Could you tell me about your gnarly looking Marlin you're holding next to the .450 AR in the mag I saw on the newstand today?
Mostly curious about the red and black coatings.
Also, is that one of your favorite 2.5X Leupolds on the AR? I'm thinking about testing one as a primary optic for a patrol carbine.
Thanks,
Dan

I would imagine you've caught him right in the thick of things. Things may settle down a bit after bear season - or not.

Yup!....he's most likely in the bear bushes until late May.

Copy that. Thought about it right after I pressed send, but thought...maybe he's got a Verizon Air Card with a satellite uplink...

Dan, That Marlin is my wife's 45-70 that started out as a full sized rifle but I chopped into an early version of a guide gun. The red coating is Rustoleum metal primer ( which works very well by the way) and the black on the stock is wing walk material from an aircraft supply shop.
The scope on the 500 Beowulf is one of my old 2 1/2 Leupold compacts- which fit my purposes very well and are amazingly tough.

Phil, I figured you were out in the field and hadn't looked back here til I saw you post on another thread.
Thanks for the answer. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a used 2.5 Leupy on here.
We're getting a carbine program going at my agency and we're requiring good optics for those officers who want to buy their own.
With a number of officers over 40 a low-powered magnified optic seems like a good idea, but nobody has the dough for a Schmidt & Bender CQB...the Leupold seems like a good idea, particularly for dayshift guys.

Any idea what other brands of older fixed low power scopes might work for your situation? Maybe someone has something that would work for you.

what is a fair price for a leupy fixed 2.5x in decent shape? I scored a minty one for about $150 IIRC a few years back on FleaBay. Had to find some extension rings to make the fit right on my M70.

Cold Case, I'm sure Leupold works with agencies. Have your procurement give them a call.

Why'd you mount it so far back, it has 5" of eye releif?
I wished I'd gotten a second one, didn't know they no longer make em. I got mine from premier reticles, had them fit click turrets and a 4a reticle. Great little scope, that lives on my 350 rem mag.

what is a fair price for a leupy fixed 2.5x in decent shape? Depending on the vintage anywhere from $150 to $250. I usually get them for around $150 if they're gloss M8's; the last matte ultralight 2.5 I bought I gave $235 for and considered it a deal. They're wonderful scopes and are my first choice if my primary concern is not altering the rifle's balance. I had one on a drilling for just that purpose, shooting a round of sporting clays with a low powered scope was an interesting experience

Why'd you mount it so far back, it has 5" of eye releif? Seems to work o.k. where it's at. Haven't measured the eye relief. I could swap the extension ring the the rear base location and flip it around. Can't seem the get a scope cover to work well on the objective end the way it's set up. The goofy notch in the stock is a cutout for an FP aperature sight which I may just go back to cuz I like it so much. For spring bear hunting I like a scope. For fall deer hunting in the rain/snain, I like the shooting irons.

It works for you, I was just wondering as I had it mounted on a 98 mauser, and had no problems with std rings and bases, though the forward ring was a bit over the gold ring. I use buttler creek flip up caps and the work well. It is a great little scope, taught me you don't need much magnification to shoot well as both the 350 rigby and 350 rem mag shoot sub moa with that scope.

Phil,
May check what Leupold does for individual officer purchases...agency won't be buying everybody optics in the current economic doldrums.
Matter of fact I oughta take a look at Burris as I just found out they have a good LE discount.
Main reason I'm back is I saw another intriguing pic of your working .458 at Books A Million yesterday, but that will be a new thread.
