FYI saw this posted over at MarlinOwners in case you're interested...Remlin was supposed to run 444's this month but now its been postponed until May..
I'm still Leary buying anything Remlin
Yep makes you wonder why they pushed back the production date. 10-4 Dan if I was in the market with the hots for one I'd spend extra time and search for an older MG or Ballard offering before taking a chance that Remlin got all their ducks in a row!

Their current production guns are now better than the JM guns from right before they switched over. So, just because it has a JM stamp doesn't mean much. And, the early Remlins were bad as well.
Saw on Marlinowners one of the shops that specializes in tuning them won't touch current production. Soft metal, changes to the bolt that make it not function, etc. They may still send "rifles" out the door, but not ones that matter.

This is good info as I am looking for a .444 and I started a post about this. Has Remington had so many complaints they are retooling or redesigning this model. What should a guy look for?
I just handled/examined a bunch of new Remlins tonight and they were terrible. Wood to metal fit could be done more precisely by a 5 year old on an acid trip using a hatchet. Checkering looked like it was done by said 5 year old with the corner of a brick. If there's any finish on that wood I couldn't detect it by sight or by feel. Looks to me as if they slopped some stain on and called it good. No way in hell I'd pay what they're asking for one.

Agreed....I know it hurts guy's feelings that stand staunchly by there old JM models but I have owned many of both old and new Marlin rifles and IMO the current Remlins are better than any of the old JM's, especially the later produced JM's (some of those are pitiful!) to be fair the first Remlins produced with the old worn out Marlin machinery were no better....Since Remington retooled with brand new CNC machines the rifles being produced today are better and more accurate than ever........Hb
VaHillbilly you’re seeing something that I'm not. Just looked at a new REMMarlin at the store to other day, what a poor excuse for a Marlin. Fit and finish and checking sucked. It was setting between a Winchester and a Henry and man did it make those two shine. If Remington can ever make a good, (and that means continuously not a good one here or there) I’ll by one. One should not have to buy a rifle and hope they got a good one.
JM or bust for me

I am new to the Marlin game, got my 1st last week, a 1990 JM 1895SS that was unfired. Smooth as butter action that hadn't been worn in at all and nice workmanship. Wood had very decent grain and no checkering which is what I would prefer. Was contemplating chopping down the barrel to 18" so went to a gunshop to handle a Guide gun to make sure it was what I wanted. The woodwork and general fitting looks OK still at a level beneath the JM but the action was rough and awful, like to the point it felt like it was stuck. Sales guy said they're all like that when new and break in very fast. Cut my finger on the loading port. I am sure a little TLC with a file and stone would fix it but don't know about material differences. Hard to drop $700+ on a piece like that that wold require hours of work to make right.
Now I understand why you guys like the older JM rifles so much. Definitely would pay top dollar for a JM over a Remlin.

You gotta believe it when you see it.

I'll be putting a NIB last run JM 444 on GB soon
Ive got a newer Remlin 45-70 and Id put it up against any JM stamped marlin. Action fit and finish are great on mine. Shoots even better (half moa at 100yards)
