How to tell if a marlin 45/70 is pre Remington???
thanks
It'll have a JM proof mark on the right side of the barrel, just ahead of the receiver. REM = Remington
You can also tell by the serial number. Go to the Marlin Owners Forum and search around. There is a link to a SN chart somewhere.

Thanks Paul.
I saw the chart and found it confusing.
Possible cause of the format changes to computer.
JM = pre Remington??? That is easy.
I believe the RemLins have a prefix of RM
Look at the S/N...for example # 16053xxx 1984 mfg date
subtract 16 from 100...or just look for the 'JM' stamp
