Hi all, this is my first post on your excellent forum. My mom and grandmother are in a bit of a financial pinch and need to sell grandpa's rifles, or at least we need to know how much they are worth. I posted a thread over on THR and some of the very helpful members suggested I ask over here about the value of an old Savage 1899. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=352837What can anyone tell us about this gun, we realize it's a little beat up. Let me know if you need more info or more pics. The SN is 44.3XX. Any help is appreciated.

Yea I know gramps home made sling is lame, and so are the studs. This was not thought of as a collectors piece in my family, and maybe it isn't.
The caliber is .303 Savage

The caliber is .303 Savage Well that puts a different light on it , if Gramps made the sling then it is priceless. Mike

It is worth a lot more to you than somebody else. Therefore, I would try to keep it or at least sell it to somebody within the family, and then try to buy it back later.

Neat rifle. If I had the means,I'd buy it,and hold it for your Sis,till she/you came to your senses. BTW,how old is your sister?
When it comes to choosing friends....I'm at an age where I'd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

If you have old ammo for the Savage in the box,it may be worth as much as the rifle!

Check the gun auction sites.
It does not appear you have gotten much of an answer to your question so far.
Hint: The rifle can probably fetch a few times more than $100.00.

Thanks guys, appreciate the input. I've sent a link to the rest of the family.
This was gramma's hunting rifle back in the day in Montana. There are tons of stories about hunting in my family. Like the time she raced the bear to the cabin door, or the buck that got away, or any number of other tales.
Gramma taught me how to ride a motorcycle and how to cross country ski... she is/was something else!
I don't know how the ding got there, but the rotary mag turns freely. It don't matter, I'm sure we'll end up keeping it.
Great forum here, I'll poke around and see what I can learn.
Thanks again.

Set down with Gramma and write a book or a series of short stories to publish in the local travel magazine, handout newspaper, online whatever. Bound to get more than $400 & keep the gun.
