As you may or may not know, Howa is making a Mini these days.
A Vixen it is not. But full UBER it is.
This is the #2 and 22" version.
Trigger is a two stage and required no adjusting. It's downright UBER.
2.3 is about the max you can get for COL out of the 10 round mag. You can touch lands with the 50gr. V-Max and the 60gr. V-Max in my rifle.
60's shot great, 75gr. BTHP shot great, 50's were UBE, 75gr. V-Max was... horrid. I have only used CFE223, Lapua brass, and the 7 1/2 at this point. Stuck with the 60's because I have 500 or so of them and wanted to try them on dogs.
One of our own (MtnBoomer) slimmed this stock down for me.
Holy freakin' UBER compared to the initial handle. The Mini action is great. The barrel contour is great. The trigger is great. The handle is NOT proportioned to the rest of the gun from the factory.
I ended up having to decide what scope I wanted to ride on this. Low weight was sorta the goal. And I love the idea of a 10 round mini-carbine twisted 1-9".
So with that I threw a Leupold 1-4X on top and so far so good.
Take a few more ounces off this since MtnBoomer removed material. We're not in Kimber MT range, but when you consider this is a $329 starter kit, you can look past that.
Looks good Travis, these Howa 1500s have my interest, but now I may need to look into these minis. I would like to pick up a 223 that I could later upgrade and rebarrel. So I have a few questions:
How did MtnBoomer go about shaving down the handle?
Would these actions be considered nice enough to rebarrell down the road?
The mini would require a different inlet than stnd 1500 S/A, No?
Are you considering threading yours for a can, or is the bbl too thin?
How did MtnBoomer go about shaving down the handle?
No idea. I just let artists work.
Quote
Would these actions be considered nice enough to rebarrell down the road?
Absolutely. They are very solid and finished well.
Quote

Yes. McMillan does not currently inlet for the Mini. If you purchase 50, they will make a mold. If you buy 100, you will have exclusive rights to the inlet. I thought about this, but got drunk instead.
Quote

I have no doubt they could be threaded but I will probably leave this one as is. Although I may hacksaw the barrel to 19".

MtnBoomer fixed all that.
Huge improvement looks-wise. Any effect on fore end stiffness?
How loud is the safety, think it'd be an issue if the truck was just idling?
I'm more concerned about the protruding magazine, it could bump the horn while you are trying to get the rifle shoved out the window. It also lacks a slot in the forearm to lock onto the top of your window glass. Apparently, Howa's engineers have no practical experience with truck guns.

The detachable mag box is not the most bestest thought out design ever. But it is very functional and I have had zero issues with feeding, extracting, ejecting.
They'd be smart to start shipping them with both standard bottom metal and the DBM.

Ditto.
Also notable, the long, ultra sensitive, mag release lever has made it too easy to stroke unintentionally and drop the mag prematurely.
Travis, check out the night hunting videos on the Fieldsports Channel on Youtube. Those boys got it goin' on. Night vision, "moderators", through-the-scope video, the works. For a place that is so anti-, Britain's got some serious killing going on.
Their little suvs have all kinds of elecronical crap hanging out the top. Must be some serious cash involved as everything there costs an arm and a leg by our standard.
Someone said 7.62x39? I do like the sound of that. Been looking for a decent rifle in that caliber that I don't care if it gets banged up a little in the truck. don't want to do that to the a 700$ cz. I have two 223s. a howa 1500 stainless hogue stock and a t3. Think one (howa) is going to go, to get the. 7.62x39 if they come out.
I'm begging them to add 6x45 and 6.8 SPC II. They've told me to GFM so far...
What about a .35 Grendal for us Hoosiers? I'm guessing it would get the same answer.
On to a more realistic question, what about lefty's? A sponsored TV personality shared that they were hoping to have LH rifles out in 2016. Are you hearing the same?

Pappy,
I would check that out but unfortunately, I despise foreigners and anything they do with their time.

You know, all this sucking of cock talk would likely get you scolded from the PRK (again), if said scolder actually hunted, shot, owned rifles, etc., and looked into forums about those things.

Easily the finest application of masking tape I've seen today. Masterful. You should share your talent with the world on Youtube."Travis' Tape Tips"
How loud is the safety, think it'd be an issue if the truck was just idling?
More importantly, how accurate will you be?
That depends on how well the truck is tuned. A rough idling truck is definitely an impediment to accuracy, but so is having a lardass passenger squirming around while you're trying to squeeze off a shot.
Cool rifle, Travis. Are you going to paint it so that it blends in with your truck/window/beer can?
Working on a Budweiser/Big Sky theme currently. Travis
"Urban Camo." Otherwise known as roadhunter camo. Don't forget to wear a shirt the same color as your truck.
Master roadhunter tips brought to you by Bob.
The one thing you tyros have left out of this road hunting scenario is what my nephew referred to as "going stealth" on them....he would turn off the radio ......

Any road hunter worth a damn will make the shot regardless of motor, make, model, or year.

Might be necessary in high pressure areas, but I have access to the good stuff.
My places aren't easy to find either. Years of logging waypoints without your friends knowing takes dedication.

Oh, and his Adele soundtrack will have the animals mesmerized.
Hard to see, but I thought the edge of the cheekpiece looked a bit "off". Like to see a pic of the whole thing.
A guy that works at a local gunsmith whittled out an outstanding stock for his own .218. Absoulutely a first-class job. He sent it off to be checkered by some lady in PA, who also did beautiful work.
Holy cow MtnBoomer that stock looks amazing. I don't mind the stock of my new Mini Action, but it does seem like it ought to be a little more streamlined. You could go into business with mini action owners, and I'd be first in line!

I blew the pizz out of my drivers side mirror on my '79 CJ-5 trying to whack a nice rooster pheasant with my Remington M34 many, many years ago. Yeah illegal and out of season to boot but what a 16 year old did back then. I kilt him with the second shot dropped him off at Noni's and she waspleased as can be.

Sweet little rifles.
There's nothing off about any of those rifles. I assure you.

Yup. Thirty years later, I still regret the one I traded off for something that's also long gone.
I just picked up a nice Browning Light 12 to replace the one I foolishly let go because someone flashed a wad of bills in my face. This one will still be around when I leave.
You ought to air yours out once in a while. They're a pleasure to use as well as own.

Hey Flave... Will there be a bigger sister to the lil Howa? Mebbeee a .243 or 6.5 of some FLAVE...GRIN..Like a custom set of Truck guns...ScottyO. PS I really like the way it turned out!!!

These are my two favorites. Both Howa/Vangaurd actions.
Gruff, you really leaving??? Where to if I may ask..
Has the mini truck gun slain any critters???
Not really. We went calling last weekend and got skunked. Some dude was flying around and blasting dogs from the sky and I think that kinda hurt our chances. 5 stands and nothing.
My 243 MT has lost it's rough finish and has become a little slick, was thinking about a topcoat.
Flav's is a mix of three different Rustoleum cans. Multicolored Textured first, dusted with another color (Forest Green from the camo line) and then about a can of matte clearcoat. You can just keep adding clear till it flows out how you want. Working on a way to do something similarly uber with Duracoat.
Basically the same thing I did with my 721RSPT&G but obviously went darker green than on Flavs which had a tan base.
Here's the stock with just Rustoleum Grey Multicolor Texture, 7Express phase 2. It can go on thick and absolutely needs to cure for days but seems to be a pretty solid product. There's brown and a harder to find green too that look ok out of the can but dusting over with another color looks good to my eye.
Before in its original 80's RS glory
As a 270 SS BDL, solid lighter green. Good looking combo.
And another time in it's first 7 Express phase without texture...
It's part beaver!

Got another one on the way and will have a better idea after working it up. It's fairly time consuming but wayyy under a Micky LOL. PMs welcome.
You guys want me to do the McMillan deal for the mini? If I did it, I'd do 100 so the mold was mine.
We need to decide on a pattern...
Yes please. Snagged the last mini you guys had, and already planned on trying my hand at stock slimming. Would be nice to have a backup plan for after I butcher it...
It seems that Howa has a new "alpine" rifle on the website with a high tech stock on it. Wonder what the chances are that they'd inlet stocks for the mini action...
It's a shame that someone at Howa don't shoot,so they could connect dots.
Were it 1-8" and driving a mag system of greater COAL latitude, they'd of had it. Couple same in S/S and you are there. If forced to suffer 2.300" COAL constraints,I'd just as soon go Krunchenticker mags,if only because they abound and are proven in their rugged reliability. Going to a proprietary system that doesn't share mags and is of such trite latitude,is a right proper Goat Fhuqk.
S/S Stoners will grant more COAL than that and are 10 Clams a throw. With them, one can keep 75A-Max ogives above casemouths and reduce the leap to boot.
Because boolits matter more than a smidge, mags matter more than a smidge and the parcel can be no better than it's weakest link. When one becomes Twistchow and COALchow, the goodness is gone by default.
When talking .378" casehead DBM's,AM steals the show,as 2.500" is easily arranged.
Their 5rd is of modest profile,as compared to say a Stoner 10rd.
I'd much rather drive a blind magbox of far greater latitude, than a DBM squeeze which precludes the good stuff.
'Twere a 105A-Max and 75A-Max Show yesterday,with a single magfed smooched poke each. The 270 launches the 105's at 2525fps from it's 18.5" spout('335) and The Rocktucky is squirting 75gr formloads at 2980fps from it's 21" tube(Lever').
With PSA S/S Freedom 16" Middie Rifle Kits for under 350 Clams and stripped lowers for under 50,when talking bang for the buck...I'm going Krunchenticker to reap a S/S spout and eek more COAL,as well as reserve RPM at 1-7". Mags of course abound are are vastly superior to boot.
They rock with a 6x MQ on top.
Hint.
While Howa is better than a bunch, they failed miserably and only scratched the surface on this attempt..................

I wrote multiple emails and made several calls before the launch. I begged for the 8" twist and a 2.50" mag box. I wasn't a fan of the proprietary DBM either. I've even made calls and sent emails in the last couple of months at the request of my rep. All to no avail...
Weatherby sent me a questionnaire a few months ago asking for thoughts about Howa's mini. I told them the exact same thing I'd told Howa.....wanna bet they don't listen either?
Some day, somebody will connect the dots and everybody else will be left in the dust.
Izzactly what I thought about the stock as the plastique was shreading.... They've got good material but musta never handled a rifle with classic lines? Even these clubs had some slimness.
OK I couldnt let Travis have all the fun I read all the hubbub on the Minis and had to have one.I have a CZ 527 in 223 but this seemed like an even better cheap trunk gun (Thanks shortactionsmoker). In following this post I loved the idea of reshaping the stock. I dont think it was bad from the factory, but now I think its great
I contacted MtnBoomer (Carl) and asked him if he would work on mine. We talked about it and he agreed and I was VERY excited. I asked him to finish the stock and not tell me what it would look like. I had no idea what to expect. The Lovely Ms Peggy said what if you dont like it, I responed fat chance. I knew that if you ask a talented man to do what he does you would get something COOL. I also ask wait staff at a resturant "what do I want" They know whats good I get some great meals.
Anyway How cool is this? Carl took 4.2 oz of weight reshaped the stock to a nice trim feel. The stock is rigid enough that it still feels very solid. There is a very small area inside the stock that you can see the old color and when you compare it stock really looks crappy.
I have not shot it since I got the stock back it just came today. I really have only shot the Howa recommended break in. I expect a lot, time will tell.
Thank You Very Much Carl I Love it The pictures are not really doing it justice its a dark shade of brown with the highlights
Not this. I took a bunch of pics of Hank's stock before I started but can't find them. It wasn't all hacked up in the barrel channel like that other guy's! LOL
Mine looks so ghetto plain jane in the original factory finish....and the Tasco Pronghorn 3 x 9 by 32 ( $39.95) on top... with Simmons $6.00 set of rings...

Style and class goes a long way into the fun factor also....
but since Clark Griswold is having enough fun for the pair of us..
I can just spend my time shooting mine...
all it is getting is range action at the moment courtesy of old Man Winter....
but come spring she'll see a few thousand rounds or more exploding Sage Rats....and the occasional seagull or coyote that might be after the remains of the little rodents...
I may put some webbing on the stock just to 'class it up' a bit...
Kinda like taking a Fiat, putting 20 inch rims with spinners on them and Montana plates.... and a gun rack in the back window...

Stock looks great MtnBoomer! I'm surprised it still weighs 30 oz. SAS- any word on doing an edge or if Howa might potentially be interested in doing a run of high tech stocks like on their new "alpine" rifle?
What a classic example of "behind the camera, off screen editing" which means Pepper is sitting in a child carrier in the snow bank with a pot and wooden spoon. When the rifle goes bang, Pepper hits the pot and then is rewarded with a gummy bear.
It is commonly known as the Pepper pot bear scam...

Yet another internet "expert" talking out his ass.
Actually it was pretty awesome, not nearly as awesome as Flave(of course), but 3 for 4 at 100ish yards is pretty amazing....
Feeble is the part where you forgot to have your blue heeler sitting behind the camera with a pan and a wooden spoon to imitate the hits on a steel target.
Your dog ain't no good ifn' he can't run the camera and a pot and spoon to boot...
Gotta speak up too - It's Earth Fractone. Frosted Chocolate, Iced Expresso, and Gizzled Brown were all thrown out as they're clearly leftwing cupcake porn related terms already in use.
Hank, My mini mauser and i could NEVER shoot as well as 'Flave or Rez Buck. My mini mauser isn't twisted tight enough for those looong 100yd shots, and some folks think i'm twisted a little TOO tight. However if you already bought the gongs, maybe you could let me borrow Frosted Chocolate, and we could get Scott to run the spoon and pan while i shoot and you film, just sayin

Guy this needs to be done the The Midwest needs to build the fun factor, right now the Fireboys from the West seem to have all the fun
OK maybe we can only shoot 100 yards without hitting trees but it will make the gong louder so we need to hit the bucket harder
We will use two kids no misses
I dont know if the members know how handsome we are we will look like the cast of Oceans Eleven make a Fire video
You remember when we were all up for the elk hunt and the locals thought it was a fashion shoot for Cosmo?
#3 Fresh off the UBER-machine. Was requested to make it "smooth", it'll be hydro-dipped. Finished with sanding primer then Duracoat, a blend of three colors that's dang near like the others started but this one started out black... It was different than the green ones, more gooey to work with and ended up with dozens upon dozens of pinholes to deal with. Stiff but sucked ballz to work up, at least two extra hours than Flave's and Hank's. Went from 36 to 29 ounces as pictured without studs. Glad it's done. Will hopefully satisfy the owner.
I finally took delivery of the mini I put on layaway right before Christmas. Shot it today. Immediately came home and broke out the orbital sander. I wanted to send it off to MtnBoomer, but my patience was gone after waiting so long to get it out of layaway. The stock started at 954 grams, which is 33.65 ounces, and now it's at 795- 28.04 ounces. It still needs paint and isn't as pretty as MtnBoomers, but it's a lot more comfortable and obviously I'm glad to have 5.5 ounces off of it.
MtnBoomer - I have a green Mini that's going on a diet asap. What thickness is the stock there at the mag well area? I want to be sure I don't go too thin. Thanks.
bhh, welcome to the Fire. I don't know, maybe someone could measure one for you, however, the material is stiff and strong so no real worries. The green is superior plastic to anything else I've dug into, as far as plastic goes.
