I'll use either the 300 win mag with 180gr. TSX @3050fps or the 270 winchester with 140gr. TSX.@3000fps

Any thoughts?

Airsoft???
I'd go with the 270, plenty capable of taking any of those animals and easy on the shoulder. Probably a little lighter rifle too.
I'd use the .270 Win. as the two primaries don't need the extra horsepower. 130gr Accubonds would be my choice unless 130gr. Partitions shot better. For elk, I'd have a stash of 150gr. Partitions with their downrange ballistics written down.
.270

300 win all the way. Why make a small hole when you can make a bigger one? More blood to follow, shorter blood trail to follow etc. Better chance of getting to the goodies if a less than perfect shot angle is presented. Another good choice, take them BOTH. Unless the hunt will be all at the same time on a horseback into backcountry type trip where the extra luggage to be packed in would not be smiled upon. If you take this route, you could drop down in bullet wieght and up in speed on the 270 projectiles since the Barnes bullets do not shed weight, thus momentum and penetrating ability like a lesser bullet would do. For my Pastor's 270 I load 120gr TTSX's for all game to be hunted including the occasional Elk. (He does not have and cannot afford a larger rifle for Elk and Bear etc)

Elk have been and will continue to be killed with 270's and similar, but are not the BEST choice, only an OK choice.

Terrific choice of bullets on both, BTW.
.270
300 win mag for sure, better elk killer

The .300 Win is a good cartridge but it would be the .270 for me. I'd drop down to the 130 gr. TSX. You can get another 200 fps or so out of it.
Choose whichever you'd like, its your fantasy...
Depends on which one you shoot best. Some don't like or can't shoot as well with,a 300 WM vs a 270.It happens....And sometimes the 300 will be a heavier rifle.

If the recoil and/or rifle weight of a 300 is too much, use a 270.There's no doubt the 300 is the more powerful rifle, but the name of the game is still get the rifle up the mountain and put a good bullet where it counts.

Damn Bob ... your game has such a long name ... now I know why "Chutes and Ladders" caught on so much faster wink But yours may be more fun ... mebbee "Find'em, Kill'em and Hump'em on out"??? Dat's still too long ... oh hell its late and I can't figure it out now.
avagadro:Well...the title of the thread is really long... grin

Let's try.."Find 'em;kill 'em"...........that better? smile
300 Win mag but I'd go with a 150 gr TSX or TTSX and maybe for elk I'd swap out for a 168 TSX. Deer ou don't need the power, and pronghorn it would be nice to have the flatter trajectory, and elk it would be nice to have a better penetrating round with flatter trajectory.

But like the man said, it's your fantasy -- just don't leave too much on the table.
270. the op said "possiblity of elk". to me that means maybe one elk hunt every 5 years, if then. so we're really talking deer and antelope, and most know the 270 win is a great deer/antelope cartridge, and can kill elk handily if one knows where to shoot and which bullets to use. ymmv.
I'm primarily a (mule)deer hunter and never feel overgunned shooting a 300, and certainly never feel undergunned shooting a 270 Win.

My two favorite rounds.
"Trak em, Whack em and Stak em"?
I'd use the 270 of the 2, because it's probably lighter.
Royce
270
For me it would depend on the environment and the potential for long shots. I practice a lot of LR shooting and would go with the 300 for that reason. If it was going to be mostly a timber hunt for the elk, I would not care one way or the other.

That being said, I have killed substantially more elk with a .270.

with a pellet gun you could double tap, hell you could even triple or quadrupal tap. You could tap as many times as you can pull the trigger and stay on target. That would essentually turn the pellet gun into a 300 win mag right?

Coming from you calling someone a troll doesn't mean much.
I would use the 270. Might load up 180 gr. for the elk if you thought 150 or 160 was lite.
.270 win with 130's for deer & lope and 150 Partitions for Elk.
270.
Because I own one.
Hi there, in response to heavywalker's statement about people calling each other trolls. Tom 264 and brooksrange like going back and forth calling each other trolls. I see it all the time on different forums and laugh at both of them. I'd go with the 300 only because I dispise the 270. Yes I'm a 30-06 lover no denying that.
.270 w/130gr bullets for Deer and Proghorn
.270 w/150gr bullets for elk
270
I would go with the 30 caliber. For you everyday setup and for mid-sized game, you could shoot a 150 grain pill. when you are headed for something a bit larger such as elk, you could jump to a 180 grainer.

In fact, I really like the 300 WSM, but I could replace my 7mm WSM and 325 WSM with one rifle.
270 is all you need for elk in my experience unless you want to shoot from very bad angles, even then it may work, haven't tried that.
If I could only take one, .300 it would be. I'm bad about taking 2 rifles and alternating.
Paintball gun?
with frozen paintballs
Ouch! they hurt. cry

Then maybe a cartridge with the letters NE in the suffix smile

Hey, I like that!

I'd encourage you to use the one that you're most comfy with and that will most likely be the 2.70. It'll be lighter and easier to carry and will bounce you around a bit less during practice.

One last thing, I'd forget the nonsense of taking a 130 for this and a 150 for that. Pick one bullet and stick with it and go forth and fill up an ark with it.

Dober
Either cartridge!.........Then it comes down to whichever rifle you like the best.

270 good medicine. Puts animals in deep sleep.
270, easier on the shoulder( more accurate) probably lighter

I agree completely with Mark, and either cartridge will work fine for the task at hand. For me, it would depend a lot on the terrain I would be hunting, the expected shooting distances, the odds of needing to shoot in gusty crosswinds, etc... for me, this would probably lead me towards the .300 mag.
A .270 Win. with 150 gr. Partitions at about 2930 fps. No need for more than 1 load. I've never had a need for a .30 cal. anything but I'm admittedly a .270 slut.
Bear in Fairbanks
.300 would make a real mess out of a pronghorn. 270 works fine for all, if you can shoot. If you can't hit em where you want to, stay on the porch.
Since you threw in elk I'd go with the .300..............547.
I have no opinion.

The 300 for me and it will not make a mess out of the speed goat either. Not with the X's.
Because your question indicated deer and pronghorn with the "possibility" for elk, I'd still go with the 270. Go with a high b.c. bullet for the deer sized game and step up to a premium 150gr for the elk.
However I believe the 300WM would be "better" but NOT if you can't shoot it as well as the 270. Clearly the 300WM is not needed for the deer sized game.
Let us know what you decided.
where on earth are you going to hunt all 3 on the same hunt? And why would it be "the possibility of elk" it either is an elk hunt or it aint...

Depending on where you are hunting I'd say it's unlikely you are going to be out on foot for the day & see both elk & pronghorn, elk & mule deer more likely but less likely you will be hunting all 3 on the same day on the same outing away from camp.

So bring em both.

Carry the 300 while you are elk hunting & may see a mulie.

Carry the 270 when you are pronghorn hunting & may se a mulie.

And if the focus is mulies which may take you high or low, here or there... Take the one that might best suit what else you might also expect to encounter.

Or just forget about the 270 & take the 300 because if you are hunting pronghorn, mulies and elk at the same time... You are probably hunting moose, brown bear, black bear, hogs, zebras, gators, caribou, platypus & bigfeets too.

Where, you ask?

As the photo points out, Montana for one. Our seasons run concurrent (for a couple weeks anyhow).

My antelope and deer rifle is always my elk rifle, but I haven't seen how it makes any difference if it's a 300 Mag or 270.

And, NO a 300 mag doesn't "make a real mess" of antelope any more than a 270, and depending on the bullet, perhaps less.
I don't see no platypus or bigfeets in that photo grin

I have hunted all three in Wy. With a .300 and with a 7RM. With a proper bullet, ie 200gr NP, the .300 doesn't make a mess of a goat. In fact, I doubt the wound channel looks too much different than a .270.
A nice 150g Nosler scooting out of a 270 at close to 3000 fps will drop any elk in existence as long as you hit him right. That includes quartering shots, broadside and frontal, plenty of expansion and penetration. I don't take "Texas Heart Shots" I will shoot them in the back of the neck on the run though ... The 150g Nosler will open up nicely on deer and antelope too ...

Well said Mac!

I have to agree with colorado's statement about the 270. It'll kill elk efficiently with a 150gr. Partition. I like lightweight rifles for western hunting. There's a lot more lightweight 270's than 300's.
Well I would take the 270, light rifle can be made. I was never much of a 300 Win Mag Fan, I shot a 300 Weatherby for a time. Now If I need more I just shoot a 338 Winnie. Some good 130 gr bullets in the 270 would be all you would need. Some 270's I have had shot 130's better than the 140's never bothered with 150 gr bullets in the 270 since the 130's did fine to better than fine, for me. There are just a bunch of very good bullets now a days, Its become such a moot point, I don't even know why I even posted on this one other than is a Wet rainy Saturday and I am bored. 270 280 30-06 they all pretty much do the job, and you would have a hard time telling the difference in the field. Same goes for 7mm RM , 300's and 338's on the game mentioned. Bigger stuff maybe then again maybe only on the internet.
300 Win 150gr E Tip.

its vica versa
Boy, I wish I had your problem! I'd go .270 as well and stick to the 140gr Accubond for it all.
A 7 mag, splitting the bullet weight and ballistics of both, maybe even gun weight if its short mag; start off with a 140 TSX, then a 175 Party, then a 162 A-Max.

Cause some people just make this schit harder than it needs to be!
I like Hawk's answer....the 7 Mag solution grin

But the truth is a guy who can shoot will do fine with any of them....and a guy who can't shoot is not gonna be happy with any of them either.....
Me too! All three.

best post in this thread....I agree with both points.....a .284" 160 at 3000 covers a lot of bases.....
300 win Mag !!! It does everything and will takedown any animal in North America.

Dino
Would be the 270 for me because I don't use a mag anything.
Both are great rounds & it really boils down to personal preference for the round or preference for a particular rifle.

I've killed elk & moose both with the 270 & it ain't even a marginal caliber for either, IMO.

I don't like a heavy rifle when not really needed for a heavy caliber, so w/o a doubt, I'd take the 270.

Out to 500 yards, the trajectory of the 2 rounds is close enough to say no real difference, tho the energy edge certainly goes to the 300, but I know the 270 will cleanly kill elk at that range, as I've done it.

As the range passes 500 yards, the 300 becomes more attractive, it you can/plan to shoot at those ranges.

The package that the 270 generally comes in is way more attractive to me from a weight & carrying standpoint than any extra punch the 300 gives for the animals to be hunted.

brooksrange, both are good choices with bullets listed, I'd probably lean a little more toward the .300 WM. memtb

Best to use your 270 Winchester.
Have both, serious hunts, the .300 everytime!

No question - the .270Win..
.222AI.
I have a done the same combo hunt for deer, lope, and elk with a 300 WBY shooting 180 NABs at 3180 fps and loved it. A bit much for lope but ended up shooting mine at 400+ yards with a strong wind so my choice was not terrible. Worked great on the deer and elk too.

Always a .300 Win for Me......I love this cartridge for all around use, all My big game rifles are chambered in .300 Win.......Good luck.......Hb
For me, when I am away from home on a hunt, the 300 wm Howa ss in a McMillan sako classic gets to go every time. It shoots a 150 gr ttsx at 3300 fps into 3/4" for three and is easy to shoot. I can shoot about as far as I should before I have to worry about holdover, and the 150 gr ttsx hasn't had a problem punching through elk or aoudad at 350 yards.
My 300 Win mag is seeing more action this fall than previous hunting seasons; I'm going into areas with combo deer/elk.
300 Win mag.
.270. Covers the primary game hunted and plenty for elk when/if it happens.
I like my .270.. More and more it rides in the truck with me, but I love my .300.. On a serious big game hunt, I don't leave home without it..
223 for everything. I personally got tired of burning more than 25gr of powder per shot. If you end up with a raking shot on a big bull, aim for the nuts.
No doubt, the .270

The .300 is overkill on 2 out of 3

I have done a mixed bag hunt just like you are asking 3-4 times and took a .300 WBY on all of them. Obviously, more power than needed but was glad to have a gun I trusted (the most important part) for long, windy shots. Could I have taken a 270 and had equal results? Probably, but I don't own a 270 that I trust but my 300 worked to perfection.

I am going on a similar hunt in two weeks, plus with a bear tag in my pocket. I am going take a 300 for sure but a 257 WBY is tagging along because I have room, which will be used on some of them, if wanted.

Bottom line, take the gun you are most comfortable with.
Won't matter....

I'm in a similar boat but a little diff.

I do have a 270 W I like/trust/& am comfortable using.

I also have a Black Shadow 300 WM that I like/trust & enjoy hunting it TOO.

I would take BOTH and maybe hunt BOTH.

So maybe I'm NO help to the ??

Jerry
30.06 or 308 win.
Both great calibers, there is a good chance you can shoot one of them best from field positions. Unless they have matching scopes, you may like one more than the other.
Sounds like it will be a good hunt.

Proof that nothing changes. Since we've already surpassed irrelevance, I'll add that I'm taking a 338 Fed shooting 180 Accubonds at ~2775 for Elk and Mulies.
I always have two on a hunt. I've dropped mine before.
270 because I'm too much of a puzzy to shoot a 300 Win.
300 win mag and 168 TTSX.
.270 just because. There is literally nothing in NA that i wouldnt hunt with my .270. Second coice would be a 30.06, just because. However, since .270 and .300 were the choices.. >The 270 wins...See what I did there?

300 win mag because I have one.
No doubt a 270
I hunt these three EVERY YEAR... If I wanted to make the most of all my chances, no doubt the .300, if you shoot it well.. I like my .270 more each season, but for serious hunting .300..
My answer to the OP's question: Both... I am taking a 7.0lb .270Win (130gr NAB's) and an 8.5lb .300H&H (200gr NAB's) to Colorado for elk in 3 weeks...
270 WSM would be good!!
I would use a 270 and not look back
I don't get to do any hunting anymore but if I were going for any of the listed critters, it would be the .270. I have an old neighbor who hunted for years with a .270. If it was good for Fred Kilgore, it's good for me.
kwg
Surely not the 300.
This thread should not be....."Which rifle would you use"
It should be...."Which rifle DID you use"

Thank you very much ☺

Trystan
I'd use my .270 with 150 Partitions for all of the above. I really like my .300s, but enjoy carrying the .270 much more.
I would use what would work great for 90% of what I was hunting and let the 10% sort itself out. For what the OP says he will hunt seems the 270 will work very well.
6.5 creedmoor LOL. Use what you like and shoot best.
I have stock Model 70 rifles (soon to be custom) and have shot the 270 Win. cartridge extensively in the past few years and would not hesitate to it on Elk. This said, I'll be using my .300 Win Mag as an experiment for Elk this fall. This cartridge is more versatile (albeit generally heavier recoil, heavier rifle) for larger big game. I look forward to seeing how this plays out.
270...no question about it.
Is this now the fourth resurrection of this thread? I never answered it before but I'd go .300 mag.
I don't think I've answered here before and I'm not going thru 11 pages to find out.

I'd pick 1 of these 2

[Linked Image]

Right -- Tikka T 3 Lite SS 270, Weight 7 lbs 6 oz

Left -- Tikka T 3X Lite SS 7mm RM, Weight 7 lbs. 9 oz.

Either will work, I probably would take the 7 RM.

Jerry
270, and no I'm not gay.
Use a 30-06
No need for the other two--
Funny seeing the same old questions get answered.....

Is the OP even around? Would love to know what panned out. I'd guess like everything else. Boots sprung a leak, transmission went out on the truck, had the flu.......or my favorite, animal shot at 35 yards.

I've done it with the 300WM, .280AI and 30-06. I much prefer a lighter Sporter in a standard caliber for an all around now. Exception would be my lighter weight Mod 77 338WM. In that case I'd use the Barnes or Nosler 185TTSX or 180/200 Noslers.
But I feel most everyone shoots a .270 a lot better than the 300WM, great as it is, they can be a handful.
