After re beading J. Barnesses recent article on Ultra Bore Coat, I decided to try this product out on several of my rifles. I have the follwing two questions on Ultra Bore Coat (UBC):
1. New rifle, hasn't been broken in yet (I have not fired it yet), however I have had the chamber and barrel lapped.
Q: Can I apply the UBC now (after further cleaning); or should I fire the five to ten rounds (for supposedly breaking it in), clean it and then apply the UBC?
2. Older rifle, shoots moly coated rounds best. After cleaning per instructions, and applying UBC per instructions, my question is:
Q: Any problems if I use moly coated bullets after UBC install? Are UBC treated barrels affected by the moly bullets?
Gracias!

1) You can apply UBC anytime you want. In my experience it will do the most good in newer barrels. That's pretty much the point, to fill in the imperfections of the bore and thus smooth the surface. Personally, I wouldn't bother doing any extra work (such as lapping) to a bore I planned to UBC.
2) The big point of UBC is to prevent copper-fouling of the bore. That is also the main point of moly, but in my experience UBC is better at it. Plus it only takes one UBC application to the bore for the lifetime of the barrel, instead of the expense and bother of applying moly to every bullet you shoot.
On the other hand, I have never shot a moly-coated bullet down a UBC's barrel, so don't know what the result would be. If you're really addicted to moly, then go ahead. But is seems like a belt-plus-suspenders deal to me.

Mule Deer,
Thanks!
I am trying to get away from moly. I will UBC on the older rifle and see if I can get the uncoated bullets to shoot as accuractely as the moly coated ones.

I have shot moly as well as non-moly bullets through my UBC'd .22-250 interchangeably, and there is no problem at all. After several hundred rounds, the bore was no harder to clean than when I use straight naked bullets.

no problem with moly.
But the last thing I did was coat my hunting bullets with UBC also.... that worked fine too and I have an overbore 7mm and its yet to show ANY sign of copper at all after about 100 rounds since new. And I'd expected to clean that tube every 20-30 rounds or so.

I have an '03 Springfield with a 808*** serial #. It has the original 4 groove barrel. It was sporterized sometime ago. I have added Timney trigger, speedlock and a bedded aftermarket stock. It will shoot 1 1/4" five shot groups. After 20 or so rounds the groups start opening up. I have no idea how many rounds have gone through it. I am not replacing the barrel. Would an Ultra Bore Coat treatment be wortwhile? To preserve the accuracy? Just wondering.

OO just don't use moly to cure the UBC cure it with jacketed bullets. After the first 15 rounds you can run all the moly you want to.
