How to tell if a marlin 45/70 is pre Remington???

It'll have a JM proof mark on the right side of the barrel, just ahead of the receiver. REM = Remington

You can also tell by the serial number. Go to the Marlin Owners Forum and search around. There is a link to a SN chart somewhere.

I saw the chart and found it confusing.
Possible cause of the format changes to computer.

JM = pre Remington??? That is easy.

I believe the RemLins have a prefix of RM

Look at the S/N...for example # 16053xxx 1984 mfg date

subtract 16 from 100...or just look for the 'JM' stamp
