Last year I messed up on my permit application and drew a whitetail doe that was valid only in an area restricted to muzzle loader or shotgun. I don't own a muzzle loader so I bought a couple boxes of slugs for my Ruger Red Label 12 ga. After the first few shots to see where the slugs were hitting I was seriously debating how bad I wanted to kill a whitetail doe. I ended up filling the tag, but I believe that if a "follow up shot" would've been needed I probably would've went in with a pocket knife. The deer died, but I'm still not sure which one of us got the worst of that ordeal.

I have a Mauser 1996 Straight Pull in 06 that I didn't realize was kicking terribly till I got a Monte Carlo stocked 03-A3 with a thick pad.

I added an inch of spacer and replaced the butt pad that was NOT a recoil pad with a 1" decelerator and she's a kitten.

Stock fit and good pad are where it's at for me. I can honestly say that from the bench that 06 kicked as hard as my .300 Weatherby does.

I have a 30-06 in an echols stock - comfortable gun to shoot.

I have a 1927 Jeffrey in 9.3x62 with a low comb, that bites a bit.

Curios if folks feel there is a macmillan or manners that absorbs recoil really, really well.

I had a 700 Remington in .308 that kicked me a lot harder than my cousin's 700 in .30/06.

All I can figure, is that the longer action pushed the balance point out further, further changing the recoil model, at least in my mind.

Of course, I had three 77R Rugers, one a .243 and the others were .270 and .30/06, both of which kicked less, in my mind, at least, easier than that nasty little .243 seemed to.

After those, I've never really liked, wanted, or got into short-action rifles. The only short-action rifles I care to mess with these days, are on the .378" case head.

I've got a T3 Super light 7mm mag that really surprised me with its manageable recoil. I replaced the pad with a limbsaver before firing the first round, I have to believe that it helps a great deal.

My 30-06 X-Bolt is very comfortable to shoot. My Remington Model Seven in .308 Win. slaps me pretty hard.
One thing I noticed is that my 45-70 Marlin Guide Gun shooting 300 grain bullets over IMR3031 seems to kick harder that the 350 loads over H4895. I wonder if the faster burning 3031 is a little “snappier”?
The worst thing I ever shot was a T/C Contender in 45-70. It ripped the webbing between my thumb and hand and gave me a blood blister on one of my knuckles after 1 shot. All I know is that the bullet went West.

Interesting timing. Just got in from shooting a 6lb 7oz Montana and a 8lb 3oz M70 in Tupperware. Both 270's. Montana was quick, but soft. The M70 was like a punch. Actually pretty surprised at the Montana as it's the first 84L I've had.

Reckon I'm a fanboy now. No bedding, 6x42, Hornady factory 140 BTSP, shot sub MOA. Heading to Sportman's tomorrow to clean out what's left on the shelf.

30-06 Model 70 with an older Mark Bansner "HI-Tech" stock that has a Pachmayr "Decelerator" recoil pad & 3.5-10x40 scope. I can shoot it a lot off a bench without thinking about recoil.

I will have to concur with River Ridge that a contender in 45-70 is like pattin' a mule on the ass.
I've since filled one of my rynite buttstocks with lead shot to about 5 1/2 lbs. and bolt it up when a heavy hitter is in the frame.
My 358 Alpo now has the position of the most disruptive round in town, probably due to one of David White's earlier brakes that has ports of 30 cal. diameter.

Ruger #1 in 470 NE wasn't bad at all. Even shot a couple whitetails with it.

"Maybe an elk one day" rifles?

Confidence?

They like them?

Read some Robert Ruark?

Rifle was on sale/got a deal?

Like pain?

Hand me downs?

Who knows?

If Kimber made a 1:8 243 Win and Walmart stocked the shelves with 105 HPBT's we'd all be carrying one.

Because some people hunt places other than the Southeast and for animals not found there.

There are some odd, funky rifles out there alright. Despite having shot dozens of each i have never run into a 300 magnum that kicked less than a little ,old 270 Winchester.

Back some many years ago I had a 358 norma built on a ruger TS, 20" #2 hart ( or maybe douglas), brown LW stock I guess it was about 6.5lbs, It was a kicker, no so much in how hard, but it seemed to come back very very fast. It was a pleasure to carry, but I just couldn't shoot it well.

Fast forward 30 years, I built nearly the same pattern rifle in 358 win ( substitute a MPI for the Brown). It still kicks a little bit, but I can seem to manage easy enough. Although I am very satisfied with a 200g at 2450.

Beside that original Norma, the only other rifle I detested shooting was the M21 with the AN-PVS-4. It has this rubber eye cup you have to bring you head forward to open, which in my case left about 1" of eye relief. Every time I would shoot it I would get hit by the scope, not to hard,I wouldn't bleed, but I would have a bruise the next day. We would probably shoot a hundred or so rounds a night. How I hated night fire on the M21.

It was something about the way I held the rifle as none of the other snipers had an issue and I had no trouble with the M21 with the normal ART-2.

Jw,
They just don't get too dead.
If a little is good, then a lot is better.
I myself, am a minimalist, the .222 rem mag improved does an awful lot... but it doesn't anchor them like a .444!
I stick to contenders.
