Sako Finnbear 300 Win. 23" 1-8 number five (.700) throated for the 208 A-Max, McMillan Sako Hunter, Black Gold and White.

Will be a heavy bitch, but I don't plan on carrying it a lot.

358WSM should be interesting, I like 35's.

I've thought about building something based around the 208gr A-Max, bad bullet.

1. Sako vixen .223, 22" #2, 1-8 twist, Banser stock.

2. Pre-64, undecided. It was a 22 hornet converted to 222 and I am still contemplating. Leaning toward a 223ai, or 6x45.

I am also working on a 338winmag on a mauser action (just received the bbl today).

I'm also working on a 7x57 on a BRNO action. I'm gonna do this one nicer than the 338winny.

20 inch tube; some sorta 17 caliber.

Seems before Sako made 17's they made all sorts of wispy tubed guns in 17 for, gasp, H&R.

I'll go get it....

Got a couple in the works...

Pierce Short Action, 6BR, Brux 1:8.5" Remington Varmint contour at 24ish, McMillan A3.

700LA, 6.5x55AI, Douglas No. 2 at 23" 1:9", McMillan KS in EDGE fill (decided to mix it up on this one and went gray grin ).

Go Edge. My Classic Edge stocked 22-250AI with a 22" is such a bad arse it isn't funny. Hard to leave it behind. I'm still PO'd the hog hunt last Dec. didn't allow .224 caliber.

Almost done:
223 AI on a 700 SPS Tactical. It shoots 75 Amax's pretty well, so the factory barrel is staying.
Mcmillan A3 red/black swirly

250 AI, Rem 700, 21 inch Douglas rem factory sporter contour. Ti takeoff.

For my next project, I can't decide between:
6/06 on a Ruger LA tang safety. Probably go #2 contour, 24 inches or thereabouts. 1/8 twist. Mcmillan in Purple/undecided swirl.

or

6.5/204 On a Rem 700. 1/9 twist. Rem mag contour with flutes. Mcmillan Rem classic. Turquoise/white swirl.

He found a 17 tube, but it had no throat for 4 inches. I scored him the 20" "H&R" 17 Rem. barrel. Sez "Ultra Wildcat" on it. Won't run the no-go even close, snug yet closes easily on the go.....and ammo.

Mikes .500 at the muzzle, a 222 tube goes .575.....

Nothing too exciting. I just bought a 7-08 SS ADL, and I think I'm going to order an EDGE for it, and slap a different scope on it, maybe a Conquest. I've been toying with the idea of rebarreling my Sportsman 78 to a .222 (thanks, Ingwie!). I would like to get rid of all of my Burris/Bushnell/Weaver/B&L scopes and stick with Zeiss and Leupy.

Question: what is a SUCKS?
Posted By: spitfire_er Re: Coals in the Fire? - 09/23/10
lets see.
#1 1917 Enfield in .308 Norma Hart SS 26" Timney trigger
#2 1910 Mexican Mauser .243 Win. everything done, Douglas, Timney
#3 1910 Mexican Mauser .257 Rob or 6.5X55
#4 1917 Enfield 6mm-06 Rock Creek Barrel
#5 VZ24 Mauser .308 Win Bench Gun

#1 is done, just needs to be blued.
#2 is almost done, just needs to be blued and stocked.
#3 is just action
#4 Gathering parts (have coupon for 1/2 price off on Rock barrel)
#5 Gathering parts
Posted By: RickF Re: Coals in the Fire? - 09/23/10
Nothing that exciting. I'm getting to know my old, new-to-me '47 M70 270 in a Legend edge.

Also a 17# 260Rem F Class rifle, built by Greydog on a Barnard S action, Krieger #17A 28" tube and a heavy fill A5 stock. On top it wears a 8.5-25x50 LRT Leupold.

Right now I'm busy just getting to know the new rifles in the safe, don't need anything else.

700 ADL
Callahan Speedlock Firing Pin Assembly
Redfield 3-9
Talley lw lows
Ti takeoff

I just don't know what chambering. Is it worth cutting down and punching a factory barrel? Or should I just order a new barrel from Pac Nor? Its currently a .25-06, wouldn't mind a .25-06ai or a .280ai.

700 250AI is at Mcmillan having barrel channel inlet fixed....not their fault. 1/3 brown 1/3 black 1/3 purple swirl and Rock LVSF dupe. Its a bit nose heavy so going to cut it back a bit.

Sitting on two 8 twist 224 rocks and waiting on a 3rd. Will probably go light on one in a #2 and going into a McWoody Swirl Compact in 223ai . And heavy on the other with a 5hv Rock I already have and a A5 in 22-250ai

Finished 70 Classic in 25-06ai with a Douglas #2 and a brown blind mag Mickey Edge. Yet to be fired in new stock but drivin tacks in old stock.

And about 5 others in various stages of completion.

Funny you should ask.

I didn't have any projects going until I walked into the local pawn shop last Saturday. He doesn't have many long guns, but he had an old '06 that somebody had spatter painted with gray paint. Thing is the floor plate and bolt looked like a pre64 model 70. Sure enough it was and a featherweight to boot circa 1956. I had my smith adjust the trigger and I've taken the first layer of paint off the original stock. It looks remarkably like one of those McSwirleys with some of the wood showing through the paint. The LOP is under 13" so I've got to find some walnut and redo the recoil pad.

Old guys like old guns.

I've got:

1) Parker Hale '98 Mauser action, #3 taper Shilen, and Bansner stock going together in 338-06 A-Square

2) Stevens 200 long action, #4 Broughton 1-in-8" twist 6.5mm barrel, Timney trigger, and BVSS stock chambered to 6.5-06 AI

Both in the works, and a fair bit of both using parts purchased here on the 'fire!

One I'm fantasizing about is a Borden Alpine single shot, #5 Shilen 1-in-8", Jewell, don't know about the stock in .22-6mm Rem AI

Ya something close to that.....grin. I've seen a few colors I wanted at first and changed my mind when it came order time, but not that one. That rig takes the cake.

Looks like you met your velocity goal. Sweet looking rig and it has got to hit hard...

My only coals in the fire concern a short-ish #3 260 in a Compact pattern. I'm wanting something easy-shooting and handy that will still deliver at longer ranges. Long range around here is maybe 400-500yds.
Posted By: HuntKY Re: Coals in the Fire? - 09/26/10
7 Rem Mag
Win Mod 70 action
McSwirly Supergrade,(50% Woodland, 25% Med Tan, 25% black)
Pac Nor #4, 1" shank, 1:9 twist cut to 26"

I've got the action, handle is ordered and should be close to being done. It may end up a STW when its all said and done though.

I want that 330 Dakota on Kempfelds rifle page , this one

http://www.kampfeldcustom.com/index_041.htm
Posted By: Wildcatter264 Re: Coals in the Fire? - 10/01/10
Nothing too exotic. Loading for a couple of bookends I just picked up - a M-70 transitional in 257R that looks like it's never had a scope on it so need to decide whether to keep it that way or put at old Lyman 4x on it. The other is a 330 Dakota with a great piece of wood I mean to hunt next year.

Have a M-99 out for metal work turning it into a 338-284 and then a classic wood stock. But really waiting for the Hawkeye African 404 Ruger wood stock to be put back together - there's a rifle that brings back memories of old Portuguese East Africa. smile
Posted By: red_alder_ranch Re: Coals in the Fire? - 10/01/10
have a 1917 German Mauser action off getting a Lothar-Walther 6.5 Swede barrel installed. Have a nice Fajen walnut stock blank here waiting for it.
Posted By: thismortalcoil Re: Coals in the Fire? - 10/02/10
Smith called and said my BSA single shot 22 is done. The thing was a mess, so the tube was cut to 20", new front sight, new fore end and butt plate. A reblue was also needed. If I can ever get home to pick it up, will make a nice squirrel gun.

416 Ruger on a 1909 Argy, Aussie walnut

7x75R vom Hofe SE on a Hagn singleshot

Hopefully, I'll be working on a 358 WSSM of some sort before next fall. Just can't decide if I want to do it on a bolt or a single shot.

I told my wife,"No more"........she knows I'm a terrible liar...grin!

I'm waiting on a stock from Mcmillan for a R700 .280AI Bartlein, 1-9" #3 5R. With an Edge it should finish at 8lbs with Talley LW's and a 10X PMII....
Posted By: KDK Re: Coals in the Fire? - 10/03/10
I don't know that I'll follow through, but the idea of building a long range tac rifle in .338RUM has been occupying my thoughts lately. 700 action, Mickey tac stock, 28-30" heavy barrel, Nightforce glass.

Is the BSA single a Martini? If so, I am definitely looking forward to pics... I'm jonesing for a cadet (whether BSA, WR, or other) in a centerfire 22 or 218 Bee.

I'd damn near kill for a nice Cadet in say 218Bee or 22 Hornet or K version thereof.

Yes it is a Martini, started as a 50's target rifle, kept the rear apeture sight, and the bull barrel. If my eyes aren't good enough, then I'll drill and tap, my smith says he can make a special base for it.

Four pre 64's

6.5x55 Bartlien
30-06 Douglas
35 Whelen AI Douglas
300H&H, Bartlien
McMillan Supergrade stocks and Williams 670 trigger guards.

Got them back from the smith yesterday, bedding them in the morning and mounting scopes.

Just some redoing on my Borden 280AI. McM (yeah yeah I know-given my past stance on syn stocks) Marksman pattern in a swirly of some flavor, new bottom metal, and cerakote.

I'm working on a couple of similar builds. The faux-Ti .280AI is first in the queue, and I'll work on a chunk .243AI for next year. I have a #1 Lilja slated for the .280AI, and I'm thinking either a Krieger or a Hart for the .243AI.

Me too! Man, your post brings back memories, Steelhead!

When I was about 14 or 15, a nice farmer friend let me use his Cadet which was chambered in R-2 Lovell (performance about like a .222 Rem, but with a rim).

Lovely rifle with an absolutely fantastic trigger pull, lots of subtle scroll engraving, and a really classy walnut stock. It was very light (I carried it on driven hunts for coyotes on his land, and the land surrounding his).

I tried to buy it, but no luck. frown I hope a handloader who could really appreciate the rifle eventually inherited it!

Is that accuglass beding with color added?
Posted By: skywalker Re: Coals in the Fire? - 10/05/10
280ai
24" hart barrel
mcmillan classic stock
rem action
optics: still thinking.........
Posted By: raghorn Re: Coals in the Fire? - 10/06/10
It's accraglass gel with dye added that came in the pack. I've been using it for a good while and really like the results. It's easy to work with and stays put.
Posted By: GeorgiaBoy Re: Coals in the Fire? - 10/06/10
I have some accuglass sitting on my bench. It has been there for years. I've just never experimented with it. It looks like you have it down-pat.

I need to get it down and try it....on something other than a McMillan. wink
Posted By: raghorn Re: Coals in the Fire? - 10/06/10
Red or green box. If it's red trash it and buy some "GEL".
Posted By: GeorgiaBoy Re: Coals in the Fire? - 10/06/10
It's the green box. It came with a video on glass bedding I ordered from AGI.
Posted By: jauntymorel Re: Coals in the Fire? - 10/06/10
.35 whelen
Interarms mark X
Lilja #3 @ 22"
NECG hooded front sight, island sight, and barrel band
McMillan interarms mark X classic-woodland camo
Timney trigger
Cerakote the whole thing graphite black
Leupy 2.5-8 in talleys

Still a ways out, but thats the general plan
Posted By: GeorgiaBoy Re: Coals in the Fire? - 10/06/10
The 250AI pictured by Paul W. has me smitten.
Steelhead has been kind enough to lend some advice.

I'm thinkin:
Stainless Vanguard/Howa action
Douglas SS barrel, 21", #2 taper, .600" at muzzel.
Talley lights, Leu 2-7

Still deciding on the stock.
Will be McMillan Sako Classic
Don't know if it will be a conservative swirly, a lightweight, or something more colorfull--may ask for a "steelhead" original.
Posted By: raghorn Re: Coals in the Fire? - 10/06/10
I finished the Ti takeoff one for my son and it went 6# 10oz. Also finished the pink/brown one for my wife this morning. It ended up 6# 15oz. think they will hunt!

Raghorn,

I don't want to hi-jack the thread, but looking at the photos, it appears that you only bed the front of the action, recoil lug, and first couple of inches of the barrel.

Do you bed the rear of the action also?
