Foe sale Winchester 37 20 gauge $350 plus shipping
Nice gun. My father had one just like it and was my first gun.
You might want to mention that this is a “red letter” version. Should help with the sale.
I've had this in my safe for a very long time. At first I was going to give it to one of my kids, it turns out they like 12 gauges. Then I thought my wife could shoot it. Now, I'm getting a semi-auto 20 gauge for her.
Red letter huh. Thanks

What made that one do special?
Dad had one that I graduated to from my H&R Topper .410. I liked it. Shot a pheasant across the road, in town with it one time. On ours the hammer was rather slick to get a grip on if you had cocked it on the way up only to find that the bird was a hen and had to lower it back down. We always made very sure that the barrel was pointed down at the ground if we needed to do so. (Good advice no matter what.) It did slip away from me one time doing this. Probably was a good experience as I became a real old lady about gun safety.

Was my first shotgun as a youth thanks to my dad!
If you don't know what is so nice about the 37's ........you haven't thrown one up to you shoulder.
Is the stock finish original?
Is the stock finish original?
I don't know but that finish looks to me to be linseed oil. The stock doesn't look sanded though.
My first shotgun was a 20 gauge break open also. I gave it to my younger sister who's killed many of varmints around their farm with it.
Definite refinish but looks nicely d9ne

....
edit: Misread... Thought this was the 28ga as in the link
Buyer backed out. So it's for sale again.
What is the barrel length? Is the choke labeled on the barrel? 3" chamber? Thanks
He just messaged me. 13.5 lop. Labeled choke.
It's a 2 3/4" chamber
28" barrel length
The barrel is only marked "Choke" - not Full or Modified or Skeet, just "Choke"
There's no serial number, so date of manufacture is unknown to me.
From Wikipedia
The Winchester Model 370 (M37) Single Shot Shotgun is an American firearm. It was in production from 1936-1963 with 1,015,554 units made. This model was developed by Winchester with a standard visible hammer action for many years. The Winchester Model 370 uses a top-cocking lever, breakdown type of action with an automatic shell ejector. The first M37 shotguns were delivered on February 10, 1936 according to factory records. Notably M370 shotguns were not serial numbered.
Production changes included the folded sheet metal "pigtail" omission in the second year of production to a solid steel construction. The 410 gauge production started in the second year (1937). Early Winchester models referred to as "Red Letter" shotguns were stamped with the Winchester name and filled with red custom enamel paint until 1948. Unfortunately, M37's were manufactured without date stamps or serial numbers. There are no factory records for the yearly number of shotguns produced from 1936-1963 the entire production run.
This shotgun is indeed a Red Letter model as Winchester is marked on the bottom, so it was made before 1948 and it is most likely a "Full Choke" model.
as far as I know they were all full choke. My 410 and 12 ga both are and marked "choke"
https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt.../10976377/Winchester_Model_37_-_16_GaugeDeep in one of my Winchester books I just found this reference to the choke options on Model 37's:
"In sales from 1936 to 1943 (of Model 37's!), 87% of all guns had FULL chokes, 11% had MODIFIED chokes and 2% were CYLINDER BORE or IMPROVED CYLINDER chokes".
From "The Winchester Handbook - pages 254 and 255.
Had one in 12 ga like the man said they feel good to shoulder . Won a lot for money at local shoots but just like many others in the last 45 years she's gone
More Model 37s were manufactured by Winchester than any other shotgun model. They are solid value.
I still have my Model 37 .410 with 28" bbl. bought for $23.50 at a hardware store in Santa Rosa CA in 1951 when I was nine. No ID, no adult, no hassle, just cash money and 1% sales tax. Normal for those days--every rural family had a .410.
Shells cost six bits plus tax for a box of 3" red paper Winchester #7 1/2s.
If someone wants this, please PM me. It's not always easy to follow these threads. I won't be looking at this thread unless I get a PM. Thanks.
What does a red lable look like???
37 Red Letters Are Marked On The Bottom..
