With all of the talk about all of the 'modern' calibers, actions, scopes and the like. And, in honor of 'Throw-back-Thursday'. How about a thread on some of the OLDer guns you have in your stable?
My oldest is my Grandfather's Win 94. 22" Octagonal Barrel, Williams tang peep. Some of the old-timers in Lemhi County would tell me when I was a kid that this rifle took the last grizzly bear ever taken in the county. I know my Grandfather used it to keep my Dad and his brothers and my Grandmother in meat for quite a number of years.
I still hunt with it.
According to Winchester, the rifle was produced in 1906.
So, what's YOUR oldest rifle/firearm??
1952 model 99
Belgian made underlever side by side shotgun. I think it came across the plains with my family before the gold rush.
Most of my rifles are probably 25 years old but I have a 60s vintage remington 22 and a JC Higgins 22 about the same vintage. I have a early 60s vintage savage 110 30-06 I picked up here on the fire last year. I took it out in deer season but the deer must have gotten the word and failed to show up.
My oldest is my Grandfathers Uncles Marlin M94, 25-20WCF made in 1906. Next is the M99R Savage in 250-3000 that was built in 1953, same as me( well technically I was made in '52 since I was born in January '53). Then comes the early 60s Husky HVA actioned JC Higgins 51L in 308. Theres the Rem 582 22RF I bought around'67, and the ol'270, M700BDL I picked up in '72. The rest are too new to vote!
My current oldest is an M70 375 H&H made in 1948. It is a fine rifle in every respect.
Also have an old Savage M219 30-30, but not sure of its age. It is likewise a fine rifle.
Have owned several Savage 99s made in the '20s. They are very fine rifles too, and shoot extremely well.
Shot my first 25-straight with my dad's model 12 field grade. My brother has it now.
great like about the old ones .My oldest is a double shot gun 12 ga. 1920s or so
My main hunting rifle is a 1937 Win model 70 in 30 Gov't 06 caliber. It wears a Leupold VX-1 2-7 variable in Medium height Leupold QRW rings. The front bases is a steel Weaver and the rear base is a modified aluminum Weaver. The rear bridge was drilled for Unertl bases back in the day, the bolt handle was severely ground for clearance, and the left side was drilled for a sidemount but has since been welded up. I have a Williams Fire Sight mounted up front and a folding Marbles in the rear on it.
My next favorite is my 1957 model 70 in 257 Roberts. It is pretty nice but the stock is a bit shorter than standard with a pad added. It shoots factory 117 Win+P PowerPoints very well as well as my own 117 PowerPoints loaded to 2665 FPS, which is about 200 FPS slower than the book on the factory loads. I do no know the actual velocity of the factories though. I shoot PowerPoints through this gun because it has the shorter magazine and would have to very deeply seat spritzers to fit in there anyway.
My favorite 22 is a BSA Martini Model 12, made sometime between 1912 and 1921. Still going strong and as accurate as anything I've shot including Anschutz and other target rifles.
1913 1899A .303SAV
Oldest one I've killed with, 91 years old.
The old 99's are getting some attention.
Granddad's 94 Win in 32 Spl dates to 1922 I think. We also have his Model 12 pump in 16 gauge with the 2 9/16 chamber and a Stevens Favorite in 32 long rimfire but I've no idea on the age of it.
Personally, my oldest is a Ruger 77 from 1977.
Dale
1906 Winchester
Well now y'all have gone and done it. <G>
My memory is taxed to the limit. I'll have to look and see what else but.....
I have my Grandpa's '97 (1897) that is.....
And his Model 12, (1912).
One is a 16ga, ???
I also have my Dads Model 50, Win. 3 shot, semi auto. 12 ga.
I'm not sure what else I have stowed away, I'll have to check.
My first 'gun' is a JC Higgins bolt action 410 w/tubular mag. Still have it.
Mine aren't old, just very experienced
How about a 1920 Savage in 250-3000?
3 US Model 1917 Enfields. 1 Remmy and 2 Eddystones. All sporters.
Manufacture date 1918.
Remington model 12 22 rifle. My fathers first gun. Bought it for 2 bucks when he was 12. That would make it 80 years old.
Remington 1 1/2 rolling block, .32-20. 1880's and would probably still shoot if I could see the sights.
1894 25-35 takedown rifle...
1876 45-75...
1886 40-65...
Original 1874 Sharps in 40-90 Bottleneck...
My primary deer rifle is a Marlin 336 .30-30 made in 1953. It is my favorie and I am not sure how you can improve much on the design when hunint the N.C. mountains.
1914-vintage .303 savage. Soon to be usurped by an 1896 Krag sporter.
The oldest rifle I ever used deer hunting, strictly speaking, was my 200 year old N.Beyer Pennsylvania long rifle, family heirloom, .48 caliber flintlock that I loaded and fired at a deer in the field behind the house on the event of my 40th birthday more than a few years ago. Luckily I missed, as deer season was over, and yes there was a little alcohol involved. It was the one and only time I ever fired that gun.
Everything I own is old. And prolly close to being worn out. I suppose the oldest rifle I regularly hunt with is this '98 Krag, 1901 variant.
Several highly sporterized former war trophy Mausers with new wood, barrels etc. so I consider them to be 'modern' rifles in every respect now. I have had older, but my oldest right now is also a gun I have owned since 1973 (My 13th birthday) and it is on its third stock and third barrel. It is a Remington 1917 Action, much tweaked and upgraded. It took my biggest ever black bear from 350 yards out last fall, then was toted by a kid from our church during elk season and he managed to simaultneouly take a bull elk and aquire his first "Magnum Eyebrow" cut
I shot my first deer with it when I was 14 and it was still a 30/06. Some years later, with a fresh upgrade to 300WBY I bagged my first Bear and Elk with it. Its barrel for the last 20 years, and probably for ever more, is a 338 wildcat that is the 8mm RemMAg necked up with no other changes. VERY deadly round and rifle:
The bear:
So deadly, that bear needed killing a day after being shot by it.
1876 deluxe in 40-60...
Model 1912.. Manufactured 1914
Just a little older than Shrapnel..
Model 1912.. Manufactured 1914
Just a little older than Shrapnel..
And better looking too
Oldest in the collection is a Savage 1899, dated Feb.1899.
Oldest that has killed is a the Savage Model 20, dated 1927.
I like the looks of older guns, but evidently I've gotten used to
the newer shape of rifle stocks. I purchased a pre '64 model 70 Winchester and a beautiful early Savage 99 with the brass rotary magazine.
The stock in both of these beautiful old rifles were designed for iron sights with a lot of drop at the heel. They kick upwards about as much as the kick back, and with my face planted high on the stock for scope use, they bashed my jaw and teeth when firing, had to give them up and no longer own either.
I have a 5 digit serial number 99 Savage that I have killed deer with. I put a .22 HP liner in it. Does it still count? Sorry, no digital camera.
George Daw cartridge firing shotgun, built in the 1860's killing birds for over 150 years...
Minute of squirrel head to 50 yards
Just today I bought a new oldest rifle. It is a Sempert Krieghoff drilling made in 1944. Cartridges are 16ga and 7x57R. It is in almost 100% condition, and I am pleased as all get out!
A few of my eldest:
1941 Winchester 71 .348 WCF
1929 Savage 99 .303 Sav
1943 Husqvarna 46A 9.3x57
1896 Krag, which has been in my family a long time. Gave it to an uncle, who killed his first deer with it many moons ago.
This original High Wall, circa 1900, took a large sow last year. It was rebarreled at some point in its life, and became a .45-90 carbine.
More old crap. But it's the kinda crap I like.
The Krag was an interesting, and well made action. One of these days I'd like to acquire a nice sporter, like the one you have up top.
Thanks Patrick! I do like them! They are just cool!
This one began life in 1917 and later had a facelift but, I don't know when. If you look carefully a slot has been cut in the receiver for the Petersen device making this a Springfield 1903 Mark 1. The 20 1/4" barrel makes this a very handy rifle for woods use.
More old crap. But it's the kinda crap I like.
kaywoodie, I really like that sporter on top!
I've shown these pics a few times, but once more won't hurt:
Unknown year Springfield 1898 Krag:
Next oldest is a 1917 .303 Savage
Don't know they year, but my Ithica 16 gauge I suspect is from the 30s:
I also have a 1912 Sav 1899 in .22 HP, but have only killed bunnies with it so far. I have several rifles from the 30s and 40s too, but they're not really "old" yet...
This Mauser receiver was made in 1897, stamped on the left side of the receiver. I believe its a 95 pattern but purely a sporting variant, one of the ones made in Berlin and exported to Orange Free State.
Its a 308 and I have been using it since 1984 at the age of 13. The barrel was a take off from a target rifle and I have put probably 8000 rounds through it. Still groups 10 shots under 1.5 inches at 100y!
And this is my trusty 303. My Dad used to use this when he was a commercial fisherman to shoot sharks when they were hooked and ready to be pulled into the boat!
I use it on much more sedate game such as feral pigs and goats. Seems to work pretty well. Its a No1MkIII made at Lithgow in 1944.
1913 1899A .303SAV
That just scream class!
'49 Winchester M64 in .32 Special.
Bob
Although I have some great "modernized" pre 64 M70's I still enjoy hunting my classy old original model 70's.
Original Sharps shipped in 1877 to the buffalo fields of Montana...
At least you kicked the salt block outta the picture.
Don't forget how I won that bet when you thought I couldn't skip just one bullet through that herd...
The two oldest rifles that I have hunted and taken deer with are; Winchester made 1917 Enfield in 30-06 (made 1918) and a Marlin 336 in 30-30 (made in 1949). Both rifles were my maternal Grandfather's.
My two oldest are rimfires,1920s vintage Remington M24 gallery gun, and a Stevens 86D bolt-action tube-fed rifle. Both will still shoot as good as my eyes will let me shoot iron sights.
My grand dad's Parker 28ga. shotgun from about 1918....
I'll jump on the 1899 Savage bandwagon.
Black Bear, Alaska; Winchester 1876 45-75...
my oldest is a 1890 model Winchester built in 1906. had a 1873 Winchester 32-20 made in 1882 but let it get away.
the 1890 is 22wrf and still shoots 2 " at 100 yards. amazing little rifle.
ah! I forgot the 1725 matchlock Japanese. haven't worked up the nerve to shoot it as it is a masterpiece of art.

Those two Mausers are pretty special with or without the family heirloom angle that make them all special. Nice stash of guns and history.
The Krag was an interesting, and well made action. One of these days I'd like to acquire a nice sporter, like the one you have up top.
Like this original Gerorge Gibbs beside a 86T/D
some intricate engraveing done in Germany way back when!

How about a 1920 Savage in 250-3000?
Larry Koller special.
Savage 1899H in 22 High Power.
YOM is 1916
Whitney Kennedy 45-60 saddle ring carbine. Quite rare but still a gopher killing machine...
Full camo to shoot gophers.. Did that poor dirt rat die of embarrassment?
He died on the way to a Lacrosse tournament...
I almost nailed one on Kagy! Almost clipped a couple of students on the sidewalk, but I'm sure they understood my actions.. I think that was a thumbs-up one of them gave me.
Shrapnel,
You've got an enviable stock of cool old iron. Bet you didn't buy them all the same year.
Seriously -- nice rifles.
Curiously enough, both of the oldest rifles to go hunting with me are 1915 manufactured Winchesters in .303. One's a 95, the other a P14.
