So it has been a while since I have been to the forum, but had to get back on here after visiting the local gun show. I came across a 99F in 284 win. that had the original forearm, but the buttstock looked like it had been replaced and was in bad shape. The bluing looked to be okay and serial number was just over 1,000,000. Seller was asking $1000. Did I miss out on not buying this one? Sorry for the bad pics.

Buttstock looks like it's off of a 99DL, and doesn't look like it fits too well at all at the rear of the receiver.
I'd have passed on that without a second thought.

Thanks for the reply. Only reason I had to ask is that I have never come across a 99 in 284 before. How common/ uncommon are they? Looks like the were manufactured for around 15 years or so.

Or maybe it actually was a DL that he mistook for an F.
BTW, why is that lady so angry in the second picture?

I was presuming that Z_Mac was calling it a 99F because he read 99F on the barrel.. but maybe not, it looks like the checkering style matches between forearm/buttstock so it might be a DL.
Regardless.. with that stock fit I'd have passed.
Z_Mac, they are uncommon and very popular, and $1000 definitely isn't out of range for one. But that's if it's in good shape, tack on problems and price goes down..

Pretty blurry but it looks like the green tag is labeled 99M, I think it's a legit DL.

Looks like a post 65 DL to me. 65 would have had that double diamond checkering.
If would have had cut checkering, would have gone home with me.
Things being what they are...I'd have left it there without even a second thought.

Here's a 1966 99DL in 284, different checkering style. I was guessing that one to be an early one given the serial number (1,0xx,xxx would be 1965).

I'm always looking for my cousin. He is always looking for good 99's and I know he does not have one in 284.
300Jimmy - Do you plan on going to the show on Feb 2&3?
Thanks again for all the input everyone!

Things being what they are...I'd have left it there without even a second thought. Example of Double Diamond checkering.......1965 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=322998752There are also 2 diamonds checkered into the bottom of the forearm....which you can't see here. 50 years from now these will probably be worth a fortune as they only made them one year. Course most of us will long be dead. Just sayin
