Just for fun....lol... What do you think is a better elk rifle?
What bullet would you go with?
160 Partition in a .270 Win. But I hunt with a .264 Win, which is basically a .257 Weatherby, so I'm kind of conradicting myself.
ok so far thats 2votes for 270Win and no votes yet for the 257Roy... I'm thinken the 270 mite win this.
Maybe I should have asked 308Win vs 257Roy....
I prefer the 270 but have used the 257 Wby and would have no issues in using it day in and day out for elk.
If one builds they can do a nice light 257 Wby, but other than building there isn't a lot of lighterweight options. If I had to do a 257 Wby I'd grab a 700 and wrap a Ti take off around it. Then it'd have the weight out front that I like and would still be fairly lightweight.
Bottom line, either round is fine with me as long as I can get it in a rifle I like to shoot and carry.

I'm not convinced the 257 packs the punch on big stuff..
Mike, it seems to me I read somewhere that somebody hunted and killed cape buffalo with that 257wby...
My Dads bread and butter cartridge since 1968.I've seen tons of moose shot with that combo. It doesn't drop them like a 7mm 30 cal ect.Never has..I'm not impressed with it on large game to say the least.
I find it interesting that you say you're not convinced that the 257 packs enough punch in yet you say 270 with a 130 TSX.
This is only my experience but to me a 270/130 combo will run in the 3100 give or take range. And the 257 Wby will run a 120 to 3200 with no problemo.
Bottom line, my experience has taught me that there's not much diff tween the two.
Thoughts as to why you'd say a 270/130 but that the 257 isn't packing enough punch?
Thx

The 270 wasn't my first pick either.I don't trust the 257 on anything larger than deer.Thats just me.
Gothca, I could and have used both. Has your Dad been using the 257 or the 270 for the many years?
At this time I like my 338/06 on a light rifle and my 7 Mashburn for the more open country.

Sorry Mark.My Dad uses the 257 Roy.
I'm glad we can all agree that the 325WSM is the bestest deer/elk round ever.....
Chane that to "fat bastard" aka my 338 wsm and you've got my agreement..
Dober
ok ok "fat bastard" can get the honorable mention as runner up to the 8mm WSM...
I'm glad we can all agree that the 325WSM is the bestest deer/elk round ever.....
8 Mag guy here Sorry Bud.
we all know what u do with 8 mag brass Mike....lol..
So true.I'm a neck downer.
Yeah turn it into 340 brass...

I like both rounds and either would work on elk with the right bullet. However, I'd pick the .270Win. if I had to use the .275R in a Weatherby rifle. I just haven't been able to make peace with the Weatherby style stock.
I own both, and would lean to the 270 just for a slightly heavier slug.
For elk I would choose the .270 Win every time. With 150g bullets.
Killed a pile of elk with the 270 and 150 grainers......
Casey
In this comparison I favor the 270 with 150 or 160 NP's for critters in elk size hides.
Taken with a .257 Weatherby at 385 yards...120gr partition.
This one was taken with a .270 at 225 yards...130gr partition.
Either will work fine if you place your shots well...
Nice pics Pat! 4 some reason or another the first bull (and I love that bull by the way) looks like it fell in less than an elk packing friendly spot...

I agree with that statement... but I am a diehard 270 fan.
So I would choose a 270.
In reality, my 338-06 would probably get the nod.
.270...now compare throw in the .270 Wby, 150 grain NPs, and have at it.
Both will do the job, but I personally would choose... neither.
In my book, bigger critters deserve bigger bullets. To paraphrase the Keithian hypothesis, with some Capstick topspin, if you're fixin' to put a hole in something, make it a hole to remember.
True confessions - my preferred elk rifles all begin with "3", and my favorite with "33".
6.5 x284 is more then just a great paper puncher its a great hunting cailber.
I really like both; however, if I had to choose just one it would be the 270 Win because it will handle heavier projectiles if needed.
Lou
Own them both, love them both but if elk were on the menu, I would be carrying the bigger bullet...
having said that, my 300 wsm would be preferable.
what is the gun used for? the two are both proven elk killers. if it was gonna be a open country speed goat and dog zapper I would lean to the 257 if you were gonna just hunt elk I would think 270. having used both with equal results I would just grab one and go.
ps, my 257 killed elk died to the trauma from a 100gr tsx tearing through (yes through) at 350 odd yds. I have the utmost confidence in them because I shoot it a bunch.
that last line^^^^^is more important then the difference of the thickness of a piece of paper between two bullets.
270 win and 150gr partitions.
Amazing what a difference 1/50th of an inch and 2% of an ounce in bullet weight can (theoretically) make.
mule deer - heck, almost every argument/opinion one reads here is "theoretical", don't you think?
I can't believe this made it into the elk forum.
Everyone knows that a .270 Win will just pencil in without expanding and a .257 Roy will disintegrate before it gets through the armored skin...
You can only kill elk with 7mm and larger bullets or they don't bleed.
I think the .270 has pretty much been proving to work on elk by countless numbers of hunters, the .257 would work but not as well as it or the .270 should either.
