Few more groceries for the winter, very thankful for that.

Montucky .308, 155 Scenar, 505 yards...

This probably ain't the best idea but I wasn't about to make 2 trips for a flat-head.

I'd like to give a shoutout to my buddy starsky for being my moral support center from the couch in Nebraska.

Nice work all around!
That is a heck of a pack out. Hope it was short.

Way to go Tanner! Dang, I am still a few weeks away from my cow hunt, time is crawling!
Posted By: smokepole Re: Late Colorado Cow... - 12/13/14
One trip, that is badass, you a Sherpa or something? Congrats to Starsky too.
Posted By: swampshooter Re: Late Colorado Cow... - 12/13/14
Nice elk, she'll eat much better than a bull. Good shooting.
Posted By: starsky Re: Late Colorado Cow... - 12/13/14
You couldn't have done it without me.
Posted By: 30338 Re: Late Colorado Cow... - 12/13/14
Dibs on the rifle if you didn't sell to a hippie on the trail. Good shooting Tanner.

Wasn't short enough...grin. About 2 miles, so it could have been a lot worse.

Worst part of the whole ordeal was forgetting to pick up my piece of Lapua brass, and then not being able to track it down!

So, what did you think of the 84M Montana as a mtn hunting rifle? Pretty ideal to me!
Posted By: Tanner Re: Late Colorado Cow... - 12/14/14
It's an awesome little rifle. I think Kimber knocked the 84M out of the park.

Good looking pack too. Bikini frame or which one is that? Need to wear out my Timberline 2, but it has a lot of life left in it.

That's the Duplex. Highcamp 4800 bag, with a few pouches on it. Really liking the setup... Hauls weight pretty darn well...grin

Congrats on the fine groceries, Tanner!

Years ago, had a grizzled old WY outfitter (my campsite neighbor) see me coming off the mountain with a similarly loaded pack. He side-stepped his quarter horse off the trail, leaned on the saddle horn as the leather protested the shift, fingered the brim of his hat back a bit, spit some tobacco juice and declared, "We've got horses for what your doin'." I laughed and apologized for not stopping to chat for fear of getting stuck....

Tanner. Nice cow! Mind me asking how much weight you packed out.?
Posted By: Tanner Re: Late Colorado Cow... - 12/14/14
Wish I wasn't allergic to horses!

Sako, it wasn't outlandish by any means; I think many folks overestimate the weight of elk fairly often.

I weighed my pack on a bathroom scale at home and it was a bit under 110lbs.

Congrat's!
Good job Tanner.... You may want to have your RF checked out... Now way you dropped that bitch at 500+ with a POS 308 using a paper punching bullet...

It just cain't be done...

Congrats...

You're being a bit modest - having hauled a couple packs loaded like that, I guarantee it sucked. Its OK to say that wink

I'm also surprised the 308/155 bullet didn't bounce off. Did the elk know you were stunt shooting? <G>
Posted By: bigswede358 Re: Late Colorado Cow... - 12/14/14
Nicely done Tanner.
When they first came out years ago I had a Montucky in 325 that was the cause of my worst pack out. Those light rifles have a way of doing that.
Posted By: SLM Re: Late Colorado Cow... - 12/14/14
Nice....Congrats.

The 308 is UBER.

EXCEllen's work Tanner; you'RE a machine!

Shazaam!

Nice! December groceries are the best!
One trip? Boned quarters and loins, no rib or neck?
Posted By: Tanner Re: Late Colorado Cow... - 12/17/14
Boned quarters, backstraps, loins... I don't mess with neck meat or rib meat much though I probably ought to.

Cool Tuner.

Tasty vittles.

I need one of those Montuckys. If they would just put the 260 into the regular lineup. I could slum an '08 tho.

I am a big 308 fan, but I'm having thoughts of this one becoming a .260, as well....

110 lbs?

You debone everything?

And I agree with the others, a Kifaru, a 155 grain .30 cal, in Colorado, a dead Elk, You out in the cold,

Pure fiction.

and fix your typo, You forget the decimal in the 50.5 yards..
Posted By: Tanner Re: Late Colorado Cow... - 12/20/14
Deboned, yes sir...

Posted By: Ghostwalker Re: Late Colorado Cow... - 12/21/14
Love stories like this..dependable cartridge, good shooting and some good eating to boot. Congrats on the elk.

Your 110 is just surprising to me I guess. Bulls/Cows are different sizes obviously, but I wouldn't expect that much difference,

Hide and Bone do make a diff, And you fit it all in a 4500 Kifaru?

Good going Tanner! Great post and pics! And for anyone who hasn't humped a heavy pack of meat out (regardless of how good the pack is) they don't understand what you just did. Good stuff!

http://www.backcountrychronicles.com/elk-pack-out-weight/

Looks like Tanner shot about a 1.5 yr old cow, and minus the neck and rib meat would be right around 110 pounds. Tender vittles indeed and for a $41 tag, pretty cheap other than sweat equity. CO does not require rib meat or neck meat to come out, I never liked rib meat anyway.
Nice work.. It will eat well.
Right on buddy.

Congrats Tanner on the supply of meat. Now about that miserable old .308 Montana. Oops, I guess I shouldn't talk!

I shot a antlerless elk in ML season about the same age. I say antlerless as it was a bull , but had no horns an no testicles. Processed meat was real close to the chart 110-120 lbs. Then I shot a small 5X in 2 rifle season that was maybe 2&1/2 years old, not more than 3 and it was close to the chart too. Both are exception eating I process all my own meat. I have found once you start to shoot cow elk in the real late seasons ,like early January, meat quality starts to deteriorate when they start to use up some of their body fat.

LOL. My buddies think I'm crazy when I've got an animal down and I walk in circles muttering to myself looking for my ejected brass.

Congrats, buddy! It'll be a tasty winter!

We boned out 3 antler less elk this year (two 5-7 yo cows and a yearling bull), and the cows each yielded 175-180 lbs including rib meat, neck meat, and a chunk of liver. The yearling bull was 78 lbs.

Nice to see that .308/155 Skinner combo stacking the meat! What was bullet performance like?
Posted By: Tanner Re: Late Colorado Cow... - 12/26/14
I can't really tell ya' too much about what the bullet did Jordan, as I did not get into the chest cavity at all (gutless). I know that it exited, and the cow died fairly quick. I'm assuming it souped up the vital pretty good as she did not make it far.

I'll gut the next one and see what the heck... Although the Montana is shooting 165 NBTs really well too!
