A 1957 .270 fwt I've had for a while...then an old blank found on ebay that had been partially inletted, shaped and pillar bedded for just such a rifle, so I bought it on the cheap. I messed with it a little over the summer but realized that it belonged in the hands of a stock maker not just a woodworker, enter Jim Kobe. He added a steel grip cap, proper pad, talley inletted swivel studs, william 1pcs BM and lots of wood removal and shaping... then Jim floated and bedded the barreled action, put a finish on it and did a beautiful job of checkering. Now I'll top it with a leupy 4x and get to work. He created the rifle I've dreamed of for years.
Like a father holding his new born child, I could look at this rifle for days on end.

Very nice..
Gorgeous!
Wow!
sweeeeeeet rig!!!!!!!!
I want to like you, but you're making it difficult. If I see another beautiful Winchester of yours posted I'm going to poke my eyes out.

Please post just ONE picuture of a Mossberg or Stevens or something.
Oh that is magnificent. Congratuations to you and high compliments to the stockmaker. Of course the wood is spectacular and I go for that for sure.

In addition the stock work and its fine touches and edges are special. The checkering is conservative, as I like it, but first it's great art.

Well that is the gun alot of us have dreamed of.
Oh my.

That is beautiful. You'll be hard pressed to find a nicer one. I love the recoil pad.

That may be the nicest rifle I've seen - the stock on that is just awesome. Like you said- its hard not to just look at that rifle and smile:)

Jim Kobe does turn out some fine looking stocks, doesn't he?
Yeah. That's nice.
WOW !!! A beautiful rifle.
Randy,

great rifle. i for one am happy you have deceided to top it with a 4x Leupold. A 3x might have looked good as well.

smile
Very Nice.....Awesome grain in that stock. You did Well!
Beautiful stock!
Agree with all above - simply beautiful!
Could I be so bold to ask about what the stock cost to have done ? I have my dad's pre-64 .270 Featherweight and the original stock that he tried to refinish many years ago but failed at it.I'd consider having the same done as your as long as I didn't have to take out a secong mortgage.
Well done, you did good.
Great wood. Never could understand plastic.
It is drop dead gorgeous!!
SCHWING!!!
lordy, lordy Handwerk!!!! Wooo! Nice!!
WOW!

RH
Wow is right! Quite a beauty. Now, I'd have a hard time taking it on a hunting trip.
Your rifle belongs on the front cover of the Leopold catalog.

A work of art.

Doc
I think even Mr. O'connor would have been happy to own something like that. A straight 4x (old style) Leupy would be just right too. A classic rig all around. Well done!
Outstanding!
That is some high class porn. Good gracious, what a beautiful piece. Very artistic.
Nice!

That's a beaut, Clark!
good golly miss molly....

congrats on finding that piece of timber, and hats off to the fellow that made it into such a beauty.

Now THAT is what I'm TALKIN 'bout!

Exceptionally well done. A terrific rifle in every respect, I would not change one thing about it. Now, go kill some stuff with it!
DAMN, I would love one just like that!

at my place.
Randy, that project turned out well!

A 1957 M70 270WCF with an awesome looking wood stock doesn't suck....(grin)

Looking forward to hearing how it shoots.

As Classic a .270 as I've ever seen! Beautiful work, great lines and utilitarian. A man could do great things with a nice rifle like that! Congrats !!

You're dang right! I'd take it hunting too. That's what rifles are for. I never really appreciate a good rifle until I've taken game with it. If it isn't good for that, what good is it?

That is one of the prettiest rifles I have ever seen. Congratulations!

As Savage99 told me.

Please take down the softcore porno pictures

thank you.

Jack O'Connor, Jim Carmichel, Craig Boddington, our own JB, and many others take their pretty rifles hunting. I have a couple pretty ones that go out regularly, too. That's what makes 'em really special.
Congrats!! to you and Jim...damn that's nice.
That's a nice looking (great looking) classic rifle. I like the addition of the bottom metal, sling swivels . Hell I like all of it!!!!
and yep, I'd hunt with it.
Perdy nice, Randy. I'll take it to TX in Feb. and kill some hogs with it. I'll even lay it on one and take a picture. grin

I'm jealous...
Really beautiful. What's it weigh sans scope?
Folks, thanks for the many kind words,I was away from the rifle for over 12 hours today and it hurt... To answer a couple questions, yes it will get hunted, perhaps not on a float hunt on the Mulchatna river but certainly time in the woods/mountains every year. I only had time to mount the 4x leupy and shoot a couple 100yd groups w/factory 140 accubonds around 1"-1 1/4" or so, plenty of promise for even better, I suspect. With all that figure in the butt it's not a flyweight, scoped it's pushing 8+ lbs, a trade-off I can live with. It balances and feels wonderful. I must say between Lee and Jim we're blessed with a couple of great smiths here on the campfire and I feel very lucky to have worked with both of them. Jim poured his heart into this stock even knowing I only had a small budget for him to work with, above and beyond you could safely say. I do hunt and enjoy my sythetic stocked rifles, but a wood stocked rifle like this gets me a whole different kind of jazzed.
I want to have everyone look at this magnificent stock again. Gunsmith Jim Kobe has created a fine work of art. Its not only great art but a functional rifle. Just look up at the top of the picture at the neat extra wood that covers the bolt release.

Look at the extra, but just perfect zags to the checkering pattern. There is far more to this work. What a pleasure just to comment on the rifle. Congratulations to you both.

handwerk: Well they ARE different.... smile

They may lack the true utility of a synthetic when it comes to really rough going;may weigh a smidge more...but,anyone doubting their field-worthiness need look no further than the 30/06 and 7x57 carried all over the world by Eleanor O'Coonor,Jack's pair of 270's that helped account for game from NA to India;or Page's "Old Betsy" Mashburn that traveled the world

..... what I've found with them is that,if crafted by someone who knows his onions,no BG rifles I've picked up have the unique balance and handling qualities of a finely crafted wood stocked rifle....there is something about the balance and construction that just makes them feel "right",and they "fit" to a "T".

I love my synthetics but if reduced to just one BG rifle it would have to be something like what Randy has there....lovely rifle, worthy field companion....very nicely done!Enjoy!
Well,I guess with all the hype,I'm sure it has driven up the price!!LOL
You have my standing off of $50....or I have a table at my house it can sit on...Or it could ride in my truck everyday,in case something needs to have a "red mist" around it.....
HUNT THAT PUPPY AND ENJOY!!
Any info on how the finish was applied? That looks great by the way.
Ex, Sorry I don't know much about the finish, other than I really like the look and feel of it and I suspect there might be more than one coat(g) on there. Try Jim, he might let out his secret?
A beauty indeed!
what a gorgeous rifle! I hope to have one like it some day. looking forward to a pic with your first game animal shot with it.
I just went from 6 to midnight.
Marty, glad it moved you...he, he, I get to see it every day..... ha!
I also appreciate all of the compliments. I just returned from the ACGG expo in Reno where I was inducted into the ACGG Guild as a full member. It was quite a humbling experience. Thanks to all.

Jim
might there be a pic. of that stock as a blank befor shaping?
Damn fine rifle, Randy; as an old friend of mine used to say, "that's just plain old wicked fine............."
