This is a good Black Wildebeest, taken a couple of weeks ago in the mountains of the Eastern Cape. A ranged 275 yd. shot off the sticks dropped him like a stone. Used my Ruger Hawkeye African .375 Ruger, with Barnes 250 gr. TTSX bullet. Exit hole shown, entrance was a few inches lower on the shoulder. At first, I had only intended to do a European mount, but after seeing the animal up close, changed my mind- it will be a shoulder mount.

I have one that my wife says is too ugly to be out so I had to hang in it the hall wall sorta out of sight next to the ugly warthog. They came from John's collection.

Nice one!
Oddly enough, despite their weird looks, black wildebeest taste very good. In fact I know several PH's who prefer them to almost any other plains game, and the retired owner/chef of a now-closed top-flight restaurant in Joburg who really liked them as well. He particularly enjoyed surprising customers with delicious wildebeest filets!

I must have done it wrong. I remember black wildebeest as one of two ( the other was waterbuck) critters I didn't like over there.Just me I guess. ( except on the waterbuck.) JB: Do you remember the Waterbuck Cordon Bleu? The only thing Ona fixed that I didn't care fortasted like Urinal Cake Cordon Bleu.

JB,
We had steaks from my Wildebeest while in camp- it was excellent. Also had Springbok, and Mtn. Reedbuck. All of it was great table fare, for sure.

BH, it's the only PG species I passed on. You have a very nice specimen; maybe as good as they get.
I just didn't cotton to them. Perhaps my mistake.
Very affective bullet in the 375.

That is a fantastic wildebeest! As for their homely appearance, I found hand a hat on their heads gives them a little panache and makes them presentable in a trophy room .

I think that Black Wildebeest are very cool critters. I never had a doubt that I'd pedestal shoulder mount my first one. He gave me a heckuva hunt too.
On my most recent trip into South Africa last month, I took my best Blue Wildebeest to date, and my PH's wife made a delicious oxtail stew from it. I'm not a huge fan of oxtail stew, but it was very good.
