Hey, I just got a 1926G and I think it is the sleekest, coolest 99 I own. Heck with the R's. They remind me of car bumpers anyhow. How's about we see some G's?

The best thing about a post war R is if you run out of ammo you have enough weight to beat the animal to death! Had one, bye bye!

Weight has never been an issue for me rather it is all about how the rifle fits and feels at the shoulder. The T fits me well also both are a tad short though.

99R's were the best model Savage ever made.

Great thing about the 99 series is everybody can find one to love and one to hate. I don't think much of the R's either, although they are still better than anything made after 1960

I think if I was building a fence I would use post war R's for the posts and EG's for the pickets!

I think if I was building a fence I would use treated 4x4s & barbed wire & stuff like that.

Come on Joe! Everyone knows that R's are too heavy to carry around in the woods. Some of us still walk about in the woods when we hunt you know.

Still, gotta say that I really love my R. I can look at a target, close my eyes, bring up the rifle and the scope is dead on the target. The only thing that even comes close to it are my G's

Every Savage has the potential to be a great hunting gun but out of all my 99's I'd put it my 99R in 300 up against any of them out there for accuracy.

Last year I put 3 shots into one ragged hole at 100 yds with nothing but a cheap 3-8X Savage scope on it, could you imagine if it was wearing a nice 3-9 Redfield or Leupold?

well I have an r myself... nice and heavy just how I like it.

I'm at 3 R's and an RS right now.

An R and an RS in 300, a 308 and a 358.

Next up, a 243 and a 250.

Only way that 243 EG is going anywhere is if I find an R in 243 to replace it.

Haven't even had time to see how that gun or the 99A in 250 shoots yet. Actually I still haven't even scoped them yet. Work is really busy this year.

One good thing about an R forearm is it'll make good firewood in a pinch! Of course, a schnaubel forearm makes for good kindling!

One reason I've become partial to 99's for hunting is the sheer handiness/light weight of the one's that I own. Not an R in the lot. (Doesn't mean I would pass one by though.) If I were going to start carrying a heavy rifle again I would go back to the pre-64 M70 '06 or one of my Springfields.

Left one is a R 300 w/ a case hardened rotor.
Middle is a R 250
Right is a 1937 RS in 250 with a T7 mount w/ a 29S Weaver.

You would have to do both, the R buttstocks were thicker and wider than the EG butts.

Given that the stock on my R is cut and padded, I doubt that'll be likely to happen.

Yup, Rs are generally great shooters! Don't know if it's the extra weight or what but it is very consistent.

My only R in 300. I've never shot it or hunted with it. I mainly use it to do squats and benchpresses.

My working 303 R. Not much to look at but it brings home the venison.

Prewar 99R! Now we're talking! And in 303...

I have one R and its a very good shooter. It does not have a serial number and iirc it is D&t'ed. What year did they start factory D&t'ing ??

The catalogs say they started D&T in 1950. But then the catalogs from '46 to '49 are kind of sketchy concerning R's. Here's a photo of the caribou I killed last season with a 1950 vintage R in 300 Savage. The guys on the forum last fall have seen this but I thought the new guys would like to see it.

Here's a couple more old pics for the R. Mines a 1950, in 250. It had been drilled for a side mount even though it was factory D&T. Now it has a 1968 Redfield on it, Joe.

I don't believe anybody has seen any pre-1950 Savage 99's that were believable as a factory d&t for standard mounts on top of the receiver.

In the 30's you had the Spiegel EG's that were factory d&t, and the Weaver T-7 side mounts. Earlier back to the 1899's you could order different scopes and mounts from the factory.

Here's the picture I was looking for. It's the first deer I shot with the 250 R. I really don't remember it ever not haveing a scope on it, Joe.

99R in 358, Boss Code 6H that some say date it to 1956 and the first year that caliber was offered.
It's not a safe queen either, gets hunted most falls.

My photography skills aren't my strong suit, but my R is a real fine piece. Yea, its a .308 and probably is my best shooting 99.

studs, small tang crack, odd thinning on the barrel bluing, receiver blue looks OK, plenty of nicks and bruises in the wood, $375 OBO shipped
