What would it be? Model, caliber, etc...
AR15, 223 Rem.
Posted By: GregW Re: Your Ultimate Coyote Rifle - 01/17/07
22 inch, heavy barrel in a Howa Varmint configuration in bolt action in either .204 or .22-250 dipped in full camo....

Top it off with a Leupy 4-12....

Add a sling, Harris sitting bipod that goes about 30" and that's good for me....
1964 Model 70 Sporter weight in 225Win. 63gr Sierras. 2.5X8 Leo.
CZ 527 chambered in Rem .17 fireball, dipped in camo & pushing 25 gr Bergers would work for me.
My m70/60/06, 25" Schnieder 4 weight, 10 twist.

Africa Walnut stock and a 6-20 Leo with premier reticle dotz to 700.

I built this rifle a few moons ago with yotes being the main reason.

Its seen some use for this kind of stuff.

Don't often get shots past 300 yards here at home, my favorite specific is a 7 twist Wilson barrel 26 inch tube, floated on an AR15. Happens to shoot some match 75 bthps that I have a few thousand of really well with RL15.....

Jeff
I don't like the typical factory varminter weight , nor do I like most of the whippy barreled sporters..........the nicest I've handled is the Kimber Pro-varmint , or whatever they call it , with the medium fluted barrel . My CZ .17 Rem comes very close to the weight and bulk I'd like , but the caliber is a little light if you stretch out the range.......I've a M-70 Coyote in 223 WSSM that's just a little heavy ..... I reckon a a lighter stock would make it feel pretty good .

As for caliber , I figure for "normal" ranges under a quarter mile and if you want minimal fur damage the 204 is gonna prove to be about as good as it gets..........if you want to shoot at any feasible range , I'd like to try a 22/6mm pushing the 75 gre A-Max........the 222WSSM comes close in factory form , but they gave it a twist not quite fast enough to handle the best long range bullets.

I'd like to take a close look at one of the new Vanguard varminters ......looks to be a nice size and weight .
Stainless Remington Model 7 in 22-250......

up close ro cal my ar15 with 16" barrel and an eotech, farther then that i run a Kimber 84m 22-250 that is dead accurate with the 50 v max and r15, if windy a 243 and 85 gr hps does me well
257STW 100gr TSX 4100FPS. That is SMOKING!!! HAPPY HUNTING
I'll take a 22 Dasher XP-100 HG 12 twist barrel shooting the 60 gr. JLK LD bullet/4-12X Burris Compact with BP reticle. This would be my general coyote rig.

For strict fur-taker it'd be a 17 PPC XP HG again/3-9X Burris Mini plex reticle, blasting the 30 Gold as fast as i could out of it.

For LR damage control, i already have both of them--

1) 243 WSSM Striker/4.5-14X Leup. VX-III/VH reticle.
105 A-Max.

2) 6.5 WSM XP HG/8.5-25X Mark IV/TMR reticle (tho i'd prefer Darrell Holland's ART reticle). 140 A-Max for way out there.

Depending on where, when and how I'm hunting:

Les Baer Custom Super Varmint 20 in w/8" twist and 4.5-14 Leupy

Colt HBAR 7" twist w/ original A-2 upper

My old (Early '70's) Ruger 77-V .220 Swift w/16 Leupy
my set up for coyote or wolf is a R700 varmint synthetic in .22-250 with loopy 8.5-25x40mm , 27" harris bipod, sending winchester ballistic tip 50 gr..

Kimber Montana 243, 4.5-14x40 Leupold B&C, 85gn TSX's @ 3200fps to make the B&C work.
Ultimate Shadow 243 WSSM. Leupold VX-II 3-9x40. Makes for a light setup. 55gr BST and 85gr TSX. Looking forward to seeing how it's going to perform on deer this fall with the 85gr pill.
Is there much for yotes up in your country?

Thx

Yes, a good amount. A whole 'nother animal though compared to the lower 48. Very call educated. I had two foxpro's working this morning, but am thinking the wind and snow kept them in cover.

BS,

Nice 'yotes you have up there. I agree, a whole different critter. Bang one for me too while you are out there!

6-06 will probably be best. But for carryin' I like my Rem M7 in 204 Ruger...........
If things work out, I am building it as we speak.

Ruger All weather MKII .223
Will be floated and AL pillared/bedded
Mounted with a 4-12x40 Nikon Monarch scope (when I get the darn thing back from Nikon)

I do alot of mountain hiking to get into yote territory, so no rifle mounted bipod for me, they're too heavy. I stick with the pivoting rest adjustable bipod.

I know a lot of guys use centerfire 22's, anywhere from 22 Hornet up through 220 Swift, for Coyotes.
But, I had a custom 257 Roberts built specifically for Coyote hunting. I like a little more lead on target than the 22's deliver.

YMMV

Don
DMB-that is why I went 6/06, for my country and my situations the 22's just didn't cut the biscuit for me. The only 22 I would personally consider would be a quick twist '250 AI and that would be allright for the come what may be yotes I get after.

I think i may have just purchased the "ultimate" coyote rig. I'll find out shortly. It's a D-Tech upper for an AR in 243 WSSM. His AR's have gained a bunch of respect from the coyote hunters over at predatormasters.com for reliability and performance. IMO the practiced coyote hunter will kill more coyotes with a semi-automatic shooting system. This rig should get me to short and long-range as efficiently as anything else out there as a spot and stalk or calling hunter. It was bought as a "damge control" late season coyote killer.
ss-believe it and or not I went thru a phase of running a BAR in 243 with a 3-10 Leo on it for yotes in particular for late season when they came in packs.

I just couldn't like the feel and handling of the rifle, but it was effective.

The only tripple I've ever gotten was with my 6/06 turn bolt however.

I do however remember one day using a heavy tubed AR on a bipod for pd's. The buds could not keep in the killin game with me with their turn bolts...grins

I take it none of you guys are saving pelts? If so, I dunno why you would use a 243. It's a great rifle, but really tears those yotes up. If your argument is you are looking for more lead, then why not load up some 75g .223?

The .243 is just too fast of a round once you load it up lighter and as for the heavier grain bullets, they still aren't too nice to pelts in alot of cases.
My partner and I used to take between 40-60 yotes a year and I used to be quite serious about taking pelts and worked it hard from Dec 1st to about mid Jan. Those 6 weeks were by far the best time for us to take excellent dogs.

And so during those times I would care about being friendly to the pelts. I found thru the taking of many yotes that for being fur friendly a 243 and or my 6/06 with a 55 NBT at max in either rifle it would be very user friendly.

I had to stay away from big bones just like I had to with less intense rounds but other than that no issues.

I've enough experience with said issue to not have to guess.

Coyotes are in mind with my latest project. I have a action at Krieger waiting for them to screw a SS, 1 in 8, 22" #2 chambered 22-250AI. Have an Edge Classic ordered from Rick and HS DBM on order as well. Can't wait to get it all home and put together. I'm thinking early May I should have everything with the Mcmillan coming last.
Sounds awesome, what length on the tube and what for glass?

Thx

22 inches on the tube, Talley LW's and Leupold Vari-XIII 3.5-10x 40 that I have on hand for starters.
I just scored a deal on a 243ai shilen barreled rem 600 w/ a fiberglass stock of unknown hidieous make that is going to be my lite "walking varmiter". I will post pics when its here. I am thinking 58 vmax on the calm days and 87 vmax on the other 362 days of the year.
Sounds like a nice rig, you could always just simplify life and use on bullet either the 70 NBT and or the 75 VM.

Just a thought.

Interesting Mark. My partners and i were also killing 40-60 +/- for about 10 years or so until i discovered #'s weren't important to me anymore really, and got into spot and stalk, and howling for locating mostly. Interesting you got a triple with the 6/06. My 6mm AI got 3 once that i remember from the same stand. It was HELL haluing those dogs back to the truck. Just shot one 3 hours ago out east just before the snow hit with the same old 6AI. 87 gr. Horn BTHP took him low in the chest at 275 +/-. I have 2, 4-12X Burris Comp.'s and love both of them. I'll be putting one of them on the new WSSM upper when it comes in. They both have the BP reticle/tgt. elevation turret, and have given me good service for about 10 years or so now (once i sent them back 2X for warranty work).
Yep hauling 3 yotes or a couple of limits of honkers very far can shorten a mans legs pretty darn quickly.

My Grandson is 7 and is taking more than a fair amount of interest in the hunt. I can't wait till he can pack for me in a serious manner.

Now I know why my Dad/Uncles/Granddads etc all wanted to take me...grins

seen one today from the road had my tikka t3 varmint in 223 cant imagine why he took off running but i was wishing I had my ar-15 when I missed !!
i love my kimber 22-250 leupold 4.5-14x40 varmint reticle scope... has worked on a jack rabbit at 415 and a coyotoe runnin at 40
which Kimber do you have?

Mark D
I use my Tikka T3 in .243 using 58gr V-Max ammo topped with a Konus Pro 6-24x44 scope.I really like the lightweight and accuracy of this set-up

Here is my rig I mentioned earlier in this thread.... [Linked Image]
i have the 84m varminter. stainless fluted barrel, BEAUTIFUL wood stock.

Would it be a bad idea to use a .270 or 30-30?

Or a .17 HMR?

The top one... no the middle one... no the top one...I can't decide.
i love that kimber, it shoots very well also!
If you want em dead and pelts are not a concern I recommend a 223. Mine is a Ruger M77 MKII stainless varmint. The load I shoot is Viht N120 24gr, Rem 7 1/2, and a 40gr V Max(depending on the gun I've had velocities of 3900-4200fps). If you want to save pelts the 204 Ruger may be a little better. My load for that is 28.8gr of Viht N540, Rem 7 1/2, and a 32gr V Max. Better BCs with the 204 but much cheaper reloading or buying the 223 ammo.

For my calling gun I built a Rem 600 Pac-Nor #1 ss in 6x45mm. Synthetic stock a Leupold 1x4 VX-II. Very accurate 55NBT H-335. It is a little messy on fringe hits but they don't run.

erich
Tac drivn' 22-250 in a mid weight rifle. 55gr. V-max makes a nice soup of a yote's inards.
My vote goes to my favorite rifle period....16" AR-15 cool
The best part is you're covered for 2-legged AND 4-legged varmints... whistle

if i was setting up a rifle, just for coyotes, i reckon i'd find one of the stainless/walnut m70 classic featherweights in 22-250...

if i couldn't locate one (i can), i'd get a savage 99 in .250 savage... ... john w

Get the one you can hit the things with. I'm thinking that that new Les Baur 6.5 Grendall AR 15 would be nice to try.....and it would give me an excuse to buy one!

Really though, I have an AR 15 in 223 that works pretty good for them (and lets face it, it's fun to shoot them with). I bought a CZ bolt action in 17 HMR with a 6 to 12 x scope just for coyotes, and it works pretty good too, especially if they are inside 200 yards. I bought a Remington 700 in 25-06 a few years ago for longer range varmits. It does it (well) though it is a little loud.

For the targets of opportunity you just can't beat my 444s. While it is loud and kicks a mite (why have a 444 that doesn't?), the coyotes under 150 yards just fall over dead when they see it. Just the sight of it in the field scares them to death.
I use my PD rifle for driving around coyoting . Rem 722 in 22 250 AI with Pac nor 22 inch and FX 12 Loopie .50 gr Bitzkings .

For open country calling , a 700 SA BDL with Shilen in 6 MM AI . 4.5 X 14 Loopie . 70 gr NBT at around 3800 .

Nightime and brush calling I use my A Bolt Hornet as it came from the factory except for trigger work . 3X9 Vari X 2 . It likes Speer 40 gr. .223 and Lilgun .

I kind of like to shoot coyotes with the .416 Rigby and 400 grain partitions, myself.

I don't save coyote hides.
Mine is a custom-
Rem 700 stainless action, that is trued.
26" Lilja stailless barrel, number 4 contour
McMillan Rem hunter stock
chambered in 240 weatherby
scoped with a Leupold 4-12X

I shoot 70 grain ballistic tips at about 3700 fps
