Loonies hang out here on the ‘Fire?
What do/did you own and shoot?
Me?
1) an old Marlin levergun chambered for the .25-20 Marlin. Bore was shot, had it lined and chambered for the .25-20 Win. Worked very well. Sold
2) Stevens 44 chambered in .25-20 Stevens. Good shooter it was. Sold
3) .250-3000 M700 Rem that started life as a .22-250. Rebarreled and it is not and never will be for sale. ‘Tis a remarkably accurate rifle.
4) .257 Roberts, one a Ruger #1 that shot OK, killed stuff, and got sold. A second is a boringly accurate M70 Deluxe that will not be sold.
What’s your story!
I got a sparklingly accurate Model 70 featherweight classic in 25-06. It started out as a so-so 30-06 but I ordered a barrel from pac-nor and had barrel and rifle delivered to our own Redneck. Trued, bedded, and tweaked it is a joy to own and shoot
It's at it's best with bullets 100 gr and under. With the 75 v-max my buddy calls it "The Juice".
I've got some spectacular shots in with it on stuff from ground squirrels to coyotes and deer. I don't much care about blood trails. I can usually stand where a deer was when I shot and see it laying dead...
1) Ruger 77 in 257 Roberts which was my college graduation gift from my parents. It at one time held the most in the track kills of anything I owned.
2) Remington 700 257 Weatherby when they did a RMEF run. Truly learned what the phrase struck by lightning meant. Very impressive on a hogs head.
3) Remington 700 short action in 25-284. First wildcat.
It has been on an impressive run of kills on deer and hogs. The Lilja barrel loves the 115 Nosler CTBT, animals don’t.
4) Ruger 77 25-06. Inherited from my brother. I cherish it because he bought it on my recommendation hunted it for years and did great work with it.
5) Remington 600 chambered for 25 BRA. It’s purpose was for extreme accuracy with very mild recoil. Kids love the lack of recoil, mild report and deadly efficiency. It shoots in the tens with 3 different bullets.
Like Digital said not one of them will ever be sold. They have way too memories and way too many animals behind them.
GreggH
I waffled a bit when I ordered the barrel as towhether it would be a .25 or a .26.
Quarter bore won that decision.
Also waffled on whether to go .257R or 25-06. Always tended towards bigger motors...
257 Boberts, 700 classic
25-06. Husqvarna 1640 action, Iver Henriksen built
257 Weatherby Mag- Remington 700 CDL
I like all of them
1) 257 Roberts Kimber Hunter. I love this rifle. So far I have 4 coyotes and an 8 point whitetail with it. It's very light and handy. All with 100 G Interlocks.
2) 257 Roberts M70. I love this too but haven't even hunted with it yet! It shoots nicely at the range with 1 inch groups.
3). 25-06 Sako 85. Very well balanced and beautiful! 1 coyote and 1 pig so far. Both with 100 G TTSX.
Love the 1/4 bore!
It started with a pair of like new 700 Classics. A Roberts & a 250-3000. Dandy rifles. Not sure why I sold them.
A Ruger 77 Ultralite in 257 Roberts followed. It didn't shoot very well. It went away.
It wasn't mine, but my buddy had a Model 92 in 25-20. It was fun to dick around with. Never could get cast bullets to shoot worth a damn in it, but those FN Hornady 60s did pretty well.
A 60s era custom Mauser 98 in 257 Ackley Imp. was next. It didn't shoot all that well & was uglier than I could stand so it went DTFR.
A late model (2016) 700LR in 25-06. Fit & finish kinda sucks & it's very particular about what it will shoot well. Great speed out of the 26" barrel, but it's not one of big green's best. It's going somewhere for a rebuild & will probably become an 8 twist 280 Ackley.
Just bought another Roberts 700 Classic that was rebarreled to 257 Ackley Imp. Eagerly awaiting its arrival.
Savage 110 in 25-06
Vangard in 257 Wby
2 small ring Mausers in 257 Rob AI
2 large ring Mausers in 257 Rob AI
Defiance Rebel in 25 CBB
25 SAUM on the way from the 'smith on a Montana Rifle 1999
The Savage is the only thing with blood in it. 2 Pronghorn at 330 and 303 yards
257 Roberts
250 Savage
Both custom Mausers.
I had a Ruger 77 in 25-06 and a Savage 23 in 25-20. Both went down the road.
25-06 Remington 700 CDL, pillar bedded, free floated, 6x Leupold. It's got a good string of success on mule deer, a couple of pronghorn and some coyotes. I like the combo of light recoil, easy accuracy, flat trajectory and quick kills. Longest range muley was right at 400 yards, instant drop & kill. Shortest range muley was about 20 yards, instant drop & kill. Have generally used 115 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, 115 gr Berger VLD, Barnes TSX, but recently have been working with some 110 gr Nosler Accubond bullets that are shooting great!
Also have my grandfather's old Pre Mk V, 257 Weatherby on a Mauser action. He had it put together in Weatherby's old shop in the late 1940's or early 1950's. It shoots "pretty good" still, but I think my dad and his brother put a lot of hot loads down that tube long ago.
Regards, Guy
25-20 Savage 23 and a lefty mini Mauser in 25-222 Copperhead.
I have one, a Remington 700 Classic in 250 Savage. It's a pussycat to shoot, and quite precise.
The 25/06 Rem is one of my favourites.
A bear. A 100gr TSX. A Model 700 shilen 25/06.
25-20 Win 92 shoots great, esp with a 90 gr cast
25-35 Win 94 It has been rode hard. A saddle rifle for years. Killed many deer.
257 Robt. (2) on Mausers Built in the last 10 years
250-3000 Savage 99. As all of the old ones it shoots the less than 90 grain bullet best. Gave it to my great grandson to start his hunting.
25-06 Herters about a 1965 vintage. It was very accurate. Killed all manner of Montana game. From Elk to Prairie dogs. Stolen out of my car.
.25-20 Win - Marlin 1894 CL
.256 Win Mag - Contender pistol
.25-35 Win - Winchester 94AE & Contender Carbine
.250 Savage - Ruger 77 RL
.257 Roberts - Browning A-Bolt Micro Medallion & Remington 722
.25-06 Rem - Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker
.257 Wby Mag - Weatherby Vanguard
Way many along the way - .250 Savages, .257 Roberts, .25-20WCF's - gone but not forgotten. Pared down to concentrate on other ones. Just a Winchester M1885 Low Wall in .25-20 Stevens (Single Shot) now.
Just one.
A 25-06 improved.
I was day dreaming in my gunsmith friends shop one day and the next thing I knew I was on a payment program.
Tikka T3 25-06 stainless swapped into a Hunter walnut stock. Shoots the 110gr NAB over RL22 extremely well at both 257 Roberts speed and full 25-06 speed.
Ruger M77 VT 25-06 re-chambered to 25-06AI. Shoots the 115gr NBT sub 1/2 MOA at 3350fps.
Custom Pre 64 Model 70 in 257 Wby. Shoots the 100gr TTSX over RL22 extremely well.
A 1927 german BBF combination gun, rifle over shotgun. Rifle is a 6.5x52r (25-35 win), shotgun is a 20 gauge. I debate myself sometimes about selling it, will likely take a bath on it as I spent a chunk on it to fix some stock issues and scope it with removable claw mounts on a Zeiss Jena rail scope. I would be WAY upside down if I had paid for scope fitting, I did it myself.

Enjoy shooting my quarter bores. This Kimber 84M 257 Roberts is a MOA shooter:
Owned quite a few more 250-3000 Savage lever guns in various configurations in the past. Only Savage bolt guns like the Model 1920 rifles and the Model 14 American Classic remain:
We're just stewards for a time.
I thought there were some loonies here??? No 25-284? Geez.
Built a 25/06 in trade school because I got a Johnson Machine barrel blank for $20. It killed deer well enough. Rebarreled it to 270 and gave it to my wife for Christmas one year, has killed a bunch more stuff since with her driving it.
Put a Shilen .257 on a mag bolt face M70 push feeder a guy gave me because it was a pretty used up 338WM, broke stock, rotten bore, pipe wrench marks on action and barrel, flaking hard chrome finish. Cleaned up the action and stripped the chrome. Chambered the Shilen for 257Wby. Bedded it all in first a wood M70 Classic stock and later an Extreme Weather takeoff. It shoots great but it’s heavy. I’ve killed a pile of stuff with it. 85 or 100 grain bullets cranking along at warp speed it will pretty much slush the insides of deer size stuff. I don’t use it much anymore because it’s heavy and I have found that most stuff dies just as well with cartridges without all the fuss and flash. No denying it’s a hell of an effective killer though.

Smiling here! I am not alone.
I like 'em, but I currenly only own one, a Savage 99EG that I had a McGowen barrel in 250 Savage slapped on.
I've had a few others in the past.
Marlin 1894CL 25-20
Ruger 77 250 Savage
Ruger 77Mk2 in 257 Roberts

I plan on owning another 25-20 or a 25-35 eventually.
Working on the “full meal deal” of .25s in ULA/NULA.
Stared with a Model 20 in 257 Bob that I sent in for a rebarrel to 300 Savage. At the same time the .358 went in to become a 259-3000, and shortly after the 30-06 became a 25-06. About a year ago lucked into a model 28 In .257 Bee.
So, currently:
250-3000 (what a joy to shoot and carry)
25-06
257 Bee
Looking for a 257 Bob as well (I know, I had one…) to round out the bunch but of course it will be a tough find.
Had a Kimber Hunter in Bob but wasn’t crazy about it. After reading a recent thread about the quality restocking work from the guys at Outkast I wish I still had it to send in for a new stock.
Along the way had a 700 Classic in 250 AI, a model 1920 in 250, and maybe something else??
Would really like to have a petite wood stocked rifle in the 250 if the right one ever comes along.
Have had several .25-06's.. Then about 15 years ago got a .25-06 Ackley reamer.. All the barrels done with that reamer have been shooters, generally .5 Moa or so.
Had Roberts, gone.
in the early stages of messing with the Creedmoor case got a .25 Creed reamer.. I prefer it to all other short action .25's. The 100 NBT is fast and accurate in this case. Flame away
Rem 700 CDL 25.06, bedded, floated, bolt face squared and 40X trigger.
Smiling here! I am not alone.
Where you lead, we shall follow, Dan! (Well someone has to pick up the trail of spent brass you leave in your wake!)
2 model 20`s, 250`s, the first was a hand-down from Dad many years ago, and a AI on a 700 SA, wouldn`t trade any of them. The 250 started my handloading adventure when I was 14.
I've had a couple 25/06's, a Remington stainless and a Sako Finnlite.
Only have a Ruger 77 MKII 257 Roberts now but it comes so close to the '06 that it won't be going anywhere.
Nothing fancy but nostalgic. My dad brought a couple of K98's home from WWII. My brother turned one into a 35 Whelen, I turned mine into a 257R.
I'm shocked - not a single mention of a 25 Souper
Where are the true loonies?
I'm shocked - not a single mention of a 25 Souper
Where are the true loonies?
I have a 25 Souper in a Ruger 77 RSI that had been a 250AI. The 250AI didn't feed well in that rifle, so it got changed to a 25 Souper which doesn't have any feeding issues. The 25 Souper is equal in performance to the 257 Roberts and the shorter 51mm case allows for more COAL latitude.
I’m assuming everyone is excited about the possibility of a 25 Creedmoor?
Had a 257 WM MOA model. Shot 100 TTSX very well. Probably would still have it, if H1000 would not have become hard to find at the time.
Perhaps what the world needs is a .25x55....
Just one.
A 25-06 improved.
I was day dreaming in my gunsmith friends shop one day and the next thing I knew I was on a payment program.
IIRC your first post.
I have owned a few .25's over the years, a 257 Robert's in a Ruger#1, and a rechambered 2506 to 257 Bee.
I was never really excited about the .25 though, no idea why.
The most accurate factory hunting rifle I ever shot however is a 257 Robert's BSA Royal owned by my son
That he has owned for about 20 years.
It is still incredibly accurate.
Cat
Have owned a bunch of .25 bore rifles.

One, a rebarreled Ruger tang Ultralight in 250 AI.
I will join in on the praise ....my experience is with a 1970 model 700.
I carried it for 10 years as a steady on my sheep hunts in the 1980's.
I also took mature bull elk and moose with it....115 or 120 Nosler
partitions.
I recall a bull moose shot at dusk at 200 yards plus. I still haven't seen any animal do down faster.....boiler room.
As I aged I got a little tired of packing the wood stocked rifle with the long , 24 inch barrel.
I would like to try it again in a single shot version
I have been looking around.
I was a .257 fan for quite some time having owned rifles, all Win 70s, in 250-3000, 257R, 257R Imp, 25-06 and 257 WM. Of the group, the 250-3000 was my favorite and my sons used it successfully on many GA deer. I have since sold them all off and simplified my life with fewer rifles and more in the area of my current interest, DIY pre-fit builds.
For my purposes, the 257s fell into the same category as the 6.5s of the day, I'd just rather have a 270 with 130s and be done with it.
I'm not really a collector, although I still have a soft spot for most Win 70s, so I don't really keep things around that I don't use.
No love for the 25 WSSM? I have a trio of Winchesters in that caliber. One of the most accurate rifles I have is a push feed M70 Coyote in that caliber. We love the .25-06 in our family too. 3 generations of us hunt deer with it.
Custom .257 Roberts built on a M77 tanger action, Lilja, McMillan. Been firing 110 gr. NABs @ 2984 fps exclusively since forever, but now working up a 110 gr. ELD-X replacement.
I have a .308 HB that's just about shot out and I've been pondering a rebarrel to .25 Souper. Have a bud who had one built from scratch and it's a shooter.
DigitalDan;
Good morning from the finally clear skies of south central BC, while I can smell smoke still I can't see it much so I'll take it. In a similar positive vein, I trust your Friday morning is going well.
When I started to respond I could think of only one .257" bullet rifle, but then a few more popped into mind so here goes.
Even as a kid I was a "gun guy" and thus can recall my late father using a Mk III .303, Savage 99 .250-3000 and finally a Model 100 .308 for moose hunting. While I recall Dad saying he shot some deer before I was born and one after we'd both moved to BC decades later, he was primarily a moose hunter. They sometimes used a "party hunting" sort of hunting method so Dad both shot some moose - which then was any moose - with the .250 alone and likely assisted on a few and had my uncle Frank assist him on a few.
Because of his 99 I always wanted one of my own and came up with a 1920 takedown years later, but despite my best efforts using everything from 75gr FP .25-20 bullets up to 120gr, it would only shoot pie plate groups at 100yds.
During that time however, a buddy bought a B78 that I built a different fore end for, bedded it so it didn't touch the barrel or action and that thing was a shooter!
I was front and center when it dropped the biggest bodied and racked mulie I've ever seen to this day at what had to be 250 to 300 yds across a canyon with 117gr BT Spire Hornady bullets. If memory serves we packed 140lb of boned meat off of that beast, which had wedged itself between two trees when it hurdled off a cliff in it's death throes. The antler broke off on the left side as well, but buddy went around to the top where it'd bounced, found the broken part and I started to take the deer apart at chest level where it was stuck firm.
A taxidermist friend of ours used the same marine epoxy that I use for bedding rifles to glue the antlers back together, then he painted the repair and so help me it's hard to see now if one doesn't know what to look for.
Fast forward a dozen and a half years, our girls were getting into hunting and I was looking for a .243 for our youngest as the eldest had claimed her late Grandad's 6.5x55 which was the only light recoiling rifle suitable for deer hunting in the safe. A good friend of mine, now gone many years as well, was always buying and selling rifles and shotguns so I asked him to keep an eye open for me.
Sure enough he called shortly after saying he had a screaming deal on a 722 action with a .250AI barrel - well thought of Canadian barrel maker and installed by a gunsmith up north of us with an equally good reputation. Nodody else wanted it because it was a wildcat, but since we handloaded for oddball and wildcat stuff already here, it was a no brainer to pick up the rifle for much less than the barrel was worth.
When she was younger I modified a birch 788 stock that we had on the wall in the shop which already had a short length of pull. As she got older I changed out the stock to an ADL laminated and put a 700 trigger into it too.
If I'm not wrong she ended up taking about 8 mulie and whitetail bucks with 100gr Hornady Spire and 80gr TTSX bullets. Now that I think of it, I shot at least two deer with it too and honestly the little thing was deadly on even the bigger mulie buck she took - 145lb hanging carcass - at close to 300yds as a guess.
The last one that I'd completely forgotten about is a .257 Roberts on a 96 action that's sitting in the back of the safe, about 3rd in line for restocking on the projects list, which also needs some bolt modifications. I do have dies for it too Dan, so I should get to the ones in front of it sooner than later.
Thanks for reading, thanks to those who've shared their .257" experience and good luck this season to you all.
Dwayne
I just have my Kimber Classic Select in the Bob. It has been the only rifle I have taken deer hunting my last two seasons, which is saying something. I killed the largest buck of my life with it two years ago, a brute of an 8 point.
I love the accuracy of the rifle, the low recoil, and it’s effectiveness on the whitetails I have killed with it. I’ve been using the 100 SGK which has worked fine on deer, but seems to be a little soft. I have shot a couple of pigs with it that seemed to be about the limit of that particular loads effectiveness. I’ll be working with some heavier conventional bullets this year in hopes to control expansion and to increase penetration some.
DDan,
Man, there must be something wrong with a person who fixates on such an unimportant and insignificant caliber! I’d never be like that….
Okay…maybe just a bit of fixation on my part too…
- a couple of M93’s with257 Robert’s Shilen barrels…sold
- a Browning A-Bolt in 257 Robert’s that has killed everything from sparrows to elk…hopefully will stay in the family for generations
- Savage Model 23 in 25-20 WCF…sold
- Stevens 44 that was re-chambered to 25-20WCF and has a beautiful fiddle back maple stock. For black powder only!
- Marlin 1894 CL 25-20 WCF…wonderful little “do everything “ rifle
- Ruger 77 International in 250 Savage …had it for just a brief period then had to let it go because of finances
Probably forgot something but this is to the best of my recollections.
Just one, a 250 Sav Rem 700 Classic.
I've had a few:
Two .25-20 WCFs—a Savage 23-B bolt-action, and a Winchester 92 made in 1911.
One .25-35 WCF—an 1894 Winchester with a 26" octagon barrel made in 1898.
Eight .250 Savages—a Remington 700 Classic; a Ruger 77 and a Ruger No. 1 with a Douglas barrel; two Savage 99As made in the 1960s; a Savage 99 take-down; a Savage Axis with an E.R. Shaw barrel; a push-feed Model 70 Lightweight made in the 1980s;
Seven .257 Roberts—a Kimber 84; a rebarreled and “sporterized” Mannlicher-Schoenauer military rifle; two custom Mausers, one on an FN commercial action and the other on a Mexican military action; my paternal grandmother’s Remington 722; a Ruger No. 1 with a custom barrel; a pre-war Winchester Model 70.
An Ultra Light Arms .257 Roberts Ackley Improved.
Three .25-06s—an FN Mauser commercial action with an E.R. Shaw barrel and synthetic stock; a walnut-stocked custom rifle on a remodeled military 98 Mauser action with a P.O. Ackley barrel; a Ruger No. 1 Lipsey’s Special with a 24” lightweight barrel.
Two .257 Weatherby Magnums—a walnut-stocked Vanguard purchased directly from Weatherby; an Ultra Light Arms Model 28.
Apparently I’m a quarter-bore fan…
I only have done, a .257 Roberts custom on a 98 action, but it is a sweetheart .

I have a few Winchester 70s in 25 WSSM. It is a nice cartridge with performance like the 257AI. It never gained much traction in the market, maybe in part because it was introduced in 2004 and USRA closed the New Haven plant where they were manufactured in 2006. Winchester/Olin originally offered a useful selection of factory ammo, but now they only load the 120 grain PEP and only as an occasional/seasonal run. Winchester/Olin claims that the 120 grain PEP load for the 25 WSSM and 25-06 have the same muzzle velocity.

You need one more to make the count 25.

Is that the one where Winchester used the original 14" twist?
My first rifle at 13 was a 257 Roberts my uncle built with a Fajen stock with a Mauser 98 action. I gave the rifle to my nephew.
My current go to rifle is a Rem 700Ti that PacNor rebarreled to a 25 WSM.
Last month I picked up a custom 25-284 with a commercial Mauser 98 action in a beautiful walnut stock.
geedubya, your photography work is stellar as is your rifle and knife collection. Hope to see you at the hog hunt.
Yes Mathman.14" twist. Perfect for 87 gr Speer's , old Barnes 75gr X bullets and 90gr Sierra's.
It seems all my quarter bores have been Rugers. Not by design, it just worked out that way.
Had a mid-70's Ruger #1B .25-06, it would turn jackrabbits in a snowy field into real Jackson Pollack artwork. Sold at a gunshow for some other long forgotten plaything.
Got a heavy barreled 77V .25-06 in the early 80's, it wouldn't shoot worth a damn, at least not up to my exacting standards. Sold it to a guy in upstate NY where 2" groups were plenty enough for him to shoot deer.
Got a left handed stainless 77 Hawkeye .25-06 with the unnecessarily heavy magnum contour barrel, but it was a good shooter. Sold it locally.
Finally broke the .25-06 streak with this #1A in .250 Savage, which is a very well behaved little number that I feel is much underappreciated by the unwashed these days. Still here and likely will be for my remaining lifetime.

Hard to say as some are "farmed out" to succeeding family generations, but to my knowledge: (2) M700s in 250 Sav, (1) M7 in 250 Sav (1) Mauser 95 in 250 Sav & (1) M700 in 250 Sav AI. In the pase, I've let others talk me out of (1) Sav M1920 in 250 Sav, (1) M700 in 250 Sav & another M700 in 250 Sav AI. So yeah, I think you could say I'm a quarter-bore fan.
I’m assuming everyone is excited about the possibility of a 25 Creedmoor?
With a few minor dimensional changes, that would basically be a .250 AI, which people have built for decades.
That I remember, I've had a .257 Roberts, a couple of .257 Weatherbys and a couple of .25-06s. For my favored hunting (on foot and under 400 yards in open country), they work really well. Flat trajectory and pretty much point and click to 400 or so with the right zero. Of the three, I like the .25-06, though the Weatherby can be impressive.
I had a Kimber Montana .25-06 that was the only rifle I hunted with for a year or two. I did a lot of hunting during that time and killed a dozen or more animals ranging in size from coyotes to elk with the rifle. The Kimber was about perfect and had the whole package of balance, accuracy, light recoil and reliability. I had a long string of one shot kills with that rifle, including a few running shots. My streak was broken when I missed a coyote with it 6-8 times at about 75 yards. Though, to my credit the coyote was at the base of a mesa I was sitting on and the wind was hitting the mesa and turning straight up so hard it would blow you over if you got close to the edge. With the wind, the gun was shooting about 6 feet high at that range.
Despite the one coyote episode, that Kimber .25-06 is still one of my favorite rifles I have ever owned. Wish I still had it.
I just remembered a Ruger No. 1 .257 Weatherby I once had. The rifle was fairly accurate and was a limited run with 28" barrels, which on the short No. 1 action wasn't much longer than a 24" bolt action. I never hunted with it, but that rifle would shoot Weatherby factory loaded 100-grain bullets at 3900 fps. I didn't believe my chronograph so got my Oehler out and confirmed the results on my next range trip. It would do that with factory TSXs and one other load, 100-grain Hornadys I believe.
Ruger no 1 in 25/06 with a canjar single set trigger and hicks accurizer 24 power Leopold. It's one of the 1st guns I bought and will be the last one I would ever let go.
I’ve got a Bob in a Ruger Hawkeye. I absolutely love it, as does everyone that shoots it.
Any of you have a rifle chambered for the .297-250? H&H cartridge of bottleneck design using a .250” diameter bullet. Parent case was the .297-230 Morris.
I've got one. I used to have a really good friend down at the farm. O.T. ran the mower shop over on the next ridge, and I was always bringing him stuff to work on. O.T. had grown up here and hunted all over this end of the county. His big thing was grouse, but he hunted turkeys and deer as well. O.T. always bragged about his deer rifle, a custom Mauser 25-06. I even heard about it from his friends. It was sort of a small legend.
O.T. went blind in his 80s. It was a sudden thing. One night he was watching TV and it all went dark. Shortly after that I came to visit, and he was fretting on having enough money to stay in his house. I offered to buy his rifle. O.T. cried when he went to the safe and got it out. He died over the next winter.
I have to say that up until now, I haven't had that great of an experience with the rifle. I tried to shoot 117 Hornadys, and they grouped okay. It just didn't have such a great effect on the deer. I put it aside and brought it back out this year with 100 grain Speers. Yesterday, I shot a great group with it, and it's coming back out with me this November.
The stock has all sorts of little scratches and indentations from O.T. holding it against fenceposts for a solid rest.
Currently:
2-M700 BDL 25-06
Custom M700 25-06 AI
Custom M700 25-284
Had:
M700 classic 25-06
Kimber Montana 25-06
Kimber select 257 R
Custom M70 257 AI
I’m a big fan.
3 currently......
700 BDL in .25-06 ... First centerfire rifle I bought with my own money. First cartridge I learned to reload for.
700 .25-06 that belonged to my FiL. Technically belongs to my wife since he passed.
Barrett Fieldcraft ..25-06
Have dies for a .25 Super and .257 Roberts.... Just no gun, yet....... missed out on a Kimber .257 Roberts

My 257 Robert’s looks like yours. 03a3 action and a Herters stock, oh and a Douglas barrel.
I also have 2 99’s in 250.
1 - 250 Savage
1 - 257 Creedmoor Brux barrel
9 - 257 Roberts 2 have Brux barrels
2 - 25-06
5 - 257 Weatherby mags. 3 have Brux barrels 1 a Lilja barrel
> i only own 1 of these 25 caliber rifles in a Remington its a 30 Express Brux barrel 257 Roberts , i am not much of a Remington fan , many are Ruger #1`s . Pete53
I love quarter bores.
My first was a Remington 722 in a 257 Roberts. It shot great but was heavy and had too much drop in the stock. I traded it long ago.
I also had an 1894 Marlin 25-20 that I traded for something. I wish I would have kept it.
I have a NULA 250 AI and a Kimber 257 Roberts. Both are incredibly light, very accurate, and are a pleasure to shoot. On varmints and deer sized game they bunch above their weight class.
A marlin lever matic would be neat for the collection.
Ruger M77RL-MKII Ultralight in .257 Roberts
Ruger M77ST Tang Safety in .25-06 Remington
Started with the 250 savage then the 22-250,then the 25-06,257 Roberts, really liked a wildcat we did 25-39 and finally the 25-45 Sharps.
The sharps shoots like the 250 Savage does in an Ar-15.
They just plain work
.
I am new to this 1/4 bore stuff. I eased into it with a Ruger M77 257 Roberts. The first range session shows promise.
Anybody consider the fact that the 243/6mm is as close to being a true “quarter bore” as the 257/25-06,etc…
No love for the 25 WSSM? I have a trio of Winchesters in that caliber. One of the most accurate rifles I have is a push feed M70 Coyote in that caliber. We love the .25-06 in our family too. 3 generations of us hunt deer with it.
Winchester screwed up they should have designed a 25 WSM many of us thought and hoped Winchester would have made this a commercial cartridge and some rifles.
Own a grand total of two. Both in .25-Oh
First is a Weatherby MK V Ultra-Lightweight. Shoots NUTZ for accurate !!! Only couple whitetails I shot were with 100 grain TTSX and I was highly unimpressed with the quickness of the kill compared to a .30 cal 180 grain Grand Slam projectile placed similarly.
Other one is a gorgeous 700 BDL that I inherited and have never fired and likely never will.
Only have had a couple, both in 25-06, both in Ruger tang safety 77s with the 24 inch magnum weight barrel.
The first was sold in early '84 to help cover expenses with a brand new wife & daughter.
The second had the stock shortened two inches, a decelerator 1 inch pad added and gifted to a very petite 13 year old grand daughter.
I had a Remington 700 Classic 25-06 Rem., it was the 1990 Classic model. I traded it in for a '97 700 Classic in 280 Rem. I still have that one. Would love to find another 700 Classic 25-06.
NYH1.
There're a couple 25 Neidners hanging around at my place. One is a 77 tanger, the first factory built hunting rifle I ever bought. It's not going anywhere, nor will it modded in any way. The other is an Interarms Mark X. That one was a $200 pawn shop find that will probably be rebored or rebarreled to something else.
Anybody consider the fact that the 243/6mm is as close to being a true “quarter bore” as the 257/25-06,etc…
No because they’re called “quarter bores”. .243 is the groove diameter, the bore diameter on a 6mm is .237”. The bore diameter on a 257 is…wait for it… .250”
Had a couple over the years, 257 Wby Mag, 250-300 Savage (3 of em), Savage 10 257 Roberts, but currently only have a Ruger 77 in 257 Roberts (1989) in the safe. Absolutely loves 110 gr Nosler accubonds. Probably be a few more to come. Love quarter bore... and really love 22s.
I have Remington 700 Classic in 250 Savage. I have had a Remington 700 in 257 Roberts, Ruger 1V in 25-06 Remington, and a Savage 16 in 250 Savage. I should have kept the Savage 16 in 250 Savage.
Three .250-3000s; Dakota 76 Alpine, Rem 700 Classic, Savage 99
One .250AI on a M70 compact classic
Three .257Rs; '95 Chilean Mauser, Santa Barbera Mauser, Montana bolt action
One .25/06 Savage 110
Heres the line up
Ruger #1 250 Savage
Custom 250 Savage built on a shortened Mauser action
Custom 257 Roberts built on a 1909 Argentine Mauser action
Cooper 25 WSSM
Weatherby Ultra Light 257 Wby
Winchester M1891 25-20
Thinking of adding a 25-06 but still looking for thr right one
* Sako 591 LH in 250 Savage AI.
* Tikka T3 LH in 257 Roberts AI.
* Blaser R8 LH in 257 Roberts AI
* CVA Apex David Smith custom in 250 Savage
* Browning B78 in 250 Savage
* Winchester Grand European O/U in 257 Roberts.
This thread is encouraging, since I am trying to properly feed and enjoy the .250 Savage, a .257 AI and a 25-284.

my 257 Creedmoor Brux barrel really shoots well , i also have a 257 Roberts with a brux barrel that shoots well both are 8 twist barrels. it appears 8 twist is a good choice for the Quarter bore rifle ?
Just one. 257 Roberts.
One, a long action 700 with a Brux 24” tube.
Forgot to add .257 R.

OSU Sig- I have never seen a B78 in 250 Savage I bet that's one sweet rifle.
One of several nice groups with the .257 Roberts at 100 yards.
And another....5 shots
My .250 Savage ain't jealous. 8 shots, 100 yards. Guess which one was the flyer...

I adjusted the trigger on bud’s M-70, 25 WSSM. What a nice little rifle.
I’m not much on WSSM’s but loved the way that little rifle handled. Bud has plenty of brass and supplies, which would be my concern.
I was asking how well it fed rounds, he said just fine and accurate.
The factory cut checkering looked sorta raw. I added Tru-Oil to the checkering, worked it over with a tooth brush, wiped away the excess. It sure did make it look better. He was pleased.

mmm
Savage 14 - 250-3000
Winchester P64 M70 - 257 Rob
Mauser (shortened) - 250-3000 - Blackburn/Gaudy
OSU Sig- I have never seen a B78 in 250 Savage I bet that's one sweet rifle.
It was a 22-250 that I had bored out to 250 Savage. It was a 26'' heavy barrel that I had cut down to 23" and thread for a suppressor. It has helped the balance but I need a set of the sling swivels for the B78, or I need to add swivel studs.
Shot my first whitetail buck in 1956 with a 257x6.5 Arisaka. Next half dozen or so
with a mod 722 257 Roberts. Had a mod 20 savage in 250-3000, had belonged
to my Dad. Then got a 25-06 mod 700, but too loud and didn't drop em any
better than the Roberts. Have an old Savage 25-20 that was my father in laws.
Hope to get my next buck with my Ruger Hawkeye 257 Roberts, its taken a
few of the last ones. I was 80 yrs last April, but as long as the thrill is there
I'll keep climbing the hills, but they are steeper now.

It didn't have the studs in the stock and forarm? Not a hard fix. I assume it's the round barrel so you could put a barrel band stud there vs the forarm
The B78 uses a different kind of swivel than the Low Wall uses. The base fits flush with the stock.
25-06 T/C Encore
25-06 No. 1B
I wish Marlin/Ruger would bring the 1894 back in 25-20 and the 336 in 25-35. I would be running with cash for each.
GreggH
I failed to mention I have a 25-20 Contender carbine.
Have had a Ruger 77 & No.1 in 25-06 plus about 4 Rem 700's. One of them my truck gun for 12 or 15 years, yeah it killed a lot. Had a couple Bobs in M77's & wife took her first buck with one of them.
Don't need anymore rifles but a 25 Souper of a 25 Creed has been pondered on.
I’m starting to think I’m quarter bore cursed. I had a late 80’s/early 90’s 700BDL SS 25/06 that didn’t shoot well enough for me to keep it. Then in the last 3-4 years I bought a Ruger 77 257Roberts that shot 2-4” groups so it got sold then a very nice 25/06 700BDL that also didn’t shoot very well so I sent it off for a new barrel and it is about to go back as it too shoots only “ok”.
Hopefully one day I’ll get a keeper.
I haven’t given up hope though, I found 150 pcs of new 6.5x47L brass I didn’t know I had so I’m thinking a 25x47 Lapua will solve my problems.
Model 70 Classic 25-06 I picked up here off the Fire some years ago.
Ruger tanger in 250 Savage.
Mark V .257 Wby. Mag with 24" barrel average accuracy.

you need to build a 257 Creedmoor too ? 8 twist barrel this cartridge shoots very good ! Pete53
Count me in with a R700 CDL 25-06, T3x 25-06, Ruger RL .257 Rob, Win 70 Fwt .257 Rob.
I think the .25’s are a sweet spot among many great options.

It's my favorite Kimber of Oregon rifle I could ever hope to own. It is one that will be passed down to a grandson.
And thank you for the compliment.
Found a Browning 1885 High Wall in 25-06. Just need dies and some brass and it'll be putting meat in the freezer.

That's a solid score!
Shot my first couple deer as a teenager with a Ruger .257 Bob and always looked back fondly at that caliber. Sadly that gun was sold a very long time ago.
My favorite now is a Rem700 .257 Weatherby Magnum with a stainless fluted barrel that I've customized with a Greyboe stock and Karl Kampfeld fluted and skeletonized the bolt for me.

Thanks beretz. It has some cosmetic flaw but if it shoots good I can get the blems fixed, get rid of the polyurathane finish, matt blue the metal maybe get the receiver color case hardened. Should be a good fit between the 250 Savage, the Roberts and the 257 Weatherby.
Made a tuff choice several months ago
Had to unload some toys to cover some bills
Had a Remington 700 , 26” barrel synthetic beaver tail stock .
Nothing done except trigger and lug lapping
That thing would often shoot in the .1’s and .2’s with right bullet and powder combo
I mean with a good batch of 100 gr SGK’s
Or pro hunters
Had a Nikon 4.5-14 SF on it for years and never had to touch it for zeroing
On the other hand I had a Remington LSS 243 that my wife had bought me several years ago for a Christmas gift that got stolen 12-13 yrs ago before I even fired it
Finally got it back about s year ago and it shot piss poor for a 243
Rebarreled it with an urban rifleman 26” barrel and what a smoker
.13”and .18” first two groups with sierra 107 gr tipped match kings
And just about anything else down the tube .5” or so
So I let the old gun go , but dam I hated it .
Had a Savage 243 110 that shot lights out too , gave that one to my ex brother in law, he had problems and sold it
Dad had a 25-06 BDL that was 3/4” or less
That LSS was the weakest shooting 1/4 bore I ever had
But ran a bore scope in it and a couple of the riflings didn’t come all the way to the throat
Kenneth
Just one. 257 Roberts.
With shot placement like that, it's all ya need.
