Geez! Anyone look at the prices of used 444 on GB lately? I am still PO'd that Marlin sold out to Remington, and Remington seems to have trashed what is arguably a simple, robust, and reliable platform, given the horror stories I have read lately...
I haven't been tracking them lately, how much are they going up.
I know that a lot of other guns are through the roof so to speak.
'JM' stamped Marlins are bringing a good $$$
Better than money in the bank for sure.....
insanity -- i am seeing prices in the high 600s and even 700s for North Haven guns...
Part of the reason is Marlin no longer shows a 444 in their catalog, so those that want one are scrambling to find one, even a used one. That, plus the fact that Marlin stopped production of the 1895's is driving prices up.
Hmmmmmmmmmm I have a 444P Outfitter
Hmmmmmmmmmm I have a 444P Outfitter
yept me too.......low rds '99 DOM...Leo 1-4x20
and a 1895GS....a 1895M in transit.....'79 1894C...
1894 44ss....all JM stamped.....just call me 'Marlinslut'
grrrrrrrrrrrrr
Interesting......
When Winchester was going out, I bought a lightly used 444 94 Black Shadow and a new 444 Timber rifle. About the same time, I stumbled across a great shape 444P Marlin AKA Outfitter really cheap, so it also found it's way home. That was about 8 years ago & I have never shot any of the 3. Now I am sitting on a gold mine of sorts. I had planned to start using them, but with Remington messing the Marlins up & dropping the 444, who knows. Sad to see Marlin going down the tubes with the Remington purchase. Great rifles.
My 444T is the fifth one from the left, these are all MARLINS (NOT! ANY Remlins) and my 39M, 1894 .25-20, 1894C .357 and 1895M 450 Marlin have been acquired since this photo was taken.
Who's your Daddy!
Quite the Marlin family pic......
now there is a Marlin hoarder........
Don't panic and feed the speculators---I picked up an excellent JM classic (with a cheap scope) last week for $425
If we refuse to buy rifles at the crazy speculative prices the prices will come down.
Win 94's in 444 have been fluctuating wildly for months now and are beginning to come down in price now that the "dumb money" has been spent.
Marlin turned out thousands and they haven't disappeared.
Hey Dogger
There's a real nice Win 94 444 right now on Gunbroker about to go for around $500. Thats a fair price---I wonder what the guys that paid $1000 during the feeding frenzy are thinking right about now!!!
lol, thanks Heavybullets... but I am about two months late to your post...
picked this one up today 444s, made 1980. Been hunted so has some handling marks on the stock etc- marlin leather sling - dont know if i want to put a 1-4 on it or leave it open sites
I'd have to go at least with a peep. I'm trying (and liking) a Burris FastFire II on my Guide gun.
I had a .444 just like that. Like the .45-70, it puts a pure smack on game.

Nice grab on arguably the best production period to buy! Have fun!
Thanks, Tom
I've got a 444s made in 1981 and ditto what Tom said. They don't make em like that anymore.
I bought this one earlier this year. It's a 1965 gun, customized by John Gallagher.
Warhawk, very nice!
I went round and round with myself between 444 and 45-70. Eventually I went 45-70, but since I'm a 44 Mag shooter, I have had a few regrets not going 444 just for logistics.
I like the older Marlins, but would prefer the 1/20 twist ballard rifling on the newer 444s.

Thanks, I've had a 45-70 Marlin for about 20 years now. Added a stainless guide gun and a Browning 1886 more recently. I've killed a few deer and a few hogs with the .45-70 and it certainly does the job.
But I'm a .44 Mag shooter, and just couldn't resist getting a .444. Now that I have this cusom 444 I have sent off a check for a stainless 444 XLR and am thinking about having one of my 30-30s rebored to .444 by Jess at
www.35caliber.comThe XLR has the 1:20 twist, and that's a big reason I bought it. The older gun may not shoot heavy bullets well, but I'll bet the XLR does. And the rebored gun can be any twist rate I want (I would specify a 1:20 twist).

Very slick setup. Love the button mag. I have a 444 in layaway at a local porn shop. Would really like to do trimming on it.

Wow....nice snag.
Doc
Bought mine from a campfire member over a year ago and hadn't regretted it yet.A great shooter it is with cast bullets and ballard barrel.. not gonna let this one go like the one I did years ago!

Flyboy,
That nice lumber on your 444.
Doc
Check out the price and availability of brass before you pick up a .444. Brass is bringing about a buck each, *IF* you can find any. I got lucky and found a guy getting out of the .444 business and bought him out.

Gorgeous Marlin, one of the nicest I've ever seen.
I went through hell to get mine!
Not a remlin either.
Nice rifle I wonder what it costs?
Congratulations on finding a .444. I know you were looking for one for awhile.
I carried a .444 Marlin in Alaska while working on the mainland in SE. It was hard to find the right bullets in those days for handloading. I sold mine for about $250 back in around 2000. I miss the gun, and would like a .45-70 this time. What bullets work well for heavy boned animals for the .444?:
PPine,
I think that most folks would say that the hardcast models are the best. I say that based solely on the articles I have read from others who have tested them extensively. I am mostly interested in shooting whitetails and possibly a black bear.
Found a box of the discontinued 250 grain Nosler Partitions on a store's shelf today. Still thinking hard on grabbing those. I have a suspicion that they might fill the bill for me.
They would as is the 265 Hornady.
And one more bullet I like in the trip-4 is the 270 Speer.
300gr Speer UC and 300gr Hornady XTP have been very accurate as well in mine.
BCSteve, I know it's not the same bullet, but I use the 300 grain UniCor in my .45-70, and if anything, the .429 version would be better, having a little more sectional density.
Nonetheless, the .458 version is a helluva bullet.
For me, the 300gr XTP shoots very well, and the 270 Deep Curl / Gold Dot right behind it. Something in me tells me the Gold Dot is a better bullet, but the few things I have killed with the 300 XTP have been deaded just fine.
Pissed I sold mine last year!
