So it has been a while since I have been to the forum, but had to get back on here after visiting the local gun show. I came across a 99F in 284 win. that had the original forearm, but the buttstock looked like it had been replaced and was in bad shape. The bluing looked to be okay and serial number was just over 1,000,000. Seller was asking $1000. Did I miss out on not buying this one? Sorry for the bad pics.

Buttstock looks like it's off of a 99DL, and doesn't look like it fits too well at all at the rear of the receiver.

I'd have passed on that without a second thought.

Thanks for the reply. Only reason I had to ask is that I have never come across a 99 in 284 before. How common/ uncommon are they? Looks like the were manufactured for around 15 years or so.

Or maybe it actually was a DL that he mistook for an F.

BTW, why is that lady so angry in the second picture?
Posted By: Calhoun Re: 99 F in 284 Win - 01/14/13
I was presuming that Z_Mac was calling it a 99F because he read 99F on the barrel.. but maybe not, it looks like the checkering style matches between forearm/buttstock so it might be a DL.

Regardless.. with that stock fit I'd have passed.

Z_Mac, they are uncommon and very popular, and $1000 definitely isn't out of range for one. But that's if it's in good shape, tack on problems and price goes down..

I was at the show....... You did good not buying it. The guy thinks his [bleep] is gold. You kept yourself from getting tooken.

The woman is upset because all the AR clips are gone.

Pretty blurry but it looks like the green tag is labeled 99M, I think it's a legit DL.

It is, but the condition is not as nice as the pics might indicate.

It is a rotary magazine .284?
Posted By: mad_dog Re: 99 F in 284 Win - 01/15/13
Yep, a DL would be a rotary.

Looks like a post 65 DL to me. 65 would have had that double diamond checkering.

If would have had cut checkering, would have gone home with me.

Things being what they are...I'd have left it there without even a second thought.

Yes it is.

Z Mac, I know where there is a tang safety 284 if your interested.
Posted By: 99guy Re: 99 F in 284 Win - 01/15/13
Ummm......every 284 has a tang safety.
Posted By: Jericho Re: 99 F in 284 Win - 01/15/13
Didnt know that 99guy, I believe this one is a DL.
Posted By: Calhoun Re: 99 F in 284 Win - 01/15/13
Here's a 1966 99DL in 284, different checkering style. I was guessing that one to be an early one given the serial number (1,0xx,xxx would be 1965).

I'm always looking for my cousin. He is always looking for good 99's and I know he does not have one in 284.

300Jimmy - Do you plan on going to the show on Feb 2&3?

Thanks again for all the input everyone!

Example of Double Diamond checkering.......1965

There are also 2 diamonds checkered into the bottom of the forearm....which you can't see here. 50 years from now these will probably be worth a fortune as they only made them one year. Course most of us will long be dead.

Just sayin

That's the same checkering as the one he shows..

Ah.....so it is.

I did not see that until I went back and looked close.

I don't want to make you feel bad...but I bought my 99F .284 in 1978 from a pawn shop in SLC for $75.00. At the time I was working in retail and the store had a bunch of Winchester 284 ammo that wasn't selling. My boss sold it all to me for $1.00 a box just to get it off the inventory. 30+ boxes of it.

The only way a guy can feel anything but bad about the story being told is if you are the one telling the story.
