This morning I went in to the Sporting Goods store to pick up my order of bullets.

The earnest young store clerk person puts the box up on the counter, looks at the carton label, then looks at me, then at the carton label again.

Finally, earnest young store clerk person says: "you do realize these are BULLETS, and not LOADED AMMUNITION, right?". Me: "OMG, REALLY!???"

Meanwhile, my buddy the gun counter manager off to the side is just cracking up.

Finally he steps in and says: "Pud, you would not believe what we had to deal with during the Christmas rush. We finally had to tell everyone to point out the difference between bullets and ammo".

Dark clouds looming....
The stupid is very deep out there.
A similar thing happened to me just the other day. I put my box of 168 grain bullets on the checkout counter and the cashier asked me if I handload. I smiled and said I sure do.
Congratulations on experiencing your first vision of what equality looks like to the liberal democrats. Been in the construction business for 40 +. The last few years have changed my paradigm.

Good luck and shoot straight y'all

Yeah, and most of the time I'm old enough to the grandfather of those that are asking. When they ask for a birth date I tell them 11/11/11 or 12/7/41.
I had a devil of a time once, trying to mail a box of Nosler's to a friend. The lady clerk at the Post office said they couldn't mail "bullets". I said, ma'am, yes you can. You can't mail "cartridges", but, she said, "it says bullets right on the box". I said yes ma'am, that's the part the 'cartridge'" shoots out the barrel, its just copper and lead". After she checked with the Manager, she mailed them. wow.
sad to say but stupid does not care which side of the counter it is on these days.
Sometimes I like to stand and listen to what is said from both sides of the counter. Stupid is not a one way street

So very true.....
At this point I am done saving them from their stupidity. I just smile and sell them whatever they want. Maybe they will learn something.
How about “bulletheads” as on Gunbroker ads.
Local Scheels has a sign with the the bullets stating that they are not loaded ammunition.
They didn’t put that sign up because all their clients are rocket scientists. I’m sure that job is very trying at times. Edk

You must be a real pleasure to be around. Nice power move on minimum wage clerks.

I’d have said, “nope, I’m just gonna throw them really hard.”
Just say- "Yup, and I would buy some powder, primers, brass, and a few other things if you had any of that in stock for a change.... "
Same thing happened to me the last time I bought a box of bullets at a gun store. The funny thing was, it was at Whittakers, a store that is run very professionally, and the clerk was a guy that's been there for years. I'm wondering if this is a thing that has sprung up from the ammo shortage, with some customers wanting ammo so bad, that they'll buy anything that looks like a box of ammo..................which for the record, a box of Hornady 6mm bullets does not. Anyway, I was nice, and told the guy behind the counter that I knew what I was buying. I figured he had to deal with enough crap, that he didn't need any from me.
I haven't bought a new gun in quite a while and have stockpiled my reloading needs for many years, so have very little experience with clerks behind gun store counters. So, when I finally located a pocket pistol I'd been wanting to try out, I immediately went to Academy Sports to get it. I figured I'd likely have to deal with a 'minimum wage dufus' that was relatively clueless. I got the opposite. The young man was a former marine with a concealed carry permit that not only knew firearms and ammo but discussed concealed carry issues very intelligently. Also, Academy's paperwork hoops that a buyer has to deal with were not as big an issue as I expected. The biggest irritation was when they had to have a person escort me to the front door carrying my weapon for me.
Good to hear about Academy, I have not bought one from them in years and to be honest, don't remember anything about their process.
I did buy one from Walmart a couple of years ago, what a pain in the butt.
Really do not see what the issue is. They are just trying to prevent a lot of returns from folks that do not know what they are doing. I would not take offense at being asked. Shows that the clerk does know the difference.
I bet it has something to do with all the newbies buying guns and then buying bullets thinking they have ammo.

Bingo!
There are a lot of uninformed folks who have bought firearms lately because of the lawlessness in our country. Well guess what- we were all clueless at one point in our lives, granted for some of us it was over a half century ago.

Damn funny using the word smart and liberal in the same sentence! That said at least in Washington you can pump your own gas.

You may be right there... likely gotta cross over the Cascades into the Big Empty to find young uns' who've grown up handling guns....
After Sandy Hook I was working the gun counter at the Hixson Academy. I had a guy come to the counter with a box of .22 Hornet ammo and asked if it would work in his 10/22. I can see why the clerks started asking.
Almost all LGS here have put up a sign in the reloading section that says “This is Not Loaded Ammo”. I have no problem with it. Let’s teach the new gun owners correctly. We need as many on our side as we can get.

Agreed!
"These are just bullet heads!"

Damn right!
I was told that the box only had bullets and not loaded ammo too once. The clerk said first, "do you handload"? I said, "only people that want to shoot and have ammo, do". He looked at me funny.
Was going to send a new Shaw barrel to a good friend in another state. Was going to send him the action, too. He
was going to do some work for me. Separately.
Our local post office has a reputation for marginal performance......... a well deserved reputation.

Without the rifle parts, i walked in to the post office and happened to be 'helped' by the 'post mistress'. Our conversation went something like this....

Me: Can i mail a rifle barrel thru the regular postal mail?
She: You cannot mail a firearm thru the mail without a special arrangement.
Me: I will try that again... Can i mail a RIFLE BARREL thru the regular postal mail?
She: Isnt a rifle barrel the same as the rifle?
Me: No. A rifle barrel is a steel pipe. About 2 feet long. No moving parts. No wood attached.
She: I dont know if that is allowed..................
Me: Can i mail a piece of a water pipe thru your mail system?
She: Well, I guess.....
------------------------------------------------
So I did send the barrel thru the regular mail. Sent the action and some other stuff in a different container on a different day. This worked out fine.

I didnt know post office work was so complicated. :-)

This same post office is noted for weird mail delivery. I live about an hour from Minneapolis and the Star-Tribune comes to my house with the regular rural mail delivery. Used to work 6 days per week. Now since covid, my paper arrives only on schedule sometimes. sometimes a day or two late. [the latest was a week late ] I asked the above postocrat about the delays......

Me: My Tuesday Star-Tribune got to my house on Friday. Why the delay?
She: Sometimes the papers dont get here very promptly.
Me: My paper was 3 days late. Where was my paper for those 3 days??
----------------------------------
The stuff in this thread is kinda scary because these people vote.......................

Pills
Couple weeks ago at checkout local farm&barn store. I put 2 boxes Hornady 7mm 139 interlocks on counter.

Cashier kid asks for my id. I tell him it's not loaded ammo. Uh, ok, kid rings it up, off I go.

Farm&barn has policy to card all ammo purchases to ensure it's not sold to a minor. I'm 63.

Least I don't have to show a FOID card like the fibs do.

I’ve had the exact same thing happen.

John
Local P.O. personnel know me on sight , always friendly and sometimes make light if things get ugly they know who to come to as I have shipped and received ammo components and guns quite a bit .
A month or so ago I was shipping a barreled action to a barrel manufacturer to have it checked out for accuracy issues .
Had it boxed and taped securely and lady , who knows me asks if there is anything in the box that could fire or explode .
I gave her a puzzled look and answered , no it’s just a barreled action that has the bolt removed .
She seemed really nervous and awkward while handling it .
Don’t know if she recently had a bad experience or had became a propaganda victim , she was really wierd about it .

Worked the gun department of a regional chain from before Chinese flu until last fall. We sold ammunition and reloading components - when we had them. It was a daily occurance for customers to grab bullets thinking it was loaded ammo. It was especially common for 9mm as loaded ammunition and bullets both had "9mm" printed on the box.

Not only did we have to deal with angry customers returning components thinking they had bought ammo, but we had to deal with customers not understanding the difference between bullets and cartridges. It wasn't newbies that were the problem, they were confused and were appreciative of an explanation. Instead, it was those who "had been hunting/shooting for years" that had no grasp of the differences. I made up and kept a dummy round in my pocket as a visual aid for these rubes. At no time did they appear appreciative.

Those on the phone were the most fun. I really liked it when we were out of stock on both ammo and components or if we had both as I could just say, "No" or "Yes" respectively when asked if we had bullets. When we had just bullets rather than ammunition it was a pain as few knew the difference and refused to be educated. I began to just tell them no after initially asking which product they were looking for. It was not uncommon for the caller to show up anyway as they believed I was lying regarding ammo. I loved them to no end...
My gawd! The stories!

Where I grew up in the Big Empty even the school teacher who taught the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades in the county school house knew the difference between a bullet and a cartridge.

How do I know? She was my Aunt.

And a heck of a hunter too...
I can’t understand why you guys are even asking USPS personnel about mailing long guns, barrels and bullets. You’re supposed to be smarter than them. KNOW WHAT’S ALLOWED ACCORDING TO USPS REGS. Then pack it up, print your label at home, drop it at the post office and leave. Don’t talk, you just confuse the issue and create a problem for yourself.

Where’s bricktop when you really need him ?!
The Brits refer to them as bullet heads.
