1000's of rounds, in a National Park? WTF ?
Why wouldn't NPS law enforcement have ammo?
Coming to a snowflake concentrated population center soon...
National park service
You should see a BLM ranger. He has the full swat look going on. A few years ago,it was reported, all the alphabet agency's were buying millions of rounds of ammo. Someone must have known where the NPS was storing some of theres.
At Crater Lake they gotta keep the heathens from piss'n in the Lake.
When you go on vacation and take a .22, how many rounds do you bring? Thousands isn't very many.
How much is thousands? One, two, three thousand? They probably have some handgun and rifle rounds, plus some shotgun rounds. Maybe even a brick of 22s. Thousands doesn't sound like much really. Hundreds of thousands might make me wonder though.
It's the f'n govt, it's probably hundreds of thousands of rounds.

National Parks have experienced and uptick in crime over the past years and the rangers have been trained and deputized to combat it; many are armed. A thousand rounds is the equivalent of 20 50 round boxes; I've got mere in my basement storage room. No big deal here.

Must be the country negros?

When a government agency orders anything they order in an economical quantity. Ordering 2 boxes of 50 rounds and then parceling them out among 50 rangers just doesn't make sense.

Except National Parks are generally in rural white areas; you should have said "Must be the country white rednecks?"
The rodents are taking over that dammed Lake!
Personally I'd think you should show us data proving an uptick of crime in national parks; and how arming park rangers has helped take a bite out of crime.
I know your a lifelong government employee, and government can't do any wrong; so explain who's idea it was to combat said crime with armed rangers, the training they receive, and the demographic and crimes of criminals.
Guns aren't allowed in NP's so how can they have crime? No guns, no crime, right?

Thats also the side djs is on
I believe firearms are allowed in National Parks. I had a rifle in my vehicle visible to the folks at the gate and entered Yellowstone several times.
I don't have a problem with them having guns in parks, there's crazies everywhere. But I should be able to as well.
I always figured those millions of rounds of govt HP ammo that was bought up years ago just got distributed around the country in case Billy Joe Redneck decided to have himself an uprising.

57 years ago when I worked in a National Park, crime of any kind was unheard of; now its commonplace. And, violent crime is in the rise.
http://abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=123679&page=1 Hence, the arming of rangers.
Also,

So some dimwits stole a couple cases of ammo from some other dimwits? Probably someone from the alt-NPS.

Guns are allowed in many National Parks now. see:
http://aliengearholsters.com/blog/concealed-carry-in-national-parks/When I worked in Glacier NP in 1960, I was on a grizzly bear attack rescue and on the following weekend, I bought a Ruger 44 Magnum Blackhawk in Kalispell and used it (illegally) to kill a grizzly that treed me 10 days later; I certainly had no bad dreams, I hiked out OK. Now it is legal to carry in many NP's.
If i recall correctly, it was 1.7 billion rounds purchased by homeland security for several alphabets, and a "preferential buying" (meaning .gov gets thiers first) that kicked off the ammo shortage in the first place, followed by panic buying, and hording, and scalping ammo as it did hit the shelves.
Cabela's has only just released box limits on ammo, and prices are still too high.
Times have changed — and so have the parks. While families camp and boat and enjoy the beautiful wilderness, park rangers are suiting up in camouflage to fight drug dealers, smugglers, and even, on occasion, terrorists.
Just as I suspected; democrats are responsible for crime in our parks.
If i recall correctly, it was 1.7 billion rounds purchased by homeland security for several alphabets,
and to top it off, it was ordered, making the ammunition manufacturer sit on it, but never paid for, as I understand it.
I wonder if it was lead free?
You know, practice makes perfect! While I don't live out west I believe meth labs and pot growing operations are quite prevalent! I guess you guys would like to send them on patrol with 30 rounds. A Pa. game warden was shot and killed not too long ago (working alone at night), there are a lot of criminals out there!

exactly what are the crime stats at Crater Lake National Park? The big question is WHY is this amount of ammunition needed there in the first place. Remember the discussions in the past about why the Park Service, the Education Department, the Energy Department, and others, were buying billions of rounds of ammo? We never got an answer

We never got an answer You won't get one about this either.
I'll bet real money it was an inside job..
yea I was going to post the same thing
the average bear isn't going to know they have it or where they keep it

Crater Lake has almost 500,000 visitors a year and 180,000+ acres. Can't imagine they're all good folks. If they stole the main stash of pistol, rifle and shotgun ammo for the park that "1000s" isn't much at all.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of scumbags.
The rodents are taking over that dammed Lake!
Good God man, is that Squirrelzilla?
I think I see houses clutched in his massive paws.
The horror!
Call for an air strike!
Could very well have been an inside job. Somebody obviously knew where it was, and how to get it. Leave a bunch of valuable stuff that's easily resellable someplace where the crooks can get to it and it's gonna vanish. Plain & simple; I bet there's a lot of handgun ammo in that heist. They could probably unload a lot of handgun ammo for a good buck in one of our gun free, socialist, democrat controlled, workers paradises where it's very difficult to buy ammo but there's a huge demand, like Chicago.

They are now but it sure wasn't the NPS's idea. Congress forced it on them.
Years ago, I picked up a hitch hiker, young kid about 22 or so. He was looking for work, so I got him a job on a farm , Close to Casper Wy. In our conversations he had been to Yellowstone Park , the year before , with a gang from CA. They were making a drug swap, in the park. He said it was the best place because the Rangers were not trained to look for drug deals. They met at a campground and did the trade, cash for drugs. Was an eye opener for me. Not saying we need swat in the NPS, but I bet we have them.

Even if they were trained to spot drugs, they wouldn't have the manpower to deal with it. They'd also be too far away from help who did to get it.

just how any rounds do you think the average park ranger will carry while on patrol?
yes there are pot grows in our forests and meth labs in our trailer parks, but we certainly don't have the corner on the market.
when i see our local forest ranger wandering around armed it just makes me feel soooooo safe and protected!
just one more layer of Big Brother we don't need.
They deal with the public, so anything goes.
I doubt a lot of people that venture all the way up in the Oregon mountains to Crater Lake are looking for trouble. It's probably 60 miles from Medford, the largest town in southern Oregon. All uphill driving into the mountains to get there, not much for a troublemaker to do with a lack of asphalt and sirens.
But, it's the public, and because of it's distance from law enforcement, I'd expect them to be armed. Especially today with terrorists walking into America every day. It's only a matter of when, not if.
A buddy of mine who was a State Trooper carried 41 rounds on him, 4 spare 8 round mags for a H&K P7M8 and a 8 round mag in the weapon and one in the tube. He had 4 boxes of 50 and extra mags ready to go in a brief case in his troop car. He also had a State issued AR and 870. He also had his own pistol grip 870 with plenty of ammo! He was a "I'd rather have it and not need it" guy! If there was a bank robbery or drug shoot out I bet he would go thru those 41 rounds pretty quickly. He practiced (required) a lot including night shoots and shooting left handed out the car window while going in reverse!
Obviously, since this theft took place within a National Park, there is crime there. If there had never been even one theft there before, crime there is now up by 100%.
Even NP rangers need to practice if they're going to carry. I'd bet that almost all the ammunition ANYbody buys is used for practice. (You shoot your deer rifle all year and down your buck with only one shot, right?)

Need to work on the math a little?
I've been going through, as opposed to around, national parks with arms for my entire life.
Absolutely! He's holding a motorhome full of retirees!
Just looks like popcorn from some angles. And if one looks close at ifubar's pictures, you can see a filthy hippy trying to piss in the lake! We need more Ranger to fight the heathens. I can't believe the antis posting here! This is serious!

Math was never my strong suit, RC. Given three math problems, I'll get half of them wrong.
