday.
A friend of mine noticed "RIP Roy" messages on his Facebook page. He subsequently contacted his daughter, who confirmed Roy's death.
I know no details of what happened.
I never met Roy personally, but got to know him through his posts over at Optics Talk and to a lesser extent here. He and I did communicate quite a bit via email, as we had mutual tastes in guns, knives, and optics. The Roy I knew was a kind, thoughtful guy who loved his daughters very dearly. I wish I could have had the opportunity to know him better.
I will miss my friend.
Please keep Roy's family in your prayers.
Ted
OMG. RIP Roy. I can't believe this.
Too bad.
Liked the guy.
RIP
Sad to hear. Prayers for the family and friends.
Prayers sent for Roy, family, and friends.
He was a really good man. I'll miss him.
Very sorry to hear that. He was always a poster worth reading.
Damn, I truly hate to read that. We came that close to meeting up in Jersey one time but couldn't work it out. Had to be a heart attack.
Damn
Dang it, just dang it.
Roy was a friend and I'll miss him.
Karen and I will pray for his soul, light prayer candles for him and have a Mass celebrated for our friend Roy's soul.
Godspeed, old friend, godspeed.
Blessings,
Steve
RIP Roy you are a good friend I'll miss you. I hope you're at peace
This sucks. Godspeed, Roy, you were a good one and will be missed. Condolences to his family.
Damn. Just damn.
Godspeed campfire friend.
He was young, this is crazy.
Damn.
RIP Roy, the Campfire circle is less without your presence.
His last post was 6 days ago, anyone know what happened?
Good dude, liked his posts.
RIP
Had several dealings with Roy over the years, most here on the fire.
Roy was a class act. He will be missed
RIP Roy
The Fire lost another good one. Prayers for his family.
I really hate to hear of Roy's passing. May God bless him and his family. The campfire is less for his passing.
RD gone....not possible. Good guy and good father. I am going to miss him on here. Very sobering. He was a young guy.....
Dang, a good one lost,
May God rest his soul.
RIP RD, God Bless his friends and family.
Gunner
Damn, way too young! RIP, brother!
Prayers sent for the family.
Shocking news.
I always paid attention to his posts, they were substantive and interesting.
Man, he was young, way too young to be passing on.
He will be missed.
DF
Way too damned many notices like this around here lately.
RDFinn was a gentlemanly poster with genuinely useful info to share: rare on both counts.
RIP.
FC
Sorry to hear.
Always enjoyed his posts in the knife forum.
I never had any dealings with him but he always gave the impression of being a good guy. Sad news.
Condolences to his family and friends.
Dave.
Very sad to lose another good, fellow fire person. Prayers sent. miles
Sorry to hear this, enjoyed his posts especially around knives. Prayers for family and friends.
Really sorry to hear this... A good guy for sure.
He is now with so many "Campfire Brothers" who have passed sitting around the fire together stirring the ashes.
Doc
Sorry to hear of this. We really don't know how much time we have left, do we?
RIP, regards to the survivors.
Sycamore
I remember RD posting old pictures of his dad in uniform. Although I have never met those on the campfire that have left their earthly home, it still leaves a sadness and void when a kindred spirit leaves the fire for the last time.
God's peace to his family. RIP RDFinn...........
He was a real gentleman, and always willing to share his knowledge.
I will miss him.
John
RIP Roy I always liked his posts.
That's a shocker. I never met Roy personally but we got to know each other pretty well through e-mails over the years. My condolences to his family.
Wow that's sad to hear. Really terrible.
God-Speed to one of the good guys. I got to know him through Facebook. Heck of a nice guy who most certainly loved his family, guns and freedom.
Godspeed, Roy. Thoughts and prayers for those left behind.
Bigger than life I'd say. We are diminished.
Truly sad news... Prayers for his family.
I know he thought a lot of you, John. He used to email me excerpts from your articles and reference your opinions of gear in our email conversations. I too felt I knew him very well through email conversations, in spite of never having met him.
I extended an open invitation to him to come down and hunt with me, and he said he wanted to do so some day. I regret we were never able to make that hunt happen.
He and I had many conversations over emails about high end guns, knives, and optics. We had the same tastes in gear, it seems. As a result, I bought a nice custom knife from him a year ago that I cherish. He gave me the first opportunity to buy it from him because through our conversations, he knew I'd really appreciate it.
Damn, this hurts!
RifleDude;
Thanks for letting us know this sad news sir.
I too only knew him here, but had a few pleasant exchanges for sure.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends left behind.
RIP sir.
Dwayne
Yes Ted, I appreciate the news, albeit very, very sad news. He was a very generous and honest guy, no doubt, and one that will be surely missed around here. I know I will.
Prayers sent to the surviving family, and may God bring them peace. RIP RD.
RD and I spent many a message talking scopes and hunting.
Always looked forward to his posts on the optics board.
This is a sad day and I will miss him.
dave
One guy who's posts I'd pay attention to......
RIP RDFinn we are diminished without you.
Sad news for sure.
RIP Roy, prayers for your family. Not sure why you left us so early in your life. The Lord must of needed another good man.
Rest In Peace.
RIP Roy. He was one of good guys here and will be missed. Your family will be in our prayers.
Truly one of the good guys around here. We're losing way too many recently. When I respond to these it makes me feel a little guilty that I haven't made more of an effort to attend some of the get togethers. Makes me feel like I owe it to the Fire to go put a face with a name, shake a few hands, tell a few lies, and solidify some of the friendships I've made through this site.
Rest in Peace RD.
God just got a good one.
Way too soon...
Sorry to hear.
My first post on the fire was in response to one made by Roy. I never met him in person, but I felt like I knew him. We were both Steiner fans. He was always kind in deed and generous in thought. Roy was one of the best. He made me feel welcome. I really can't believe he's gone. I'm shocked. It's very strange never having met the man in person, but I am truly saddened and will miss him. He was thoughtful and considerate. I remember when deciding who I wanted to be out here on the internet, how I wanted to carry myself, I'd thought of Roy and his posts. He was the consummate gentleman. I'm really going to miss him. I doubt he knew how much his contribution was appreciated. I can't imagine how his family is taking this. I'm so sorry for their loss. Shocked. Good bye my friend, good bye.
Peace, Strength and the Grace of God to his family and friends.
Dale
RIP RDFinn. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
Damn. 57 is way too young. Condolences to his family.
RIP, RDFinn.
Damn, he was a nice guy.
Rest in peace
RIP Roy.
Condolences to the family...
Damm - lost another gentlemanly, thoughtful member!
RIP, RD - and prayers of condolence go out to all your survivors.
He will be missed. His posts were always full of knowledge and you could tell he was a stand up guy. RIP Roy.
RIP, RD
May God Bless and Keep you, and all who held you dear.
GTC
RIP RD. May God comfort your friends and family in this time.
Damn shame to go at that age. 57 is young.
Only 'knew' Roy from his posts here, but seemed like a good guy.
RIP.
I think he was the first person I ever bought a firearm off of on the 24. I remembered him having a sense of humor by saying my check bounced. RIP Roy.
Damn! I just saw this on Facebook myself. Just damn
Very shocking news and sad to hear. Condolences to his family and Godspeed to his soul.
Farewell and rest in peace RD - has been a pleasure to know you.
I'm at a loss for words that a good man still in his prime would be taken from us. He contributed unselfishly what he knew and from his life experience. We are diminished by his loss. Prayers for his family, RIP.
Damn,
Bad news for sure...
We seem to be losing a lot of good forum members here recently....
prayer and condolences for his family....
may he rest in Peace in the hands of the Lord...
Very sad. Condolences to his daughters.
Godspeed.
Wow! Roy was 1 year older than me. He was too young to leave. This board will noticeably suffer after loosing Roy. He had a knack for posting just the right thing at just the right time. I genuinely liked him, although we only knew one another through the Campfire. I will definitely pray for Roy and for his grieving family.
It's hard to accept.
Godspeed Roy. Prayers for his family
Keith
Roy was one of the good guys. Like so many others here I never met him personally just through email and private messages.
I bought so many knives from him that he finally just started emailing me when he was going to sell one. He really wasn't my wife's favorite person.
You will be missed Roy.
OMG. RIP Roy. I can't believe this.
Just saw this now.. Yeah, I recall his posts and had NO idea he'd passed..
RIP sir..
Sobering announcement.
a week ago he was posting about stout recoil.
Now were here.
Good bye Roy.
I wish his family peace.
Thanks for the notification. He was too young but death is the only thing we can be sure of. Sorry to hear it for him and his family. Prayers offered.
R.I.P. Roy
Thoughts and prayers for family and friends.
Too young, far too young. I hate to see it. Blessing to the family.
Sorry to hear this news. Prayers on the way.
RIP Roy
Mortality, it strikes another chilling blow on our community.
Love your family and friends while you have the chance.
I've conversed with Roy on and off over the past 6 yrs or so. Mostly at Optics Talk. This is just so unexpected. He's going to be missed for sure. To quote RifleDude(Ted)"Damn, this hurts!".
May God comfort all of those concerned.
Earl
Damn. RIP Roy. Condolences to your family.
Sad to hear, condolences to his family!
Mike
RifleDude: Thanks for sharing the sad news with us.
May he rest in peace.
Hold into the wind
VarmintGuy
Damn, I truly hate to read that. We came that close to meeting up in Jersey one time but couldn't work it out. Had to be a heart attack.
Damn
Spent a lot of time thinking about the above today (who would have believed it.....SH provoking deep thought).
I've met/travelled/hunted with some fine folks from the CF. If you'd have said that I'd have driven to NY to pick up a crazy Schenectady cop that I'd never met, then drive to Pulaski, VA to meet up with three other dudes I'd never met to continue driving to TN to kill pigs with a bunch of guys I'd never met......I'd have called you crazy.
As much bullchit arguing as we do here, I'd still hunt with most that I disagree with.
Again....RIP Roy. I regret that I never made the effort to meet that retired Motor from NJ.
I've only just read this terrible news and I am genuinely shocked. 57 is way too young to go..
Roy always struck me as a really decent person and my thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this very sad time...
rip brother i will truly be missed
Here is Roy's obituary and information about his funeral services:

RIP Finn, he Pmed me a lot about the 280 AI. May the hunting Heaven be good!
Wow, sad news indeed.
Rest well Roy.
Well damn, my condolences to his family and friends.
I enjoyed Mr. Finn. Had many wonderful exchanges with the man.
This saddens me. I wish I didn't open this thread as late as I have.
My sincere condolences to his family. Please know I respected him and very much enjoyed his camaraderie.
Very sad, Roy was way too young. He was a good fella.
I'm very sorry to hear this. RIP.
RIP Roy!! You will be truly missed.
Thank you Rifle Dude for taking the time to post this. Seems like there ain't a one of us here who didn't like and respect RDFinn.
Sad news indeed
Sad to hear the news. Roy, his family, and friends are in my prayers.
God Speed Sir...
Regards, Matt.
RIP
Enjoyed reading his posts a great deal.
I just saw this. Wasn't expecting this. I just bought a pair of binos from him before Christmas.
Damn, I really liked his posts. I'll miss his leupold zings.
Thoughtful, knowledgeable poster up here and in the knife forum...
