If I knew how to post pictures, I would. Been making holsters, knife sheaths and belts for some time now. Some really great info on YouTube to help. Don Gonzalez is my favorite. Great hobby and you can get as creative as you want.
Everybody I know that does leather tooling learned the craft in prison. My old foreman had "carpenters nail anything" with a topless chick tooled into his tool belt. Said he made it during his most recent stay.
Hmm, Years back I carved some decoy copies while waiting for the 706 diesel to start. No pictures. Then there is the birchbark moose call I made, ugly, but it might call a moose.
Built cat trees from scrap, a massive baseball diamond shaped shadow frame with diamonds at each corner holding various things, with real baseballs 3 old gloves, homemade american flag medals fake ivy and a picture of my grandfather in his neighborhood uniform, ive got a picture in A scrapbook is all thats left as it became a casualty of love affair gone south, was an azure blue color with red felt interior, rather proud of it, then a huge 18 hole purple martin house my family wrecked, mirror frames, lifesized, painted xmas silhouetted Peanuts lawn ornaments that got left at another chippys familys house, Designed, Routed and wood burned signs, Made stained glass windows from easy craft materials, Made home made bear bells to clip on pants out of scrap leather, and sleigh bellsw Home made silouette goose decoys
....so ya, in past ive dabbled in the creative arts. Basically whatever i could dream up,
"Im an idea man, Chuck". "Watch this....edible paper!"
Alwayswanted to work leather though, just as jimmer is doing. Punches can be expensive. Ive admired Kaywoodies possibles bags he creates from scratch as well.
Als not brave enugh to go after sharpening my own knives. Diff grinds and bevels, dont want them ruuunt.
Nice job shading the flower. The saddle maker I learned from, had me take a scrap and just do the carvings. He showed me how to tip the swivel knife and turn it with my finger and thumb. The start ,with the little curve makes the cut look best. Like anything takes time and some good pointers help.
I used to like putting scales on those old carbon steel Green River blanks and use em for gifts or barter but my old hands quit working somewhere along the way.
I made sheaths for em too but no fancy stamping like you're doing. They were serviceable though.
Jim nice work. When I was a kid Tandy the company that owned Radio Shack used to sell leather working tools and supplies. I had a wallet for many years i made and we worked on a few belts and key fobs. Good hobby for those miserable winter days.
You might inspire me to get back into the leather working. I've posted a pic or two before of the Apache "boots" I made and hunt in sometimes. Wallet I carry is a Tandy kit, probably 25 years old now. Have made a hat and a few other goodies too. For small projects I've picked up old "cowboy" style work boots (Wellingtons and such) for a coupla bucks at yard sales or second hand stores, the tops of them are usually in good repair and don't take much abuse over the years. Don't buy the ones that guys tuck their pants into though, those are usually covered in cowshit. Taken apart, the outside leather is good for stuff needing good thick leather, the inner liners can be used for little "possible" bags, jewelry bags, etc.
I might have to dig out the kit, never did get into all the tooling, mostly just the sewing. Something I can do while watching HOCKEY!
Going to keep my eye on this thread to see what else you come up with.
The saddle bags are a cool heirloom. Glad you could put them back into service.
One of many hobbies - Flint knapping - A quarter for scale
Ran off about 150 points this last fall. A shadow box to each family member for Christmas. Can dig the obsidian out of my back yard, so except for shipping, I was a cheap bastard this year.
Also fly tying/fishing, rod building, stock making, lots of hunting, and trailing along behind Cookie with her cameras, so a bit of photography if I happen to fall and a camera goes off. .
This thread is a good one! I really like to see what other campfire members are making.
This is a knife I made from an old crosscut saw blade and an elk antler. I started out making knives as a hobby years ago, went full time in 2002 with my brother working under the name "Twin Blades" and I am now trying to turn it back into a hobby.
I like to tie a few flies when needed, make a few basic knives (carbon steel stock removal) when time allows, a little wood work when momma needs something. Nothing fancy but it's fun to do.

Have a good one,
Please figure out how to make a fluted clovis and a Redstone
I build furniture. Everything from early 17th century to modern stuff. Chests, dressers, tables, desks, chairs. I use a mix of power and hand tools. Been doing it for the last 15 or so years. Been doing less of it recently, since I have taken up reloading and more shooting. Currently working on a cherry buffet for our dining room. I don't have any of my project pics on imgur, and can't add any on the work computer, otherwise I would post some.
Gooday, ya learning crafts can save a lot of money to. I've made, fold up buck saws, knives, leather work, snow dogs, mini bikes. Go karts, sleighs, barn board furniture, walking sticks from weird shaped sticks, hand tools, power tools, boats, toboggans, paddles, Christmas decor, to houses, decks, cupboards, but your lucky I can't post pictures or we would be here all day & although I can make all this stuff, I wouldn't compair to some on here. I always seem to hurry to much!!!! My next project is going to be, weaving a pack basket, & then bend wood into the shape much like a snow shoe for pack frame. Seeing all these things on here is good & gives ya new things to try!!!! I don't know about you guys, gals but I learned all this stuff years ago so I could have some of the same stuff other kids had. Anywooo I'm out. Bill. πΎπ£π¨π¦
Did you go to any special schooling or pick it up along the way?
Geno
Well took shop class in High School, but that was back in 1980-1983.
Pretty much learned by reading books, magazine articles, and most of all, simply giving it a try. Carving or dovetails are not that difficult. It is simply removing material in the right places.
Here is a Maloof style rocker I made a few years back
Here ya go Jim. Dont wanna take this one off the shelf. Posted these about 4 or 5 yrs ago. Wanna build a M1a2 someday in the near future All 100% hand painted. No spray gun. Need a fly tie rig with magnifying glass like I had when I put these all together a long long time ago. BORING 3rd tour in Korea on General staff for a year.
More pics to follow Havent figured out postimage really well yet.
