Barnes' own website says 1:8 or tighter.

Why mess with a 1:9 barrel for 6.5mm?

Depends how cheap, cheap is. I have a 1-9 264 Win but haven’t tried the 127’s in it. If I had a choice I’d likely go 1-7.5 if I were spending money on a gunsmith. If you’re getting it darned near free there are some decent 120’s that’ll work.

I have another 6.5 rem mag, and a pair of 260 rem. that are 1-8 twists and fly that 127 lrx really nicely but just kicking the idea around, might be worth the difference just to get the right barrel.

1:9” twist works fine for cup & core bullets, but you’ll find the 127g LRX is going to be too long for that twist. I have 2 standard 1:9” twist 264WM and one shoots the 142g ABLR stabilised and the other gets o long holes on target. My 1:8” twist 6.5’s have no trouble, so this is also adequate for the 127g LRX.

Cheers.

IMO if a person wants to take advantage of a"Magnum" cartridge you want to shoot the heavier bullets. then you must have the appropriate twist.

I just kinds like the odd calibers, oh sure i have the normal stuff too, but the 6.5 Rem Mag has been dear to me as our my Norma mags, i was shooting 120 grain TTSX bullets then got a smoking deal on the 127 LRX, ran them thru a couple of deer and hogs with dead in the dirt results. In the lower 48 if you put it on or just behind the shoudler of a big texas hog with that grizzly shield in place and you have a bullet exiting thru the other side, I have enough bullet. I have seen some 30 caliber rounds both magnum and std. not go thru that "shielded" area. All about the bullet I guess but i would stick that 127 LRX in the rib cage of most anything. We watched 60 plus hogs get shot out of one blind last year it was a real education on bullets and shot placement.

I think i am leaning toward a new barrel and reduce the variabilities.

I agree. Even the old Carl Gustav with the 6.5x55 had a 1 in 7.8" twist rate. Who would do a 1 in 9"?
