I like both rounds and either would work on elk with the right bullet. However, I'd pick the .270Win. if I had to use the .275R in a Weatherby rifle. I just haven't been able to make peace with the Weatherby style stock.

I own both, and would lean to the 270 just for a slightly heavier slug.

For elk I would choose the .270 Win every time. With 150g bullets.

Killed a pile of elk with the 270 and 150 grainers......

In this comparison I favor the 270 with 150 or 160 NP's for critters in elk size hides.

Taken with a .257 Weatherby at 385 yards...120gr partition.

This one was taken with a .270 at 225 yards...130gr partition.
Either will work fine if you place your shots well...

Nice pics Pat! 4 some reason or another the first bull (and I love that bull by the way) looks like it fell in less than an elk packing friendly spot... grin

I agree with that statement... but I am a diehard 270 fan.
So I would choose a 270.

In reality, my 338-06 would probably get the nod.

.270...now compare throw in the .270 Wby, 150 grain NPs, and have at it.

Both will do the job, but I personally would choose... neither.

In my book, bigger critters deserve bigger bullets. To paraphrase the Keithian hypothesis, with some Capstick topspin, if you're fixin' to put a hole in something, make it a hole to remember.

I really like both; however, if I had to choose just one it would be the 270 Win because it will handle heavier projectiles if needed.

Own them both, love them both but if elk were on the menu, I would be carrying the bigger bullet...

having said that, my 300 wsm would be preferable.

what is the gun used for? the two are both proven elk killers. if it was gonna be a open country speed goat and dog zapper I would lean to the 257 if you were gonna just hunt elk I would think 270. having used both with equal results I would just grab one and go.

ps, my 257 killed elk died to the trauma from a 100gr tsx tearing through (yes through) at 350 odd yds. I have the utmost confidence in them because I shoot it a bunch.

that last line^^^^^is more important then the difference of the thickness of a piece of paper between two bullets.

Amazing what a difference 1/50th of an inch and 2% of an ounce in bullet weight can (theoretically) make.

I can't believe this made it into the elk forum.

Everyone knows that a .270 Win will just pencil in without expanding and a .257 Roy will disintegrate before it gets through the armored skin...

You can only kill elk with 7mm and larger bullets or they don't bleed. grin
