<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
Mine kind of rifle. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Nice Rifle, especially the loads, those have to hit hard and get the message across on impact!
Could you give me a link and some details on the Dura-Coat?
Great looking rig, I like the stock.

What's there not to like?
IT AIN'T MINE!!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
What is there not to like? Maybe just the recoil- Ouch!!
I like the rifle ALOT!
How long is your bbl? That's seems quite abit faster than any other 250PT load I've seen published. (Not tryin to rain on your parade, just curious as a .338 WIn is the only big game rifle I own)
Thank you for the replys.....I have found the 338 to be a total utility tool. This rifle shoots everything under moa from 180s to 250s. This is an out of the box rifle, no work done to it.
It does have some buck to it and it does hurt shooting the 250s off the bench so needless to say I don't shoot it a whole lot. I found a 180 load that shoots POI with the 250s so that helps with offhand practice as well.
Magnum61; I apologize, I dont have a URL link for Lauer Dura Coat at this time. I do buy it from them and apply it myself. I made an oven from a propane tank and heat it up to 350 degrees for 10 or 15 minutes for application. I really like Dura Coat over the other coatings as it is a true coating and not a lubricant like teflon or KG.
Pointer; Good question, I have a 24" barrel and would not want it any longer. I have debated on wither to cut off another 2"
off of it as I don't think I would lose that much velocity to make a difference. I think the rifle may balance just a hair better and
function quicker for "pass shooting" in the thick of which 70% of my hunting take place.
In regards to the speed of the 250's, well, I've been dabated on it in the past here. I started at 76 grains and worked up without any classic signs and my Norma brass just keeps up with the load just fine. Six loadings (using a slow lot of RL25) and still going. It works for me. If I thought I was over 65K I would back off.
Well if you could bring that group a little tighter you might have a decent rifle for elk <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.
mine shoots the 200, 225 and 250 hornadys, as well as 210 partitons pretty similar to that but i use R19, may have to try the 25 always figured it great for my 7mmRUM but a bit slow for my .338
I use N160 for the 225s and 760 for the 180s.
I've had a difficult time finding a good load for some
210 TSX's. Best I can come up with is a load just under 2"
Anybody here have a favorite powder or combo for the
210 TSX?
Thanks
SU,
Darn nice rifle though I'm a bit late chiming in. I hope it serves you well and slay a big one for me with it!
MtnHtr
Thanks!!!
I hope to get a big one!
I'm applying for hunts for WA now as we speak....
Very nice rifle!! Wow!
Huntr
Nicely done, SU35. I like that rifle.
Thanks for not taking offense. Mine's a box stock Ruger MKII SS/Lam with the 24" bbl. So far nothing but 200gr BTs have been down the tube, but I've not hunted anything larger than cow elk, for which the bullet was more than adequate! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> If I can get them to shoot, I'm planning on trying the 210gr Partitions or XXX this year. I too have contemplated cropping 2" off the bbl, but this rifle has quite a bit of sentimental value. If do decide to do that I'm going to change out stock with a High Tech to get closer to the weight of yours. It got pretty heavy on day three in WY last year.
I love 200 BTs as mine shoots them just as well as my 250 NPs with a whole lot less recoil. I have load that churns out just 2,800 fps with IMR 4064 and for a 338 that is a pleasent load on the shoulder. I'm tempted to use them as I understand them to be very good game bullet. I think this would be a very good Black Bear load. I could speed them up a bit and not feel robbed if I used them instead of the 210 NP on elk. The only reason I would add speed is to give me some more distance for those cross drainage shots.
I've used the 200gr BT on one cow elk and one doe pronghorn. In both cases the bullet was more than up to the task. I'll run with it this year unless I get a chance to have a bull tag, then I want something with more (?) penetration as I don't want to have to pass on a raking shot on a bull.
I'd guess that 4064 load would be about perfect on deer/lopes! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Boy I am glad that BalTip didn't fail on that goat.
Are you coming up to town soon? Perhaps we can meet.
Elk Medicine????? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />
Matthews Outback driving a carbon shaft with a Steelforce head! Sweet! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Nice setup!
All you need to complete the "Elk Medicine" is a teaspoon of suger on the morning of the hunt. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
SU35,
I really like the Post and Duplex recticle, much more than the German #4 or the heavey duplex. I only have found the Post and Duplex offered in the new 6x36 FII.
Who installed the Post and Duplex in your 6x42?
GB
GB,
I had Leupold do it for me at an extra cost.
And yes, I do like it very well, in a way its like looking over
magnified iron sights. I would think it would be a great reticle for DG, for fast shots on running game it picks things up pretty quick. It also does very well at canyon shooting, which btw is a favorite past time of mine, makes for great pracitce. Nothing like shooting foot size rocks at 5 and 600 yards with heavy 338 bullets. They can smack em with a very cool sound. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Sshhheeeesshh Bob, isn't your house running out of gun rooms yet?? Another tackdriver. I put in for cow in units 9 and 10. Did you put in for AZ elk?
Jeff, I had to pass this year on AZ elk. Next year I'll be in for sure. I think I might even have Spike talked into putting in as well.
Units 9 or 10 would be a clean sweep for cow elk.
btw, was in Prescott last Sunday for one day, visited the folks. I know where my heart is....
Good to hear from you.
What a beauty!!! You really know how to have 'em pose for the camera..... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
Easy there big fella, before you get all worked up. That is a Remington, you wouldn't want that model 70 to think you were lusting after another rifle. But it is good to see you recognize greatness. 338
even have Spike talked into putting in as well.
.......................yeah, you about broke my arm, huh? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
(When are we going to pop some milk jugs, I've got about a billion saved up for you in the backyard).
