I went to the local toy store this morning since I was in the neighborhood for a haircut. Had 5 or 6 1899/99's on a floor rack, nothing special and no bargains. They do have a back room though and was told there were more there. Well, two weeks earlier a collector from NJ came to the store owner with between 62 and 64 1899/99's. I asked what was the best he had and was told there was a MHG with a 26 inch barrel. Supposedly not cut and part of an order of less than 30. Went for several K's, I didn't see it. Anyone confirm the short barrel story?
One engraved model, bubba'd. Aluminum non-factory butt plate, not sure if the butt was cut, no condition otherwise, more than 3500.00. A nice 26 inch 99B takedown but I think refinished, metal and wood, 1K. Also had a 1895 308 75th aniv NIB for 1200.

I think I got the best of the rest. In between the second and third trip to the store I told the wife about what I had seen. I had mentioned a NIB EG 250-3000 for more than 2K but everything looked right, box and rifle. She convinced me I should get it. I am satisfied with the purchase but don't know what paper is supposed to come with it. I've attached some pictures, not good ones. Are they good enough to tell if the paper is right?

Nice EG and a great caliber. Very nice for any collection! The savage original muskets were 28" all of the MHG muskets were 26" (800+). One sold on GB for over $5k at between 80 - 85% condition. Do you know if the MHG was totally original?

Blair, the store owner passed along what the seller told him regarding the 26 inch barrel. The seller said Doug Murray confirmed. Who knows?

Thanks for the compliment. Not really looking for the EG but when you see one like that you gotta decide.
So Steve, my boy,(eh man) when you taken that baby out and bust some buckskins with it?????? grin grin I wish my wife would tell me to go buy sumpin like that. Hell, she probably wouldn't mind but those are few and far between. Congratulations on the great decision making. Very nice. Hard to say what every piece of paperwork should be there, but what you have looks correct to me. But who am I????? grin grin

Steve, what is the serial range? Looks like a late 40's, early 50's hang tag.

Not many still NIB with papers!
Posted By: steve99 Re: A New Jersey 1899/99 stash - 03/29/08
LBK See that's what I told the wife, what can you do with this if you can't shoot it. Then I thought about the interest I earn at the bank and how well the stock markets doin'. Pretty good rationalization I thought.

Rick, serial is 6366XX. Since I only am vaguely aware of serial numbers and their decades I figured early fifties. There is an LBC but it's stamped too close to the edge at the bottom of the boss and is cut off. It looks like a "D" though and that would make it 1952, the year I came into this world. If accurate.

You got a good woman there, Steve.

NIB 250-3000? SUPER!!! smile smile smile Congrats!

Charlie,

In PA. Boyers Hardware store, Slatington, PA. About 15 miles north of Allentown. The guns did come from NJ though. Ever heard of anyone with that many 99's there?
Posted By: boltman Re: A New Jersey 1899/99 stash - 03/30/08
I've bought from them before. If I recall correctly, the last rifle they sold me was a Ruger No. 1 .416 Rigby.

boltman, Allan doesn't give anything away but with me he is fair and stands behind what he sells. Others say the same.
Posted By: steve99 Re: A New Jersey 1899/99 stash - 03/30/08
Don,

Maybe. Story was he wanted to give/sell them to a son but the son's wife wanted nothing to do with all those rifles. So they came to PA. Woulda like to got there sooner.

Bill, was supposed to tell me and dick the guys name a couple years ago. grin grin Don
Posted By: boltman Re: A New Jersey 1899/99 stash - 03/30/08
Yep - would be great to be the first one standing in line when a large group of guns like that comes in smile Those opportunities happen rarely.
Posted By: Loggah Re: A New Jersey 1899/99 stash - 03/30/08
First in line when a couple decent ones come in dont happen very often! grin Don
Steve,
Congrats!
How much of a time interval between the first and third trip?
Posted By: steve99 Re: A New Jersey 1899/99 stash - 03/30/08
PB, ohh about 6 hours. On the first trip I put 40 on a 99H BBC. 30-30 in nice shape if you didn't mind a dried up recoil pad stuck on the cut stock. Had to think on it. Don't have a BBC and wanted one as a shooter but didn't want to pay near collector price for this shooter. So I went back to get the dough and free up his stock. Looked at everything again and left. The third was the charm.
Nice pickup. grin
Allen just started selling on GB.99c 7mm-08 NIB just sold and second time around on a 99 358 NIB.Both look to have been wet to me.The 7mm-08 had a rust spot on reciever and the 358 looks as if the butt is stianed and end of box looks like label was wet.

300 EG NIB sold today at Auction for 2200 plus 15%
Maybe it's the newbie showing through but who would pay $2200 for a 300 EG? Man the 300 EG'S are a dime a dozen.Sorry for the hijack Steve99.
Posted By: Rick99 Re: A New Jersey 1899/99 stash - 03/30/08
Steve, that sould make you feel good...$$$ smile

Yes, 1952 production.
Posted By: Calhoun Re: A New Jersey 1899/99 stash - 03/30/08
Lots of 300 EG's.. but VERY few New In Box. That's what makes it worth the big $$.

Take the box away or shoot it and 60% of the price goes with it.
Posted By: steve99 Re: A New Jersey 1899/99 stash - 03/30/08
Thanks all.

As I said wasn't looking for an EG, not particularly fond of the stock style. Must come fom hangin' out here, with Cal the exception. Red makes a good point. My take is new in the box is worth going after if priced right no matter the caliber. Always good trade fodder if not for your own collection. This one in 250 was icing.

Fug, now that will give me a warm fuzzy. Not a great deal but a fair deal. Thanks for that.

Rick, thanks for the confirmation. A birthday rifle is always nice.

RP,

If those sold within the last week or so from Allan they probably came from this collection he bought. I didn't see those on auction. But what was left yesterday at the store was nothin special. Someone with a sharper eye and more knowledge might could find something I missed, probably would, but none were in collector condition but priced at or near collector prices. There is an saddle ring carbine there, with the stud and ring. Silvered receiver, don't remember if the stock is cracked or not. Seems that was at 1900.00 IIRC.
Original box adds 10%.
The buyer of the 300 EG NIB for 2530$,I pity.
You done good Steve,
to not let that one get away from ya.
About 1998 (10 yrs ago) I let one out for 1200.
at 10% annual.Be at least 2400 now..

I might be wrong, but didnt that gunshop have a couple of
NIB Winchester Model 88s in 358 Winchester a few years ago?
Posted By: steve99 Re: A New Jersey 1899/99 stash - 03/30/08
Jericho,

I didn't see them but it could very well be. He moves a lot of guns through there. Small shop but has been there for more than 100 years according to the owner. Same family since the start.
Posted By: RAM Re: A New Jersey 1899/99 stash - 04/02/08
60% ???? Seems a tad low

Just kuz someone with more cash then brains plunked 2.5 K doesn't mean that's what its worth.

Same gun (.300 EG as new box and P & T) has been advertised for over a month @ $1300 and apparently is STILL for sale cuz the ad keeps running.
Posted By: Calhoun Re: A New Jersey 1899/99 stash - 04/02/08
I know 3 or 4 folks that would grab up a true NIB 300 EG at $1300..

PM me where it's at and I'll forward it on.
Your opinion, there is a difference in collecting true collectables
and junk shooters.Guy must have some smarts or would not be able
to have that kind of money.
