Has anyone actually fooled around with one and tried to make it reliable and accurate ? My buddy has one that is totslly reliable and will do 1 1/2" 3 shot groups. I live the way they feel. How would this old rifle compae to a Remington 7400 ? I have a couple of BAR's and they are great but heavy.

I have 2, a cut-down rifle and a carbine, both in 308. I have had them in 243 and 284 too. The 243s and 308s have all worked for me, but I never could get any of the 284s to function as well, as they were hyper sensitive about feeding reliably from different magazines. I have used the cut-down 308 for culling does and inferior bucks with great success.

There was a recall on the firing pin that you can look up on the web, if you have the SN of the rifle. Other than that, the only trouble that I have had with a Winchester 100 was a used 243 that had a burr on the edge of the chamber that would break the extractor when the action cycled. The burr was probably caused by some previous owner prying a stuck case out of the chamber with a screwdriver blade, but it was an easy fix and the rifle functioned fine when it was fixed.

There are a lot of people who don't like the Winchester 100, but most of them have never owned 1, they are basing their opinion of the bad experience of others. Since they have a poor reputation, Winchester 100s in good condition can often be bought for $250 +/-. I paid $150 for the 308 carbine and it came with a couple extra magazines, plus a Weaver V4.5 in Weaver mounts.

I`ve got a win 100 in .308. It`s not the best "grouper" but it will keep-um with-in 3" at 100 so that works for me.
I`ll say this for it, that win 100 is one heavy puppy to cart around all day!
My perferred weapon of choice is the lite, sweet, accurate......Savage 99
in .250. Life is good.

I have a 100 in a .284. I haven't shot it in a few years. She will shoot just over 1" @ 100 yds. I like it myself. It's a fun rifle to shoot and I like having something that not so common. I never had any problem with it jamming either. She does a good job at taking down animals too.

Sorry I can't compare it to the Rem. or BAR for you as I have neither.

Best to Ya.. BP...

I have had problems with the extractor in several rifles. They slip over the rim of the case. I have tried an after market undercut version and they work a little better. I traded mine for a Model 88 in 284. LOVE IT, but it is heavy.

Love mine too. It was my grandfathers rifle so I may be biased but it is the best semi auto deer rifle I've used. It's balance to me is perfect. Mine is in .308 and is all you need for any deer that ever walked the face of the earth.
