The Alaska Legislative Council voted Wednesday to kill its Medicaid expansion lawsuit, after losing its case in Superior Court to Gov. Bill Walker and after a judge ruled that the House could not continue with an appeal to the Alaska Supreme Court on its own without a vote.
In a 5-9 vote, the Senate-House joint council voted down a motion to continue the lawsuit during a brief Wednesday morning meeting held by telephone.
Voting to continue the lawsuit were Sen. Anna MacKinnon, R-Eagle River; Rep. Mike Chenault, the House Speaker and a Nikiski Republican; Rep. Craig Johnson, R-Anchorage; Rep. Charisse Millett, R-Anchorage; and Rep. Mark Neuman, R-Big Lake.
Voting to halt the lawsuit were Council chair Sen. Gary Stevens, R-Kodiak; Sen. Kevin Meyer, the Senate president and an Anchorage Republican; Sen. John Coghill, R-North Pole; Sen. Lyman Hoffman, D-Bethel; Sen. Charlie Huggins, R-Wasilla; Sen. Peter Micciche, R-Soldotna; Rep. Mike Hawker, R-Anchorage; Rep. Bob Herron, D-Bethel; and Rep. Sam Kito III, D-Juneau.
The council had voted in August to sue Gov. Bill Walker over his move to expand Medicaid without the Legislature's approval.
