Posted By: d500lnn Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/03/24
I often thought about selling my Fieldcraft in 6.5 creed, but every time I take it to the range I always say “no way I’m selling this rifle”. I went today and shot for a bit. The little Fieldcraft with 3 different factory loads all shot under (to well under) an inch at 100. HSM loaded with Berger 140’s, 143 ELD-X and 140 Nosler BT. All very similar POI and exact POA. It was pushing 70 degrees today here in Georgia too. So when I think of selling, I’m just gonna go shoot it and decide against it! Anyone else love their fieldcraft enough to turn their nose to the money they bring?
Posted By: Pappy348 Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/04/24
As Newhart used to say, “That’d be me”.

I don’t shoot it much, trying to preserve the barrel for the next guy, either one of my sons or a grandchild. As you say, it puts similar-weight bullets to the same place. Haven’t shot the real heavies much, just some test shots. Some Norma 107gr match loads I picked up real cheap land a bit lower, but nicely clustered. Now that I have the Garmin, I need to clock those while plunking some plates.

The FC and my Browning 725 were the most expensive guns I ever purchased, and both have been flawless, well worth the price.

Can't help as I do not own one but my Kimber's seem to shoot pretty well.
Posted By: Pappy348 Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/04/24
My Longmaster was probably the most accurate CF rifle I ever owned, or fired. Life came along and bit me on the butt and I was forced to sell it.

I thought the new owners were going to start production again? Anyone know?

I heard they were going to be reintroduced starting with the LH version; slated for an April release.

Like April 1? I recall a thread awhile back....
Posted By: alwaysoutdoors Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/04/24
I believe it amounts to the new owner, Rob, likes the FCs ,but no formal timeline has been announced for bringing them back.
Posted By: David_Walter Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/04/24
My 6.5 Fieldcraft is stupid accurate, and stupid easy to load for.

If I ever was to be one and done, that rifle would be the one remaining.
Posted By: SWGAShooter Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/05/24
Mine shoots the 143 ELD X factory loads well also, around 3/4 to an 1. It did not shoot Nosler 140 BT ammo well. It seems to like 120 Nosler BTs using Varget and StaBall. I have a few loads that are consistently .6–.8”. I think that’s pretty good for a short barreled, scoped, 6lb rifle.
Posted By: d500lnn Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/06/24
Yeah all these accounts are similar. I don’t know a soul that owns one, that doesn’t like them. I didn’t love it at first sight. After I shot it, I realized I shoot it so well. Then again and again….its just a keeper!

I only have (3) and they are fhuqking HAMMERS. Hint...................

I sold one in 243 years ago when they were plentiful, I cry when I think of it.

I regret selling my 6.5 x 55. should have sold all the others and keep it. It was the most accurate rifle I ever owned! Seem like I do this fooish [bleep] often!
Posted By: Hammerdown Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/08/24
Yessir, those Fieldcrafts are a really nice rifle.
Posted By: horse1 Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/08/24
I was all ready for their release of .378 bolt-face based cartridges and a 1:7-1:8 22Creed. Alas, they discontinued the line prior to that happening. I've re-barreled a few Kimbers to fill the voids, but, I'd probably still buy a 1:7 223 FC w/2.5"+mag-box and a 22Creed w/no slower than 1:8.
Posted By: VernAK Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/08/24
There's a nice one in 6CM for sale in this neighborhood but I already have two 6CMs and that's more than I'll wear out.
Posted By: Big Stick Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/08/24
In 223/223AI/270 and Speedmire,I prefer the Montucky. It's 2.815"-ish box is more than plenty, for 90 Beer Cans and 112's. I drive them all in 7" RPM. Hint.

The Fieldcraft's Swan Song is their 3.00"+ COAL and that do some SERIOUS favors in other chamberings and especially 7-08 with 180's at 2600fps. Hint...............
Posted By: DubThomas Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/08/24
I'll never get rid of mine. 6.5X55 shooting 130 grain Accubonds or Swift Siroccos' pushed at 2775 with RL19 and, like Stick said, it's a hammer. Under .5 inch groups all day long. I've killed several west Texas whitetails, some feral barbado/mouflon cross sheep, wild hogs up to about 275 and killed 2 big south Texas white tails this year.
Posted By: Big Stick Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/08/24
They are ruggedly fhuqking reliable and shoot like a dirty fhuqking bastard to boot. Hint.

Just sayin'...............

Barrett Fieldcraft action bolt torque? Front and rear?

I want to make sure mine is right.
Posted By: vabowhntr Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/08/24
My 30-06 will keep all the loads I made for it inside 3/4" for three shots. Wish it was a 6mm CM, but I got it when dreaming of an elk hunt and I can live with 130 gr TTSX at 3300+ that shoots in one hole at 100 yards, or 125 gr BT at 2850 that groups the same.

Since Montanas were mentioned, the one I have played with should have never left the factory...maybe a 6 CM barrel would fix it...

Lilja is the easy button there. You can order the factory dupe contour and 12-16wks later it's on your doorstep. Thread, chamber, put the stock on and rock on.

I googled it after I posted and found the same result.

I’ve had this rifle since the second year of production, and never had it out of the stock before.

People are way too orgasmic about fieldcrafts. It’s the same as people wanting fixed power scopes again. They quit making them because only a few people were buying. Just like when colt was labeling them. The history is the same. Just buy a freaking tikka

Makes me wonder if he’s ever held a Fieldcraft, let alone shot one.

I talked to Barrett at SCI a couple years ago and the gentleman said that demand wasn’t the reason they stopped production, but rather because they had to concentrate on some new big military contracts.

I have zero regrets about buying mine, only wish I’d picked up one of the close-outs from Whittaker. Consider this, if you don’t like it, there will be no trouble sending it down the road. Mine is a 6CM, and that’s perfect for me here.

Yep. Concentrating on the most profitable aspect of the business to get the numbers as high as possible for the forthcoming sale. Smart decisions. Ronnie is no dummy.

Have to agree. Tried and tried to get them to do a small run in 7/08 but they were having issues sourcing the 7 mm blanks - couldn’t even meet the demand for the regular two versions.

The 7-08s are rare because they did have trouble getting blanks that shot as well as thry wanted. Most of the 7-08s that did get made had an 8 twist which is another thing they got right. My 18.5" 7-08 actually has an 8.5 twist which is good enough to shootb180s at 1/2 moa. A fire member found it for me in Montana before all feildcrafts became scarce.

My 6mm Creedmoor is a 21" and it shoots even better than the 7-08. Someone offered me big money for the 7-08 once. Enough that I could have built a nice custom. I kept the field craft though because there's no guarantee a custom will shoot as well. Barrett put these fieldcrafts together well.

A 22" sporter barrel 7-08 would have been very nice with the fast twist and OAL freedom in the mag box. I had one of the 21" 7-08's but didn't spend much time with it. The 22" 6.5 was what I always reached for.

Barrett made a 24", cerakoted, non-threaded, 6.5 CM as well. I never owned one of them but I think they would have been nice as well.

Scheels has the best discounts I have ever seen. Once saw a Jack O'Connor commemorative Model 70 in the Sioux Falls store for $1700. Brand new.

Elsewhere, in Sportsmans Warehouse, Denver, I bought a new SS Model 70 in 300RUM for $525 but that is as low as I ever saw them.

Always shop, always spot. Never shop, never spot.

I damn near did, certainly wasn't expecting to see one just sitting there.

Agree, some deals to be had at Scheels. Also picked up a like new 5 digit Classic Stainless 375 H&H this past year for 700.

What baffles me are people trading these in for probably 25-30% less than the sticker.

Does any body know for sure how long the aluminum bar in the front of the stocks is.Were the sling stud is threaded.
I know it’s at least 1.5 inchs but curious to see if anyone knows.
Every one I have owned or shot was very accurate with factory ammo, I didn't need to develop a load.

Regrettably sold the 243 and 308, but kept the 6.5cm. It's in the box and still unfired. It's waiting for just the right scope.

Even if the Fieldcraft eventually re-ermerges under a new manufacturer, I can't imagine what could be done to make it better.

I have zero regrets about buying mine, only wish I’d picked up one of the close-outs from Whittaker. Consider this, if you don’t like it, there will be no trouble sending it down the road. Mine is a 6CM, and that’s perfect for me here.

By the time I had enough scraped together for a FC, the announcement that they were suspending production for a few months (late spring/early summer 2020?). The cupboard was pretty bare everywhere I was looking and the option I wanted was a threaded 7-08 and there were zero to be found. I called Whittaker’s and the only one they had left was a display model 6.5 Swede for $1453. They said it looked fine and sent it out to me and it’s been a tack driver.

Once I’m finishing shooting up my factory SST’s, I’ll see how it does with the Norma partition ammo. I have a bunch of 143 ELD-x’s on the shelf for after the partitions.

To the OP’s question, it was kind of tempting at one point to see what I could get for it when I saw one on GB listed at 2X I paid, but knowing me I would have ended up pouring it all onto something that wouldn’t have been much different except maybe in a 7-08.

Anyone have an update on when the new company that bought Barrett will start making the FC again?

Given the amount of world conflict and demand for military arms; I’ll guess sometime between not soon and never. But I’d love to be wrong in this case.

Why wait for a Barrett when you could just buy a tikka?

Why wait for a Porsche when you could just buy a Toyota?

Lol it’s a hunting rifle that’s lucky to see 2 boxes of shells in its lifetime. Yes just buy a tikka.

You could’ve just said you’ve never shot a Fieldcraft.
Posted By: David_Walter Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/25/24
My Tikka weighs 1 lb 8 oz more than my Fieldcraft with the same model scope onboard.

However, every time I think of selling the Fieldcraft, I throw it to my shoulder and it points like a fitted shotgun.

And then I take it to the range. And “nope”. It goes back in the safe to await hunting season.

OTOH, after I shoot those two boxes of shells, I can sell it for 40%-50% more than I paid for it; not a bad deal…..

Any info out there on adjusting the trigger pull weight? Need to lighten mine up. Thx.

I have yet to handle a FC. How does it compare to a Montana? I’ve handled one of those and I honestly don’t shoot well unless there is some mass. Too muzzle light and I’m less than optimal.

I kick myself for not buying one of those special runs that had #2 contours on it.

Thanks David!

Pardon my ignorance…do you know if it is factory? Did Barrett make a 6 Creed in the Fieldcraft?

I may drive down and check it out.

Cody will be there 10AM on Tuesday......if'n you want it, contact now because he posts stuff on Facebook and items are sold over the weekend. The best LGL in Alaska.

It is still there. I was fondling it 10 minutes ago like a pair of boobies.

$2750 with 1” rings. On consignment so he may come down more.
I absolutely do not need it but we’ll see.

Man boobies?
Posted By: T_Inman Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/30/24
If need be.

They’re still boobies, right?

Man’s got to do what a man’s got to do….

😳

Maybe, but I ain’t gotta do that……
Posted By: Swampman700 Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/31/24
I wish I’d bought one in .30-06. The guys at Outpost Armory say the new owners may bring the Fieldcraft back. If so, I’ll buy one.
Posted By: Big Stick Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/31/24
They suck heavy ass in Long Action, due exceedingly trite COAL "latitude",which is polar opposite the sensational S/A version. The 264 Kreed and 7-08 will stomp one in '06. Hint.

Just sayin'..................

You were probably in there when I stopped in......There were a couple Fairbanks dudes in there drooling on the merchandise.......hardly standing room at the gun counter.
Posted By: T_Inman Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/31/24
I was by myself but it was about 10:30 AM or so...a few other folks were in there but I didn't know any of them.

Cody (I believe it was him anyhow) said that if it is still there in 2 weeks, he was going to turn it into a .277 FURY.
It'd be a fun one but I just don't shoot enough to really justify it and I have a Rem Ti in 7-08 Rem sitting here for mountain hunts. The 1/7 twist on that 6 Creed was intriguing though.
Posted By: Big Stick Re: Barrett Fieldcraft - 03/31/24
The Seex Creed is fhuqking SENSATIONAL and I much prefer it to the 243Win...if only because I have both. Hint.

.620 BC 112's at 3000fps,do not suck. Hint.

My 6 creed. Field craft shoots extremely well. I've been running 108 eldms but I'm about to try some Barnes 112s. Do the Barnes work of on game with their tiny hp? The 108s worked very well on deer for me.

Gotta agree with Stick as I much prefer 6CM over 243. I've worn out a couple 243 barrels on my Dakota but finally rebarreled to 22-250 after getting two 6CM Fieldcrafts.

CM.

Favors 139 Scenars over lighter bullets.

I'm going to try the 147 ELDM just because Stick says so.

What are you all torquing your base screws to?
Also action is 80/36 inch lbs.
Going to buy some torque stix and they come in 35 or 40.
What are your guns liking, closer to 35 or 40.
