saw this on another site. they came up with some awesome pics and shared their own creations.
i'm always building, let's get some ideas and share some stuff.
doesn't even have to be a mauser. some guys have done works of art with mosins, enfields, arisakas, etc.
Start with this...
End up here...
There are much better craftsmen than I, but I am persistent.
My dad's 7x64 Obendorf action with a blued 25" 10 tw sporter barrel with no open sights, has a custom Germanic hogs back stock with a Ebony schnable fore end and deer antler grip cap, has a modified safety a Timney trigger, and a fixed 8X Khales on top.
He also has a few more FN's and Interarms that are sporterised

I am pretty proud of this one, A CZ 550 Mauser, 416 Rigby, with metalwork by Ed LaPour and Stock by our friend Karnis Knife scales are Elephant Ivory and blade is S30V, built by Bruce Bump:
Same rifle as is in my avatar to the left here
Not super fancy wood, but here is my FN Mauser in 257WBY. Getting a new PacNor Tube screwed on, 28 inches, and getting re-blued in a very dark, deep bright blue plus a Model 70 Style Safety added so will look a little different in a few months. A mule deer hunting rifle, pure and simple:
Not a beauty queen here, a pure working/hunting rifle on a 1917 Enfield aka BIG Mauser. Only the receiver and bolt body are left as original parts, bolt guts, trigger, everything else is upgraded. Cut rifled barrel in my wildcat 340 Tyrannosaur, (338/8mmRemMag) easily the most used, deadliest rifle in my safe:
Laminated stock re stained and finished to be a weatherproofe dead nutz reliable performer under all conditions, and it is. Needs to have the Limbsaver recoil pad re trimmed up a little where it is flaring some from sitting buttpad down in the safe and from the recoil of 225gr bullets launched at 3100fps. Lots and lots of now dead critters from Africa, Alaska and the Western US taken with this rifle.

Donsm70 and others,
My FN 257WBY has a dual tone light/then dark color pattern like the rifle above, but mine is a little less stark or bold. What causes that? What is this anomoly or feature called? I think it is quite attractive, but I am curious as to its commonality and cause as well as if this is considered a plus or minus, value wise, in a stock or stock blank.
I am thinking that you will know, or at least hoping or someone else here will. NICE looking rifle you have there, and a great caliber!
EdM,
Nice collection of FN's! You will probably get a bit of indigestion when you learn that my similar FN, now a 257WBY, was at one time a fairly rare 257 Roberts. I did not modify it, that was done before I came into posession of it and since the bolt and magazine have been modified for the bigger ROY 25, I am merely re barreling the well worn tube in that same caliber. I am sure it would be worth more than it is now had it been left as a 257 Roberts.
.275 Rigby
Damn, Karnis. Amazing rifle
FN .30-06.
Yeah, I cheated and called McMillan
Here's one that was built on a budget but turned out better than I would have ever expected.
Barrel; An old 8X57 "guild" 1/2 round 1/2 octagon barrel with a full integral rib bought off ebay for $100. The bore looked like a sewer pipe. I had it rebored and chambered for a .338-06.
Action; Legacy Sports double square bridge Mauser action bought on close out for $300.
Stock; A piece of Turkish walnut bought out of Luxus Walnuts "reject" barrel for $500. It had a huge bark pocket in it that was a real pain in the butt to fix. Shane Thompson turned it for me. He is the man when it comes to layout. He kept most of the bark pocket out of the stock and I filled in the rest. We used my pattern and I fitted and finished the stock.
.275 Rigby
Wow! Now that is what I'm talking about. Karnis, that is gorgeous! If I EVER have anything that you might be interested in, I am definitely interested in that rifle. Just sayin'.
SM,
I do not know what causes that effect or if it is good or bad. I do know, however, that I like it and it shoots very
well.
donsm70
you suck!
I had Mark's machining book when I was sure I was going to go to Trinidad. Unfortunately lost it in the divorce and as I understand it he's no longer doing any work.
Said it before. There is no doubt you have some of the nicest rifles anywhere. Always like seeing the pics.
Always wanted one stamped .275 Rigby - just for giggles. It would never see Africa or anything like that but would be a great conversation round the woodstove in November.
Don't have any pics. Nicest one I've ever seen was at a small gun show a couple of years ago. .257 Roberts, guy claimed it was an early rifle by Al Biesn...don't know if it was, but it was simply stunning.
Wow, there is some STUNNING stuff here! Great thread idea. My Mausers are pretty good, and I am proud of them as well as pleased as punch to have hunted with them, but it sure is fun to see some real top shelf stuff here.

Stuck this 57 Lyman on my old Oberndorf sporter last week. Not a collector anymore as previous owner stuck a pre-64 model 70 barrel on it back in the. 50's. Kinda the best of two worlds now!!!headed to the woods to shoot it this weekend.
Husqvarna 146, rechambered to 9.3 x 62
Kaywoodie, I like BOTH of those rifles! Especially the 9.3x62! Always wanted to play with that cartridge, and I am giving SERIOUS consideration to having my BRNO ZKK 600 (now a 30/06) re chambered to that classic big game thumping round.
I did not post pictures of my ZKK 600 because 1) is is still on its way to me from over seas (BATFE paperwork is all in and GTG on the import) and 2) it is a pure, non fancy, well used working rifle and no beauty queen. I do plan on re finishing the wood and maybe re bluing it when I get it, but the Walnut on it is straight but not colored or eye catching. It has some cool features like an automatic pop up peep rear sight that comes into play when there is not a scope base holding it down, so some QD scope rings will definately be in order along with another low X Burris Posi Lock Scope if I can find one.
That ugly old husky has become my go to piece for serious work
Here's another old Mauser from the back of one once the gun safes. Need to shoot this old girl again. 30/06.
Geez, Kaywoodie, your back of the safe "Extra" rifles are better than 99% of other peoples best in the house guns!
You know me, not much of a bolt man or I'd upgrade the Whitworth stuff to something purty.
There are some really nice rifles here! Thanks for posting!

SA WEET rifle there! That looks like a near clone to my 7x57 that I just got back from my gunsmith. The stock colors look much alike, as does the stock shape and other stylizations. Mine has a checkered steel buttplate with widows peak instead of the recoil pad and no scope yet, plus some sort of custom cocking piece mounted safety with a rather small checkered pad to work it up and down. A Safety like I have never yet before seen on any rifle, but it is pretty cool and definately lightweight. I bought my rifle apx 95% finished or so, and had my local guy do the final work. It came back to me just this past Saturday and I am quite pleased, but alas I must sell it. As soon as my semi new Digital camera gets here from Braindead I will take and post some photos of it.
Ironically I sold Mr. Feeleeps the action. That is a beautiful rig.

My Brno ZKK 600 has that feature. It is now a 30/06, but is likely to become a 9.3x62 in the very near future. Pretty awseome idea, IMO.

There are some very cool rifles on this thread. Congrats to all.
Bucktales,
Those SVEDE'S (
) are wonderful! What great lookers, and stalking/hunting rifles!
Did you convert them from cock on closing to cock on opening? Maybe with the Dayton-Traister kits?
EdM, thanks for sharing the great photos and memories with us. Pretty cool stuff there.
@ safariman,
No, still original, even 2 stage triggers, both of which I have gotten quite used to.
The best I have seen and owned were English Rigby's but I don't think they are worth the money.

Those are great as is, and I'm glad that the maple's pattern wasn't cut from the other's wood or I'd have drooled on my keyboard. The one's pattern in the other's wood wold just invite lust and envy.

Those rifles will still be treasured pieces, and still out hunting & killing stuff, 100 years from now.
Wow. This thread is some expensive bandwidth!= Congrats to all!
That sure IS a beauty there! One fine DGR there. Have you hunted it? Plans to do so, soon?
Everything a Mouser WISHES it could be.
Wood is for fireplaces and bluing for colorin' books.
JSTUART;
Top of the morning to you sir, I see you're up early/late yet again. Sorry about that but nice to visit.
I know my Alaskan 'Fire friend Boxer isn't a fan of the type you've shown, but I most certainly am.
If I'd ever be able to arrange life and finances correctly, a bucket list rifle for me would be a full wood Brno.
I'm currently playing with a VZ24 action and if the '06 barrel that I've spun onto it shoots OK, it's going to get a stock built that resembles a Brno full wood.
Well it's for our eldest daughter so if she's OK with that then that's how I'll proceed.
Anyway sir, not that it matters one whit to you or anyone else - but I like your Brno's just fine.
Have a good weekend sir, all the best to you and yours.
Dwayne
Hello Dwayne, the Brno's certainly set my blood to racing...I shall hit the sack soon as a mate and I spent this afternoon casing the river bends for firewood and have found an area that would fill several Semi's, we will be cutting all our winter wood this week...should take us about six days.
Have a good weekend, and please say hello to the family.
James.
JSTUART;
Thanks for the reply James and will do on the family.
With an apology to any and all for the derailment that I'm semi- infamous for, is the firewood you look for standing dead or blowdown?
I'm going to guess it's not coniferous either?
No panic on any reply James, inquiring minds and all.
Have a good weekend sir.
Dwayne
It is all on the ground, and is redgum and box...one of the old river gums has come down in the last twelve months and is laying right where we can drive up to it, too good to ignore.
We will cut everything but the trunk, which is a good twelve feet thick, this we will leave to a mate that will slab it and sell the slabs down south as A grade for furniture and such.
I usually get a trailer out of two chains before a sharpen, but the box is a heck of a lot harder so we will be taking three saws and half a dozen chains.
Thank God for the Oregon chain sharpener.
James;
Thanks for the reply and information sir.
If there was a head shaking/wincing emoticon I'd use it now. We're pretty spoiled here with our Douglas Fir and larch firewood it seems.
Two saws and half a dozen chains would last me half a dozen years up here if I'm careful.. ouch!
Thanks again for the information sir and again apologies to the OP for the trip into the weeds.
Have a good weekend again James, all the best to you and yours.
Dwayne
PS;
To the OP, these aren't the prettiest Mauser's I've ever seen, but if one was to suggest that "best" meant as reliable as a 4lb hammer, then in the spirit of the thread and perhaps seeking forgiveness for the derailment.
My good wife's wartime Steyr built 98 parts gun. As mentioned it shows up and has worked in all weather, each and every time it's been asked. This is a scan from quite awhile ago now, but I know for sure and certain if we pulled this rifle out of the safe today and of course first sighted it in that it would feed and fire without a hitch.
Eldest daughter's 96 Swede built in 1903 - reworked by me for my late father in the '80's and then passed back to her before he died. She's become quite proficient with it.
As well as the above rifles, we've currently got another two wartime 98 action rifles that I've built to suit me. They both are very plain, but they do work as asked which is sort of an endearing trait.
Dwayne
I would not lose too much sleep over Larry's preferences. He would trade Catherine Zeta Jones in for Kelly Osborne if he thought Kelly was less maintenance and would carry his poop for him.
Get it? Boxer poop?
I reckon it plum flatterin',that you "don't care" so much,as to scour the 'net to plagiarize pics...to relate how little you care. Laffin'! Not that I don't enjoy your Imagination and Pretend. Re-laffin'!

How about this one; apparently first built by Iver Henriksen because his name is on the barrel. Recoil pad installed, the stock refinished and some lines refined by our own inestimable "Karnis".

Hello Rick, the rifles in order from top are round bolt 1950 Brno model 21 in 7x64, spoon bolt 1950 Brno model 21 in 7x64, 1956 Brno ZG47 in .270, and on right bottom is 1949 Brno model 21 in 7x57.
I sold a 21 to a mate across town in 7x64 that is fitted with a 8x Hensoldt in claw mounts, I am doing my best to convince him to pair it with a mint 4x Hensoldt in claw mounts and box the whole as a set.
I notice that nice rifles turn up every time I am broke and can ill afford to purchase, luckily I have a very understanding wife.
Sorry, the knife at the top is an old German Kissing Crane that I cut down, I gave it to mate as he didn't have anything to kill with and watching him butcher some sheep, goats, and pigs without a decent knife was just too painful.
Besides which, he is a mate and I think well of him.
ps, the stag Randall recently went to the fellow that purchased the 21 with the Hensoldt, I sold it to him for $200, mainly because he liked it.
Glad it made the trip well!!
I think you will love it - put her to good use my friend.
(and I have your rings on the way too!)
SuperKchunt,
I enjoy your Imagination, almost as much as you do...though for entirely different reasons. Laffin'! As an aside, how long do it take on the average, for your Pretend to become "real" to you? Re-laffin'!
[bleep] HILARIOUS,that you care "so little",as to take the time to plagiarize my pics and upload 'em onto your Photobucket account! You poor poor Do nothing Day Dreaming Kchunt, that schit is [bleep] FUNNY! Bless your heart.
Lemme fuel your Imagination even more and you can Pretend you were there. Laffin'!
Ain't it a hoot how's there's more pics of me Outdoors in your Photobucket account, than there is of you?!? Laffin'!
Freebie for you,so don't forget to mention how you took the pic. Laffin'!
You "hard chargers" are a [bleep] riot!
Question, are the colours really that vibrant there or is that a facility of the lens?
Odds are it's "vivid" color mode in the camera, or whatever they call it in the Canonista language
(and yes I know I'm guessing)

That's a really gorgeous rifle
Somehow or another, I had never bought a Mauser. Probably because I collect single shots, and have a slew of them. The few bolt actions I buy tend to be the more unusual ones.
That changed last week, when I stumbled across this rifle:
(sorry, cell phone pic)
Supposedly one of 50 LH actions that PO Ackley imported.
But it took me a couple of days to notice this detail on the barrel:
Maybe I can learn to shoot left handed

Is this 375 H&H BRNO 602 still considered a Mauser?
Close enough. Good looking rifle.
...if one was to suggest that "best" meant as reliable as a 4lb hammer, then in the spirit of the thread and perhaps seeking forgiveness for the derailment.
As mentioned it shows up and has worked in all weather, each and every time it's been asked.
Yep, that's first and foremost what best means.
That said, your girl's full-stock Swede looks great.
Rovering;
Thanks for your response and comments on her inherited rifle.
I like to think every time she drops a buck with it that my late father is beaming down on her. Sometimes if it's real quiet I can almost hear his low chuckle of excitement when a buck was down.
The 4lb hammer is a bit of an inside joke for me. When we were farming back in Saskatchewan each tractor had it's own toolbox. In the toolbox was the usual assortment of wrenches and two hammers, a 24oz Ball Pein and a 4lb Machinist's/Blacksmith Hammer.
Typically the repair would start with the 24oz and when push came to shove, the 4lb hammer would come out.
When someone who was in need of assistance would get on the VHF radio to request it, the standard first question was, "Which hammer are ya usin'?"
Anyway for me, a reliable 4lb hammer has that particular meaning attached to it.
Thanks again for your reply and thanks too for those who have shared their Mausers with us. I do know that the pretty ones can surely be work horses as well.
Regards,
Dwayne
That's a beautiful .375. Slobbering.
