For yotes to deer and even larger game, most this side of 1/4 miles would you use:

2-7x33, 2.5-8x CDS or M1
3-10 CDS/M1

Or the latest NXS 2.5-10 compact? If NF which reticle? Lit or not?

Is the VX-3 is reliable enough in repeatable cranking?

FWIW, Short action rifle....

No need to crank for 1/4 mile.

Why anyone would be cranking for 1/4 mile stuff is beyond me.

I would not hesitate to use any of the above listed scopes.

I'd crank, why not???

Sighted in at 200, even a flat shooter will be 14+" low at 400. I'd personally prefer to hold crosshairs on my target, not hold over unless I have a holdover reticle.

And I've found the 2-7 and the 3.5-10 CDS to be pretty good on repeatability personally.

nxs with MOAR reticle, for shots to 600 yards, an etched turret with a zero stop is your ticket.

I can't speak for the NF but I've ran three CDS's (2.5-8, 4.5-14 and an X2 in 3-9) all over the place and return to zero has been spot on. Truly it's not needed to dial at 400 but it is nice to be able to and hold crosshairs on plus have the ability to stretch it out if you wanted.

I am used to very high velocity with acceptable accuracy so I sight in at 300. That means the highest point of the trajectory is no more than 3" above the line of sight. I can hold on hair to at least 400 yards.

Here is the best reason to go with twisting.

Yes, turrets to align POA~POI. No doubt a Plex/Duplex can dump deer at 400, though for precise placement, shots over 400, or smaller game exact POI is preferred. I dumped a 1/4 miler w mil-dots...so no doubt the ballistic reticle can do good work.

Given time to do so, precise placement preferred.

I usually zero my rifles at 100 yards and I'll admit I've cranked as low as 217 yards. With enough time to do so I don't have any problem with it.

I have both of these scopes 3-10x40 CDS and NXS 2.5-10x42. I like the NF in every way, especially with turret cranking involved.

I have not had a lot of use with the VX-3, just some at the range, but to me the NF is more precise with its adjustments. If money isn't a big factor, the extra piece of mind is worth it to me.

I really like the MOAR reticle. My scope has the digillum, but haven't had to use it.
